Grin

This is great news and shows Labour is going in the right direction imo. Bye bye L'OJ

I'm very surprised this was deemed newsworthy however 😂

Owen Jones

Owen Jones urges Labour voters to back other parties

Activist is cancelling his Labour membership and backing candidates with "transformative policies".

@Itscatsallthewaydown what would you call it then?

@Itscatsallthewaydown what would you call it then?

I’d say that Israel is defending itself against terrorism. All Hamas have to do is to release their hostages and surrender, then it’ll be all over.

showmethegin · 21/03/2024 19:06

Israel are intentionally starving to death over 1.5 million people. They are stopping water purification systems at the border.

You have to be pretty naive to think this is all about Hamas.

Israel shot two children to death in the West Bank last week, that Hamas too was it?

I refer you to the answer above.

showmethegin · 21/03/2024 19:07

Sorry, you think it's fair to starve 1.5 million people to death?

windowframer · 21/03/2024 19:09

gubbinsy · 21/03/2024 16:05

Way to help the Tories! Seriously - with no PR, encouraging people to not vote labour when not enough will vote for the other parties allows the Tories back in. I get having principles and he should do what he thinks is right but if loads of left wing voters do this then they will be responsible for more Tory rule.

No we won't. It's the people who vote Tory who will be responsible for more Tory rule.

AdamRyan · 21/03/2024 19:09

Maybe go and discuss this on the ME board? Otherwise we could get quite derailed

You keep posting, I’ll keep telling you refer to the above answer.

It's ok, I'll move on. It's impossible to reason with someone that thinks starving 1.5 million people to death for a crime they didn't commit is fair

lady69 · 21/03/2024 19:14

Back on topic (please), but Owen Jones is a nasty piece of work so the Labour Party are well rid of him.

windowframer · 21/03/2024 19:36

I'd urge people to read OJ's own article about it (which doesn't even mention trans issues - upon which subject, like others here, I vehemently disagree with him) and see whether there is anything they would actually argue with:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/mar/21/labour-party-cancelling-membership-policies

Among all the simple certainty of "DON'T LET THE TORIES IN!" few people seem to have considered the ramifications of living in a country run by two alternating neoliberal parties, in hock to a combination of corporate power and bigoted right wing ideology, with no meaningful opposition and a dysfunctional electoral system that makes it impossible to dislodge them.

The Labour party is in my blood. Here’s why I’ve just cancelled my membership | Owen Jones

My ancestors could always point to Labour policies that transformed ordinary lives. I cannot say the same, says Guardian columnist Owen Jones

DramaLlamaBangBang · 21/03/2024 19:40

The Labour Party is full of these sanctimonious twats who would rather have a Tory government than a Labour one that actually has to do stuff like pay the bills. One less won't be missed. Especially when it's the hypocrite Owen Jones.
Re Gaza- it wouldn't have saved a single life if Labour had called for a ceasefire. The bloody UN have done it and been ignored. All it would have done is appease people on marches. Starmer expects to be Prime Minister. He has to go with internationsl consensus as these are proper his government would have to deal with at a later stage.

AdamRyan · 21/03/2024 19:44

"bigoted right wing ideology
Really?
I don't think Starmers Labour are right wing. They are centrist, nu- Labour. Not sure it's a good idea to call people bigoted.

I understand why the further left voters don't like it, but I don't see their defection elsewhere as a big problem for Labour. Its not like Corbyn did very well at winning votes.

LMAO

BackToLurk · 21/03/2024 20:04

He makes a big deal about his parents' Labour credentials, usually forgets to mention their massive support of Militant Tendency. That's his 'Labour tradition' and frankly he can fuck off with it.

Thanks Windy. I was close.

AdamRyan · 21/03/2024 16:09

Yeah me too. But I think it might reassure a lot of voters that the last vestiges of Corbyn have gone. 🤞.

Except for their policy commitments on trans rights which they want to 'modernise'.

RebelliousCow · 21/03/2024 20:26

showmethegin · 21/03/2024 18:43

I can't bear OJ, think he's an odious misogynist but I did watch the video about why he left and I agree with pretty much every word. (Even a stopped clock is the right time twice a day).

I am horrified at the direction of Labour at the moment as are many people I know, for many reasons that don't even include the sex and gender issues. Their policy on Gaza for one is abhorrent.

I won't be voting for anyone this year; I have never ever done that before. I may vote for an independent if one goes up that I like the look of.

Their policy is to support Israel whilst also supporting humanitarian aid to those effected by the consequences of the Hamas atrocities and the subsequent war/military operation in Gaza.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 21/03/2024 20:27

A donkey would win over the Tories, so Starmer should be ok.

Codlingmoths · 21/03/2024 20:44

I think we have the most naive viewpoint of the year here.

Moonwatcher1234 · 21/03/2024 21:00

Owen jones has consistently been the only member of the media brave enough to keep calling out Labour on Gaza and to keep drawing attention to the ugly, unutterable things happening in Gaza. He’s a hero for that.

Edited

Ridiculous comment - imagine if every government or political party thought on any issue, well, it won’t make a difference anyway, so let’s not take a moral stance. Doesn’t wash with any other issue, does it?

RebelliousCow · 21/03/2024 20:24

Except for their policy commitments on trans rights which they want to 'modernise'.

"Modernise" means make it a bit quicker and less bureaucratic. It doesn't mean make it easier.
Not that that's relevant to L'OJ leaving. It's probably a factor he's too savvy to raise.
