I cannot vote Tory but Labour has lost me on the treatment of women.

OP posts:
Snowypeaks · 18/03/2024 17:55

I don't think it happened quite as reported - there was fuckwittery from both parties aimed at talking out the Bill. Tories just as bad. Both playing politics.

This is quite some take, though:
A Labour spokesperson said: "Tory support for this bill is further proof that weak Rishi Sunak is still dancing to Liz Truss’s tune, while working people still pay the price for her economic recklessness."

Wow.

Abhannmor · 18/03/2024 18:15

Tories have a working majority. Why can't they get this bill through ...if they want to?

Froodwithatowel · 18/03/2024 18:18

It is a very fair point.

If the Tories actually cared about women's rights and children not being sterilised and harmed by medical experimentation, they would do something.

As opposed to a small pocket of MPs trying to do something while the rest of the Tories fart about with Labour MPs, talking about ferrets. I'm ashamed of the bloody lot of them.

coureur · 18/03/2024 18:21

It was third bill on the agenda. Third bills hardly ever get read. The first bill was a Conservative animal welfare bill which got fully debated. The second bill was a Labour Public Procurement bill which ran out time.

it will be second on the agenda on the 22nd so might have more chance.

Floisme · 18/03/2024 18:23

Neither party comes out of this well.

coureur · 18/03/2024 18:24

Oh and the debate is all available on parliamenttv should you wish to see for yourself rather than believing whatever crap the Express have made up.

Gettingmadderallthetime · 18/03/2024 18:57

The debate is here https://parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/d1e71574-3746-4a97-83d0-5b77ae2d1026 Its interesting to see the amount of time that difference MPs spoke for. Waffle is obviously a skill for our politicians (did not spot ferret naming but there was a feeling that many of them were not in any hurry). That the first bill was about animal welfare meant that everyone seemed to want to speak. I don't see how anyone could have reasonably expected Truss's bill to get read this time anyhow - as it is third in order - but having animals as first bill did not help. They spend 4 hours on this first bill, leaving only one hour and all the rest. (On 22nd perhaps she will be following a less popular bill. (Will it follow Public Procurement (British Goods and Services) Bill' again?)

@Gettingmadderallthetime yes, my understanding is that it will be second on the order paper on the 22nd so more of a chance of being heard.

The ferret naming was right at the beginning of the animal welfare bill: the Conservative proposer started off by listing the names of her pets (which is something of a Friday tradition) and a member of the opposition lightheartedly asked what she would name a ferret if she had one. The full name of the bill is the Animal Welfare (import of dogs, cats and ferrets) Bill.

The entire exchange took less than ten seconds. In the Tory press this has somehow been translated into Labour wasting hours of parliamentary time discussing the names of ferrets. I’m sure MPs who were on both sides of the chamber during the two debates would be horrified by how the extremely civilised and good natured exchanges have been portrayed.

Floisme · 18/03/2024 19:32

Do we know what the first bill on the Order Paper for the 22nd is about?
It will be fascinating to see if it inspires the same level of interest as animal welfare.

There was ferret naming and cat and dog naming too. I listened to some of it.

IwantToRetire · 18/03/2024 19:57

I dont know why everyone is saying it will come up again on 22nd.

As I said on one of the other threads, if you look at the published list of items for the day it doesn't appear - and for some reason one MP seems to have 3 different bills.

Please check https://whatson.parliament.uk/commons/2024-03-22/

Is there another listing?

OldCrone · 18/03/2024 20:20

I dont know why everyone is saying it will come up again on 22nd.

It's because that's what was said in Parliament on Friday.

At about 14:31 on here:

Hopefully the shenanigans will bring more support out on the 22nd.

Well you would think the people responsible for the HoC timetable would update their information to show it!

Would be good if the clarified it as far more people are likely to check the official timetable than happen upon some comment made in a whole session and only available on tv.

Maybe someone should contact them / Liz Truss to check.

So the official timetable for the day does not have it listed.

They don't want to.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 18/03/2024 21:46

For every MP who played a part in filibustering rhis and made a mockery of democracy, I would like to see leaflets dropped through the letterbox of every door in their constituency, explaining what they did and what this means for women and girls. Their constituents should know just how bothered they are about safeguarding the rights of women and children before they decide how to cast those vote.

A few big billboards with their picture and what they did would be useful too.

What about the other 600+ MPs who did not turn up at all?

ATerrorofLeftovers · 18/03/2024 21:51

We could do something about them too, sure. It’s shit and likely craven, yet not as egregious as what this bunch of epic arseholes lowered themselves to do though.

If they’re happy with their own conduct, they won’t mind sunlight on it at all, will they?

Should we suggest to the OP they change the thread title to 12 Tory MPs and 9 Labour MPs...

In the interests of factual accuracy...

coureur · 18/03/2024 21:54

@ATerrorofLeftovers can you explain how it was filibustered? Given it was never actually read? How did it fare differently to any other private member’s bill that has appeared third on the order paper?

It will be fascinating to see if it inspires the same level of interest as animal welfare.

It will be the Public Procurement Bill that got only partially debated on Friday before time ran out (assuming nothing changes). It’s actually a really good bill to encourage public agencies to prioritise buying from British manufacturers and farmers.

it was interesting that Badanoch chose to describe Labour MPs as wasting time on the Animal Welfare Bill (which let’s not forgot is a Tory bill) rather than the Procurement Bill, which was the one before Truss’s bill.
