Has anyone seen this recent article on the transgender (trans woman) Scarlett Blake who was sentenced to 24 years today for murdering a man. Blake also killed a cat. Pls see this recent article from bbc news. BBC news puts nowhere in article that Blake is transgender. Uses pronouns ‘she’ and refers to Blake as a woman.

bbc article here https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-68401335

These are not our crimes. I am reporting the omission of the fact Blake is transgender to Ofcom. I wonder if anyone is thinking the same (about reporting to ofcom, here is the link: https://www.ofcom.org.uk/complaints )

Make a complaint

Ofcom may be able to help you complain about phone, broadband and postal services, TV, radio and on-demand programmes, interference to wireless devices, or something you have seen on a video-sharing platform.

Should have updated the thread before I pressed send to BBC, clearly!

fabio12 · 26/02/2024 18:26

I noticed it on a previous article about the same murder. I think Miss Representation on FB has picked up on it too but that was the only other place I'd seen it mentioned.

Yepidid · 26/02/2024 18:28

I didn't even realise it was a biological man.
So horrified by the cat murder I missed that bit.
I did think it was a bit unusual for a women to kill in this way.

fabio12 · 26/02/2024 18:36

That's it isn't it, I think a lot of women were like "whaaaat?" and now it makes more sense. Shows how much of these crimes we recognise as male behaviour.

The BBC News at 6 has made it clear that Scarlett Blake is a transgender woman who is going to a men's prison. Maybe those early complaints have had an impact.

I know some posters don't like this but I personally can accept news sources using she/hers pronouns as long as they make it clear this is a reference to a transgender woman. Obviously crimes commited by transgender women should not be recorded in the statistics for women's crimes.

Of course there are a lot of people who think a transgender woman is a woman identifying as a man, not a man identifying as a woman.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 26/02/2024 18:40

Worth remembering that his placement in a male prison has only happened because of a massive campaign from women - especially KPSS - to get these dangerous men out of women's prisons. The trans captured MoJ had been leading the charge to wedge all of them into the women's estate. They still have a "no male with convictions for violence / sex crimes - except in very special circumstances that we won't explain but will use whenever the transactivists in the MoJ decide they want a "special" violent man in prison with women"

Infuriating and unforgivable.

Chersfrozenface · 26/02/2024 18:41

How many people are puzzling about this?

"The BBC says she's transgender. And that she's going to a men's prison. So she's a woman who says she's a man and insists on going to a men's prison?"

ErrolTheDragon · 26/02/2024 18:43

I couldn’t care less if someone I’ve never met is the same gender as me or not. Utterly immaterial.

It is indeed.
Their sex, otoh, is entirely material.

Kalevala · 26/02/2024 18:45

I tried to make a complaint but they didn't send the confirm email link for ages (I refreshed and checked spam for 5 minutes) so then it was over the 60 minutes when I noticed it had come through. I don't think they want complaints. Now I'll have to type it again.

I mean, there are bigger things to worry about and they’ve already changed it. Seems like a non-issue 😵‍💫

You have violent males like this being missexed as female in reporting, than the manosphere misogynists come along as say "see, women are just as bad" using the missexed news reports to bolster their claims.

These are not women's crimes.

DyslexicPoster · 26/02/2024 18:47

People born as biological male should not be bumping up the figures of violent and nearly always sexualy motivated violence carried out by women.

If they must be recorded as non male then it should be a transgender.

I was wondering how she overpowered him. I only hear just now how. I think it's wrong.

Yes, it confused me when I already knew transwoman and transman. I thought a transgender woman meant a woman who is transgender, otherwise known as a transman.

2dogsandabudgie · 26/02/2024 18:48

I have already emailed a complaint to the BBC about factually incorrect reporting. This issue is so important. Await their response with interest.

Reluctantcareprovider · 26/02/2024 18:50

ITV just done same on 6;30 news. Issued complaint

Curious if OP also takes the same approach with ethnic minorities or perhaps the disabled. If they commit crimes, does she also require a disclaimer because they’re not “her” crimes?

I couldn’t care less if someone I’ve never met is the same gender as me or not. Utterly immaterial.

There are many fair arguments and issues around trans, but this is just weird bigotry.

It is not fair to add this crime to the stats of crimes committed by women. If you set any importance at all in statistical analysis of criminal acts and behaviour then it’s important to record this correctly as a male on male sexually motivated crime, not a female on male sexually motivated crime. If you’re female by birth and happy that such horrendous crimes are attributed to your birth sex then that’s fine but don’t expect all women to agree.

MissMillyMollyMandyy · 26/02/2024 18:52

I'd like to know what prison he will be sent to?

You couldn't be more racist or ablist if you tried.

Men commit over 90% of violent crimes and over 98% of sexual offending. The difference in offending rates between different racial groups is so small as to be statistical noise and is negligible in practice. Disabled people are more likely to be assaulted than to commit assault.

Comparing sex to race is racist. Comparing sex to disability is ablist. And both are sexist.

MissMillyMollyMandyy · 26/02/2024 18:53

As in, male or female prison ...

Male. It's been mentioned on the thread.

GreenYoshi12 · 26/02/2024 18:54

But they’re not reporting incorrectly. They are reporting about the CRIME not the person.

Saltandpeppero · 26/02/2024 18:55

It does say this : The Ministry of Justice said Blake, who is transgender, would serve the sentence in a men's prison

Reporting on the crime includes reporting on the perp and victims. There is a public interest in reporting being accurate.

GreenYoshi12 · 26/02/2024 18:56

Farmageddon · 26/02/2024 17:28

Exactly, when the victim is transgender it all very clearly stated. But when a perpetrator is, they seem to try and hide it - like as though it doesn't fit with the 'most vulnerable' narrative.

They mentioned it then because her being trans was a main issue and cause in her death. This is not a trans issue which is why it’s not mentioned. It’s murder plain and simple.

Murder is a majority-male crime. This report makes it look like a woman did it when in fact a man did. This slanders women as a class.

fabio12 · 26/02/2024 18:58

I personally think that once a crime is committed and sentencing reported they should be referred to in their biological sex by authorities and news outlets rather than whatever they choose.
