Older generations show resistance to trans rights

1000 replies

Inauthentic · 07/04/2024 22:36

"Millennials and Gen Z tend to be overwhelmingly supportive of trans people, having grown up in a more inclusive environment, while older generations show far more resistance to trans rights, likely intimidated by the speed of social change."

Is this your experience?
There appears to be an overwhelming support for gender critical beliefs on Mumsnet.
Is it because it's mainly older generations engaging in this debate?

How old are you and what are your views?

I am 45yo and I mostly support trans rights (with the exception of trans athletes competing in woman's events and I agree puberty blockers is a grey area)

Ageism is the last acceptable bigotry, amIrite

tue Whole post was about older people tolerating less . They do . Saying it is not ageism . I’m not taking anyone’s rights or refusing anyone enything or even judging . Simply stating examples

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 08/04/2024 17:48

Nope just I don’t believe the majority of men are going to rape women.

Well no. They aren't. Why would it need to be a majority for you to want to minimise the risk though? I can't remember the statistics of how many women have experienced rape or sexual assault, but it's a LOT. Is it the same few men doing it all? Are you aware that a higher proportion of transwomen prisoners than of male prisoners in general are in for sexual offences.

Snowypeaks · 08/04/2024 17:48

In fairness to GoonieGang, she is saying that although she herself would not mind sharing with a man claiming to be a woman, she doesn't expect other women to - single sex + gender neutral is what she espouses like most of us.
And as for GG's DSC, we can just wish them well and leave it at that - like many women who claim to be men, the DC sounds sensitive and empathetic about others' feelings and what spaces/facilities they use. GG and the adult child have found peace. It doesn't have to be logical, because no policies are being set. It's just their personal relationship.

@ForCoralFox

I find it interesting that for a group that is supposedly so against labels, you have so many of them and no only get upset when mislabelled but are so very happy to not only label but mislabel others.

SparklyBracelet · 08/04/2024 17:52

I don’t think many of us “older” generation took a blind bit of notice until it started to be rammed down our throats everywhere and we were expected to “celebrate” this fad 🤷‍♀️

I can see that you have a personal line drawn here. However, there really is a need for female people to have spaces away from male people even if they no longer have a penis.

For instance, removal of a penis does not change that male person's ability to cause serious injury to a female person. They still have a significantly higher grip strength, one that is likely to be higher than 90% of all female people's grip strength. And punch power is the same. And height remains undiminished.

There is also no evidence as yet that a male person at any stage of transition has a lower rate of committing a sex crime as any other male person in the UK. Indeed, a male called Sarah Baker called for all women who disagreed with Baker to be 'punched in the face'. So, while I understand this is your personal line, I say this so that perhaps you understand why others will not agree with you.

Also, female people use toilets for more than just 'peeing'. When my child was a baby, I regularly had to have the door jammed open by the pushchair while I dealt with flooding periods. I would have been horrified to have seen a male walk past. It was bad enough knowing the female people could see me, but at least I knew that some of them very likely had been in a similar situation.

Also I have had to clean my shirt and other clothes for numerous reasons, including breast milk explosions, or just a drink.

And of course female people are highly likely to reliably sex a male person. Even one with their cock and balls removed. Just by seeing them move and hearing their voice. Plus looking at their facial proportions as well as their skeletal proportions.

So, as others have pointed out, why does any female need to accept a male in their space? Where do you draw the line? Prisons? Shelters?

Again, I understand that you have stated your line in the sand, so this is just some reasons why I don't agree and I think others are not too dissimilar.

Absolutely. And herein lies the debate. And others, like yourself are correct, where do you draw the line?
I don’t agree that either sex should be forcing the opposite gender to accept them into single sex spaces. Acceptance is my ideology but I am obviously biased here.

Since I've been designated today's "most hateful, terf that ever terfed on terf island" I'd like to say that trans women should NOT be allowed to pee! Not ANYWHERE.If they want to be real women they should know the urinary leash. It's what "living as a woman" mean!

And I'm not answering questions, so don't bother because "no debate" works both ways.

Do you get a badge? Or a special hat? Are we taking it in turns or are you in post until you step down? Were you elected or did you volunteer?

Sorry that's enough questions to someone who isn't going to engage.

As I said, I wouldn’t have an issue with it. I’d rather be on a hospital ward with a 6.4 fully transitioned female than one who still had a penis.
My best friend doesn’t agree with me either due to her own personal experience. I totally understand her pov. I also worry about Muslim women too they must be very wary in female only spaces.
I do think the only solution is men only women only and gender neutral spaces.

I think that solution is a good one.

you may call it mysogynistic, but hell, aint that the truth

Even your post thats supposed to disagree with the premise is full of statements that are based upon womens fuckability and keeping themselves looking young.

What you dont seem to realise that many women, who are NOT playing the pick me game, even well over their sell by date, actually DGAF about men, or about being youthful, or attractive, and THEN we see the mysogyny loom high.

And when that happens we really see how many of the supposed good guys are only interested when we are playing the game. When we actually dont need them, or care what they think about our pleasingness to them, oh my.........

Thanks for following up my post with an explanation that I am too tired to formulate.
I thank the menopause for my zero fucks left to give attitude.

Of course you're judging.

'we forgive the older generation to much'

If you think they need to be forgiven, you are implying they are doing something wrong. You then go on to give two stories about older people apparently motivated by racism. The implication being that older people are more racist and 'get away with murder'.

You've now slightly shifted that to say they are 'intolerant'. This is also a judgement, and a sweeping generalisation, and also in my experience, bullshit. Your ageism and arrogance is frankly horrible.

"I don't see how someone can think that trans women for example should be afforded the right to use women's bathroom and changing facilities, but not to compete against women in sports? I mean they are either women or they are not."

