Has anyone seen this recent article on the transgender (trans woman) Scarlett Blake who was sentenced to 24 years today for murdering a man. Blake also killed a cat. Pls see this recent article from bbc news. BBC news puts nowhere in article that Blake is transgender. Uses pronouns ‘she’ and refers to Blake as a woman.

bbc article here https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-68401335

These are not our crimes. I am reporting the omission of the fact Blake is transgender to Ofcom. I wonder if anyone is thinking the same (about reporting to ofcom, here is the link: https://www.ofcom.org.uk/complaints )

Make a complaint

Ofcom may be able to help you complain about phone, broadband and postal services, TV, radio and on-demand programmes, interference to wireless devices, or something you have seen on a video-sharing platform.

What struck me as particularly abhorrent was that Jorge Carreno’s brothers were forced to refer to Blake as “her” and “she”
in their impact statement.

I complained about Isla Bryson last year and got nowhere. They are too captured by nonsense.

They will sit up and take notice if enough people complain.

I would have refused to do that, under the circumstances, 'it' would have been more appropriate.

Isla Bryson is actually a pretty good example of action being taken.

Post Isla, MPs were swamped with complaints. The prison rules were subjected to massive scrutiny. Sturgeon stepped down. The prison rules were changed.

The Times article on the sentencing had comments enabled for a while, but they were shut down sharpish.

Whatkindofworld · 26/02/2024 16:37

I’ve just seen it reported on the BBC news. No mention of being a man or Transgender. Just She and woman.

magicmole · 26/02/2024 16:38

AllGrownUp1465 · 26/02/2024 15:19

I mean, there are bigger things to worry about and they’ve already changed it. Seems like a non-issue 😵‍💫

They only changed it in response to pressure. And it keeps happening again and again across the media. I've heard and seen this person repeatedly described as a woman today - not as a transwoman or trans identifying. The result is that I've also seen people on social media asking why women are getting more violent! These are not our crimes.

As this solicitor points out, some crimes are so rarely committed by females that including just one male in the crime stats can massively distort them.

"TW Lauren Jeska being convicted for attempted murder falsely elevated the number of women convicted for this offence by 20%"

Journalists are taught crime reporting as a specific part of their training because accuracy matters when reporting legal cases. So I don't think it's too much to expect it from them. Misinformation/disinformation undermines trust in the media and that isn't a non-issue for me.

Also,

If you think you're too small to make an impact, imagine going to bed with a mosquito in the room.

And there they are, the naysayers - right on cue.

Yes it does fucking matter @AllGrownUp1465. These hideous acts are being recorded as having been committed by a woman when they were committed by a man and are typically male crimes. Women seldom commit crimes anything like these.

Our history is being altered by these wretches. Our future is being compromised by these devils.

Don't tell me it doesn't matter.

100% this. It is absolutely the biggest issue for many people. This murderer is not a woman, and these are not women's crimes. This pernicious ideology is founded on lies and the BBC and MSM are complicit in spreading misinformation and lies.

pieceofpasta · 26/02/2024 15:27

They reported it on the news at 1.10 that it was a woman. No mention of trans identity.

Appalling 🤬🤬

Villagetoraiseachild · 26/02/2024 16:40

Or for Scotland, a midgie in your tent....

StellaOlivetti · 26/02/2024 16:40

I have complained. My mum who is not in the least mentally confused even though she’s in her eighties was unclear whether this person was male or female. The reporting was not clear enough. And of course it matters.

akkakk · 26/02/2024 16:41

The telegraph carries an article on this headlined:

Guardian writer boycotts newspaper for failing to tell readers ‘cat killer’ murderer was transgender

Louise Tickle accuses the newspaper of ‘deceiving its readers’ for using the word ‘woman’ in its headline

well done her...

Yirk · 26/02/2024 16:43

The daily mail Saturday needed calling out also, they referred to her as a woman and used she / her, when will this crap stop !

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 26/02/2024 16:44

Misreporting absolutely matters. Every time the reporting about a trans-identifying male paedophile is unclear, there are people in the tabloid comments saying it's another example of how women get lighter sentences than men for sexually abusing children. When it's a man who has abused children, and who is not going to prison for it!

Redcar78 · 26/02/2024 16:46

I complained a few days ago, looking at the article now I think they have changed it, am sure it started with 'a woman has' rather than a murderer.

Pirelli · 26/02/2024 16:46

Complain, complain, complain. And, boycott. We need to protect women's rights.

Edited

They've dropped 'woman' but they are still using 'she'.

I've already complained last week to the BBC.

OFcom generally ask that BBC complaints go through the BBC process first, of which there are three levels, before going to Ofcom.

But in this instance it's across so many media platforms and it's so egregious that I think we need to go to parliament. Fuck Ofcom, fuck the BBC. We need an enquiry into this.

The press are lying to us. Bald faced fucking lies.

As for 'it doesnt matter'

Have a wee look at social media and see how people are talking about this crime.

Fury, understandably. And also questions about why women are becoming more violent, it's being used as justification that women are 'as bad as men'.

The truth is that male violence is by order of magnitudes more of a problem for society than female violence.

The stats are stark.

#notourcrimes

I’ve said before that this feels like the ultimate DARVO.

ISeeTheLight · 26/02/2024 16:50

I have also complained OP. This does matter.

Dexterrolledoffthesofa · 26/02/2024 16:52

Complaint sent.

Villagetoraiseachild · 26/02/2024 16:57

Gutted for Jose Carreno's parents and family. He was one of triplets and his family gave him a beautiful tribute. They deserve the truth here also.

The Guardian seems to be trying to avoid further criticism by not reporting on the sentencing at all.

Farmageddon · 26/02/2024 17:06

Unfortunately, newspapers are taking direction from the IPSO guidance -

https://www.ipso.co.uk/media/2423/guidance-sex-gender-identity.pdf

It's weird because on the one hand they state that reporting should be accurate and not misleading, but then go on to state that preferred gender identity and pronouns etc. should be used.

That is not accurate in my view. Particularly when discussing a convicted killer.
