Mention of dangerous Terf-led lesbian bar

Article here on a new trans-inclusive “lesbian” bar, with nice dig at the horrid old lesbians who may not want men in their spaces.

I guess this is an opinion / review piece but still quite surprising to see “Terf” being used in mainstream press. And I thought the Standard had undertaken to be balanced in its journalism.

How can London have only one lesbian bar?

New venue La Camionera was long overdue, says Isobel Van Dyke

“Lesbian is an umbrella term for everyone.”

No, it jolly well isn’t.

For those curious about the complete nonsense broadcast, here's a short clip:

Make sure you put your hands over your eyes, excessive eye-rolling might result.

PercyPeg · 17/05/2024 12:57

So is this thing open right now? I thought it was just a temporary pop up bar.

duc748 · 17/05/2024 12:57

They are talking gibberish. So, it's just a bar. That anyone can go to. Just like any other bar. With what they obviously thought was a novel branding exercise.

ladybirdsanchez · 17/05/2024 13:00

La Camionera is absolutely not that. It is a trans and non-binary inclusive space

Right, so it's not a lesbian bar at all - it's a queer bar - or just a bar.

'Keep up the good work!' Anita Rani fawns at the end of the endless interview. 'Come and talk to us again.'

Bleugh! Anita Rani is awful on WH. I've stopped listening. It's SUCH a shame.

ladybirdsanchez · 17/05/2024 13:02

Also, surely Isobel Van Dyke is a drag queen with a name like that?

nauticant · 17/05/2024 13:14

“If you’re an ally, consider donating”

Or just turn up, it’s just a bar 🤷‍♀️

theDudesmummy · 17/05/2024 13:22

On their page asking for donations they say they are FLINTA. As far as I know that means LGBT right? So for both lesbians and "lesbians" (the penisy kind) then?

I had to look it up. It stands for Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Trans and Agender or "anyone who is not a cis man".

So yes, anyone, provided they mouth the right words.

Just came on to see if there was a thread on the 'Woman's' Hour 'lesbian' bar piece. FUCK ME. Lesbian bars that are entirely inclusive are not fucking lesbian bars. How are these people so stupid? Why is Anita Rani so credulous??

Yep!! Infiltrating women only spaces... Again!!. Leave us alone fcol! Why not set up a trans only fcol. Fed up with it

Loubelle70 · 17/05/2024 13:39

So it's not a 'lesbian bar' its a 'inclusive' bar...though that can be argued oc.

heldinadream · 17/05/2024 13:39

I propose we start a fund to clone Emma Barnett and get her on all programmes where these types are interviewed. Honest to God, Anita Rani, what a disappointment.

Are not enough people going in and buying drinks?

If that's the case, I wonder why that might be.

Thanks for the warning. So it’s a bar for young people who don't want to be defined as anything because if you define anything a unicorn dies.

Costs money to set up a venue, so I am sensing that these young undefined people have pretty well defined bank accounts/ backers. Good luck to them, hospitality is a tough business.

Here is a photo of the founder, Alex Loveless, and their girlfriend, Clara. The sharper eyed among you may be able to see which one is Alex.

So the real story is ' straight woman opens mixed sex bar.'

It's an enigma, isn't it? I'm sure it's not because it's a rubbish bar.

So I could walk in, say the magic words “I’m a lesbian” and they’d have to let me stay. Which is right because, by their definition, I am a lesbian. Just a very butch lesbian. So butch in fact that I am indistinguishable in every possible way from a straight man.

If I was less busy, lived closer and could be bothered, I’d try it.

literarybitery · 17/05/2024 14:08

if you believe lesbians need an inclusive space of our own

I can't wait to get back to the days when we can proudly say we want exclusive spaces. I mean, the entire rest of Britain is inclusive, ALL the bars and ALL the restaurants, and ALL the cinemas, and ALL the supermarkets and ALL the softplay areas and ALL the parks, and ALL the pavements and literally nigh on everywhere is inclusive.

So what you sometimes want, is an exclusive space.

That clip could SO EASILY be from a satirical comedy show.

I wonder how many people listening to WH this morning didn't snort their tea out and mutter WTF? I guess it's as we've always said - sometimes you just need to let them speak without challenge. They make the GC case themselves.

I clicked on this thread because my first thought was 'I so want to go to a TERF bar'! I'm not a lesbian but I'd so love to be able to go to a female only bar - I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the real lesbian club will occasionally let straight women in as guests or something 😁
The 'inclusive' 'lesbian' bar -which is in fact just a bar no doubt filled with men - can bugger off, I have no interest in an evening there.

An occasional terven night in a proper lesbian bar would be fab. I'd not want to 'invade' such a space when it's something I think is so important for lesbian women (more so for young women who are dealing so much shit right now). But a once a month just female only type space/event might be acceptable. I'd be there in a flash. Male free environments for women just to 'be' and kick back & have a great time sounds like heaven.

I'd bet good money it would get endlessly harassed & targeted though. Cos women just having a nice time in a female only space seems to enrage so many (inadequate) people. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Could be. Could also be that the target demographic is not large. Or has other places to be.

Marketing is such an inexact science, isn't?

This bar has just had a massive plug on Woman's Hour. An extended puff piece where I lost count of the number of mentions of "identity", "non-binary", "cis", and all the rest. The woman co-owner even admitted that "lesbian" was a branding exercise because it was a space for people of all diverse genders.

Anita Rani thought it was marvellous.

So, it’s just a bar then.

literarybitery · 17/05/2024 16:10

noraclavicle · 17/05/2024 15:23

So, it’s just a bar then.

Yes, I have just listened to it. Its just a bog standard bar!

I love Cara the male lesbian saying, ' yeah, because people often read me as a straight cis man, I just don't want to have to answer those questions about my identity, so its open to everyone and inclusive.'

You could get that in any bar, Cara the Male Lesbian. No random is going to walk up to you and ask you, as a random bloke with your girlfriend, any questions about your identity, or anything else really.

But lets be honest. This entire project is a vanity project to validate Cara that Male Lesbian's identity as a lesbian.