I believe they have a genuine need and right (based on internal sense of self) to identify as a woman, to be called a woman, to wear female clothes without being ridiculed, to use women's bathroom

Competing against women in sports is a different matter due to potential physical advantages.

I'm still interested to hear what you think 'trans rights' means OP.

The 'right' to 'identify' (whatever you mean by that) as the opposite sex is not a human right as set out by the UN.

https://www.un.org/en/about-us/universal-declaration-of-human-rights

What do you mean by a 'right'?

What 'rights' don't trans people have?

Universal Declaration of Human Rights | United Nations

A milestone document in the history of human rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights set out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected. It has been translated into over 500 languages.

I may have a slightly more sympathetic view due to my step son but I can appreciate what you are saying.
I personally think if I’m in a changing room and someone has a vagina and breast I wouldn’t question if they were trans.

I really do worry about the level of knowledge about biology for many many trans activists!

DetOliviaBenson · 08/04/2024 17:33

How does one "live as a woman in society"?

I feel you want to goad me.
I have not thought about it is my honest answer.
In my SS case him living as a man hasn’t honestly changed much from his family perspective. He has always been ‘one of the lads’ he’s has never had close female friends. He has never worn a dress (apart from at my birthday which I feel a bit bad about) he even wore a suit not a bridesmaid dress.
Up until he developed facial hair, people who didn’t know him would refer to him as her. It’s very difficult/disheartening for people to refer to their biological gender but obviously very natural and normal.

ArabellaScott · 08/04/2024 18:10

TeaAndCock · 08/04/2024 15:41

I’m 40 and generally supportive of the trans community, I think it’s been blown out of proportion on here, social media etc. There are issues which need resolved in law - sports, prisons and domestic abuse type safe spaces. I don’t care about toilets, I don’t believe there are any wishful rapists sitting at home just waiting to be allowed into a women’s bathroom to commit their crime. Denying that these people even exist (born man = always man etc) won’t age well imo. Being trans is not a new thing by any stretch, but would have just been seen as weirdos/eccentric etc in the past just like gay people have been treated before them.

Stand by for this being the predictable response, after a few very brave women have spent the past few years reversing all the 'issues' that need resolved.

Many have lost jobs, friends, and have suffered hugely because they have refused to allow the gender juggernaut to destroy more pre-pubertal children's lives, and have spent huge amounts of time, energy, money, and effort in ensuring that rapists are not now put into women's prisons as a matter of course if they ask to be, or trying to preserve the integrity of data and statistics, or protect women's rights, or accuracy in healthcare, or the ability to speak freely on the subject, or held the media to account.

But those who didn't get involved will now, looking back at it all go 'coo, what a fuss, see, everything's fine' and shrug.

Time travel back to 2015 or so and tell us it's being 'blown out of proportion'. Or go forward in time about, what, three years? And tell the detransitioners they've got their knickers in a twist over being unnecessarily sterilised.

It's still not fine, although things have started to look a bit more rational. Any resolution of these 'issues' has been won on the backs of a lot of women (and yes, sorry, some men) who will probably never be acknowledged.

Crankywiddershins · 08/04/2024 18:11

@emilysquest in regards to (I do imagine that many, although not all, male boxers would object to finding they are expected to smash a woman in the face to advance in their sport, but I don't suppose that has ever happened?)
I suggest that you Google Fallon Fox, Alana McLaughlin, and Patricio Manuel.

Firstly, please do not call me a trans activist because of my personal experience and views.

Yes, NettleTea. However, I suspect that the poster you are answering simply cannot see the inherent misogyny in their post.

Woman.... a fuckable hole or a fuckworthy hole. Or what did Long Chu say 'a kind of centrifuge for distilling the femaleness to its barest essentials- an open mouth, an expectant asshole, blank, blank eyes'. Only a male person who has declared that they are a woman and any expert on 'femaleness' would write such a statement.

But hey... apparently women who prioritise sex over gender are the misogynist ones!

As an aged hag, who no longer works within the mental health field, but did for nearly forty years, I categorically believe that no human ever changed sex. I have changed people with anorexia, who believed that they were fat, when they were objectively underweight. I have detained people who believed that they were someone who they were not, such as those who believed that they were jesus, or the Virginia Mary. I found it very difficult when I was asked to detain a man who had delusional beliefs, who was then placed on a female ward, as his belief that he was a woman was deemed to not be delusional.
I do not believe that anyone born male can "live as a woman", as no one has every been able to tell me what that is.
As a young woman I campaigned for women's rights, I didn't expect that we would be still campaigning for basic rights now.

Mumsnet has, over time, become a more and more transphobic space due to a refusal to moderate the anti trans views expressed here (don’t bother coming at me, I won’t engage) which has driven out other users who don’t share those views. I started a poll once and the overwhelming number of people (and there were a LOT of responses, because absolutely nothing gets people more fired up here than trans issues) said they did not believe that trans women are women. It’s almost all the same here. Either downright hateful views expressed in truly despicable language, or the more common refrain of “I don’t care if they wear a dress, as long as they and I don’t have to consider them women”. You’ll also get a LOT of shouting about chromosomes. It’s painful. My only comfort is that each generation is always more inclusive and progressive than the last, so ‘gender critical’ views will become increasingly fringe. Can’t wait for its final death rattle, honestly.

#Trans women are women.

It's not transphobia to not agree that trans women are women.

You are free to believe that trans women are women. But nobody is obliged to agree with you.

If you want more people to agree with you then you need to engage with people who currently disagree and advance a compelling argument to support your point of view.

Just calling people transphobic for not sharing your beliefs without elaborating further isn't going to cut it.
