@ATerrorofLeftovers can you explain how it was filibustered? Given it was never actually read? How did it fare differently to any other private member’s bill that has appeared third on the order paper?

The filibustering happened on the prior paper, to stop it actually getting read, of course. Simple. It’s very obvious when you see the quality of the questions being asked in great depth on a topic that didn’t need that depth of questioning. They weren’t so stupid as to do it on the paper itself, which served a purpose in itself of it not even getting airtime.

Should we suggest to the OP they change the thread title to 12 Tory MPs and 9 Labour MPs...

In the interests of factual accuracy...

I don’t care if you want to do that, I’m not a Tory voter and want sunlight on the lot of it. I don’t care which party they’re from, if they’re actively or even passively throwing women and children under the bus, they should be challenged hard. Fill your boots, as far as I’m concerned. It’s OP’s thread, so she gets to decide, though.

What are your motives for asking though? Word to the wise, if it’s just fear around Labour looking bad, because you want them to be favoured, that’s not an answer most people are looking g for. It’s not about spin, to try and make a bad situation look good.

That politician’s/activist’s mindset of knee-jerk countering of every criticism of their pet party with a ‘’what about the Tories/Labour’ is so tediously juvenile that it puts people off. Tackle the actual issues, please.

Floisme · 18/03/2024 22:18

It will be the Public Procurement Bill that got only partially debated on Friday before time ran out (assuming nothing changes). It’s actually a really good bill to encourage public agencies to prioritise buying from British manufacturers and farmers.

Thank you.

it was interesting that Badanoch chose to describe Labour MPs as wasting time on the Animal Welfare Bill (which let’s not forgot is a Tory bill) rather than the Procurement Bill, which was the one before Truss’s bill.

I'm not sure why this is directed at my post given that I've my said that neither party came out of it well.

coureur · 18/03/2024 22:20

@ATerrorofLeftovers the depth of questioning to the prior two bills didn’t seem any different to any other private member’s bills readings. You might not have though that they merited lengthy debate but clearly their sponsors are every bit as passionate about them as Truss is about her bill and this is simply how things work.

If the government actually cared then Badenoch as equalities minister could just adopt the bill and give it time for proper debate.

I don’t buy that Lloyd Russell Moyle is uber-passionate about ferrets, sorry. Call me cynical.

Badenoch isn’t in a position to do this herself, though the government could. They’ve rightly seen it’s an issue they can get one over Labour on, though. Quite rightly. Quite why Labour are too thick/misogynjst/captured by Labour to see this and do the right thing by women and children, is up for debate.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 18/03/2024 22:30

Captured by donors, that should say.

Isn’t Frank Hester the Tory donor? I didn’t think he was pushing a trans agenda, is he?

ATerrorofLeftovers · 18/03/2024 22:49

His racist comments were appalling and I’m sure he and his influence de warrants investigation, but I don’t think he’s pushing trans ideology. Did you bring him up because you have info that he does?

I've messaged MN and pointed out what you have said. I originally shared the story I'd read, but happy to change if it's not correct.

It's in Hansard here as well @IwantToRetire.

https://hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2024-03-15/debates/C9936E84-3626-4710-9759-CC6F4693EB93/BusinessWithoutDebate

I don't know why it's not on the schedule.

How confusing ... will add a little extra anticipation on friday.

BackCats · 19/03/2024 09:20

This is so sinister. The GRA was passed by similarly gaming the system- deliberately tabling the vote to be at a time with few MPs around, iirc. I can’t believe actual MPs could be so devious that they would plot the thwarting of democratic process, and waffle on like this. They are supposed to be servants of the public - not serving some esoteric agenda. What’s their end game? I wonder if the ones waffling in parliament on Friday are even privy to the master plan, or if they are just useful idiots.

I asked MN to change the thread title to reflect the points made. They have done that.

OP posts:
coureur · 19/03/2024 10:32

@BackCats what was sinister exactly? There were very few MPs present because there are always very few MPs present for private member's bills - it's perfectly normal to have only a dozen or so MPs present. If you think that the two bills that managed to be debated (one of them only partially) were anything out of the ordinary then I'm afraid that just tells me that you aren't very familiar with the PMB process -there was literally nothing out of the ordinary about this session.

Even if the bill passes second reading, it won't become law unless it receives government backing and time - which so far the government have given no sign of wanting to provide. Be angry at them, not at MPs who are prioritising their own areas of interest, and the interests of their constituents. The animal welfare and public procurement bills got a fair reading and I'm sure that Truss's bill will in time when it gets to the top of the list.
