Older generations show resistance to trans rights

"Millennials and Gen Z tend to be overwhelmingly supportive of trans people, having grown up in a more inclusive environment, while older generations show far more resistance to trans rights, likely intimidated by the speed of social change."

Is this your experience?
There appears to be an overwhelming support for gender critical beliefs on Mumsnet.
Is it because it's mainly older generations engaging in this debate?

How old are you and what are your views?

I am 45yo and I mostly support trans rights (with the exception of trans athletes competing in woman's events and I agree puberty blockers is a grey area)

😂 Okay love, I seem to have upset you.
News flash, not every woman hates trans people.

We don't hate trans people. Such a tedious argument.

What makes you think I do?!

You've put two and two together and come up with five.

I don't hate anyone. I can just see a whole pile of intrinsic problems including legal conflicts you won't even acknowledge. This doesn't stop these issues existing even if you are tone deaf to them.

I personally would like to see a resolution but we aren't going to get that whilst we have people failing to understand that sex isn't a concept it's a reality because they so swept up in their own ideological bullshit.

NO ONE can change sex. That is the bottom line. Trust me, it would be easier for me if it were possible.

The teenage histrionics don’t help the mildest pushbacks leading to screeching accusations of hate many parents of teens will find this wearily familiar ( to be fair mine not like this but some friends teens are)

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 08/04/2024 20:26

I personally think if I’m in a changing room and someone has a vagina and breast I wouldn’t question if they were trans.

I can see that as you are sympathetic to the trans view because of your situation, you might be inclined to hope that, faced with a naked post-op transwoman in a women's changing room, you would not be able to tell they were a transwoman, but I think that's actually pretty unlikely.

Mind you, give stats another few years and lo and behold it'll be a case that, "women are as prone to pawdophilia/fetish/vouyerism/insert kink, as men, study finds"

(Cos "women" now includes a shit load of pervy men - see also "shocking rise in women's murder and rape rates")

Nextdoor55 · 08/04/2024 20:32

I'm 56 & I'm a total supporter of trans rights.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 08/04/2024 20:34

I'm 56 & I'm a total supporter of trans rights.

As in... trans people having the same rights everyone else does? Because they already have those.

That’s not what trans rights means.

Abeona · 08/04/2024 20:39

So what extra rights do transpeople want?

Nextdoor55 · 08/04/2024 20:41

TomeTome · 08/04/2024 20:34

What are the trans rights you support?

Why are you asking? What's it got to do with you? I'm totally supportive because I'm not threatened by trans women or trans men.
And I've earnt my beliefs.
Now, take your prejudice elsewhere

TheYoungestSibling · 08/04/2024 20:42

I'm early 50s, politically left of centre, pro-Europe and largely live and let live. By which I mean, wear what you like, pick a name that you think suits you. Enjoy jobs and hobbies that engage your mind and your preferences with no care for societal restrictions based on sterotypes. Date people who are enthusiastic about you as long as it is legal in terms of age, familial relationship etc.

All of which convinces me that gender is a social construct that tries to put people in boxes and I would happily smash the boxes. They are subjective and liable to change over time.

Biological sex is not. It is immutable from conception to beyond death (as an archaeological dig demonstrates). It is objectively easily observable in the overwhelming majority of cases and identifiable in cases of DSD even if more complicated.

For reasons of immutability and objectivity, biological sex is the appropriate way to define "man/boy" and "woman/girl" in terms of law and public policy: for hospital wards, gym changing rooms, prisons, toilets, sports, etc etc.

So I guess that makes me GC. By the way, JK Rowling is awesome!

How can we know if we support them if no one tells us what are?

But not everyone believes that trans people should have the same rights. And I do.

I suggest that you read a book or get educated.. or maybe even ask a trans person or people, you know, open your mind. Might help

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 08/04/2024 20:47

I suggest that you read a book or get educated.

Why does anyone need to read a book? You stated you support 'trans rights'. You were merely asked what rights are those and you clap back with allegations of prejudice and other nonsense. It's a discussion forum. And you don't appear to be able to articulate what rights you support. That should be the first thing you should be able to do.

Because you said you were a total supporter of trans rights and I thought if you supported them you might know what they are? What prejudice have I displayed by asking you to voice your support?

But not everyone believes that trans people should have the same rights. And I do.

Evidence?? There may be a very very very tiny minority of ppl who thinks trans ppl shouldn’t have employment rights or not have access to housing but pretty much everyone else thinks trans ppl should have exactly the same legal rights as everyone else - and what do you know? They do!!

what they can’t have is the rights of the opposite sex because that would be giving them more rights than other ppl
