Has anyone seen this recent article on the transgender (trans woman) Scarlett Blake who was sentenced to 24 years today for murdering a man. Blake also killed a cat. Pls see this recent article from bbc news. BBC news puts nowhere in article that Blake is transgender. Uses pronouns ‘she’ and refers to Blake as a woman.

bbc article here https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-68401335

These are not our crimes. I am reporting the omission of the fact Blake is transgender to Ofcom. I wonder if anyone is thinking the same (about reporting to ofcom, here is the link: https://www.ofcom.org.uk/complaints )

Make a complaint

Ofcom may be able to help you complain about phone, broadband and postal services, TV, radio and on-demand programmes, interference to wireless devices, or something you have seen on a video-sharing platform.

For comparison this is how they used to report on these men, it would be in the headline or the opening paragraph:

BBC News | UK | Transsexual man jailed in women's prison

bluecoattrain · 26/02/2024 17:13

Yes, I saw that on several news sites and it wasn't until almost the end of the article they mentioned the perpetrator was a transwoman.

RememberTheComplimentsForgetTheInsults · 26/02/2024 17:13

I've complained to BBC before about a similar report and their response was that they go with whatever the person identifies as.

Jackiebrambles · 26/02/2024 17:14

Yes it’s shockingly misleading reporting. I complained last week. I notice in the latest bbc report they haven’t said where Blake will be sent - men’s prison? Or not? Not sure whether that info would be available yet.

A cat then. Oh wait, they didn't use that, did they. Lying bastards.

And such a contrast to the reporting on Brianna Ghey, where no one could be left in any doubt that Brianna was transgender, though I suppose some people could have been unclear about whether Brianna was MtF or FtM.

Exactly, when the victim is transgender it all very clearly stated. But when a perpetrator is, they seem to try and hide it - like as though it doesn't fit with the 'most vulnerable' narrative.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 26/02/2024 17:29

To make it worse I just read the article and it states blake was previously known as Alice Wang so doubling down on them being a woman. It really does imply this person was born female .

cerisepanther73 · 26/02/2024 17:31

It's extremely important society knows a transgender woman committed this extremely disturbing sick twisted crime

As this kind of thing sets a precedence for other horrific minded future crimes that could be committed by this demographics of our society,

what another poster said on their post that on the Internet people were debating 🤔 why women are becoming more violent

the disturbing torture and killing of domestic pet was the alarm ⏰️🔔 bell red banner ect...

SkiingIsHeaven · 26/02/2024 17:36

My husband just asked me if I had "seen the article about the crazy woman who killed a cat and then a human."

When I told him that the murderer was a man he asked me why I was getting so worked up about it.

Normally he gets why I get annoying when it comes to sports and safe spaces etc. but not this for some reason.

HE. He. He. He.

These are not the sort of crimes women EVER commit for sexual gratification.

He.

MOJ have confirmed men's prison, according to the BBC .

MMAMPWGHAP · 26/02/2024 17:53

Hate the fact he’s being called she. Tried to leave a comment on the Times article but can’t.

But just as bad is that he’s being called the CAT killer when he killed a PERSON.

Imustgoforarun · 26/02/2024 18:02

It’s important that statistics are correct for future generations to trust and study. At the moment women’s stats are being messed around. Women don’t generally commit crimes like this. But if we had one women commit this type of crime and now we have two that’s 100% increase! It’s misleading. Also funding ie grants is directed at orgs who use these stats.

KnickerlessParsons · 26/02/2024 18:03

"(SB) led him to a scheduled riverbank where he was hit on the back of the head with a vodka bottle, strangled and then pushed into the River Cherwell"

It's just not a crime a woman would commit.

AmaryllisChorus · 26/02/2024 18:08

Floisme · 26/02/2024 15:37

I think it's a pretty big deal if the BBC is reporting news incorrectly.
Once trust in a news source has been corroded then it's very hard to win it back.

I do too. If facts are so mutable and it's legitimate to report one thing as being another, where does the justification for this practice end? What else can BBC lie about because it suits their narrative, even though it is written in their charter to educate and inform?

Balhammom · 26/02/2024 18:12

Curious if OP also takes the same approach with ethnic minorities or perhaps the disabled. If they commit crimes, does she also require a disclaimer because they’re not “her” crimes?

I couldn’t care less if someone I’ve never met is the same gender as me or not. Utterly immaterial.

There are many fair arguments and issues around trans, but this is just weird bigotry.

Stupid analogy that doesn't even work in this context.

StiggyZardust · 26/02/2024 18:15

BBC 1 has just persistently referred to him as she. Despite reporting that he's going to a men's prison Ridiculous.

LizzieSiddal · 26/02/2024 18:15

The BBC did just report correctly on Radio 4s PM programme.
They said a transwoman had been sentenced for 24(?) years and will serve it in a men’s prison.

I think they have to because of Ofcom guidelines. However ever should always make clear it is a transwoman to whom they are referring to.

Article is now clear, it includes the paragraph

The Ministry of Justice said Blake, who is transgender, would serve the sentence in a men's prison.

fabio12 · 26/02/2024 18:24

I've complained. It's not the only time they've done it either.

CBStrike · 26/02/2024 18:25

I heard this on LBC on the way home and they also reported it was a woman, I assumed it was!

nettie434 · 26/02/2024 18:25

The BBC News at 6 has made it clear that Scarlett Blake is a transgender woman who is going to a men's prison. Maybe those early complaints have had an impact.

I know some posters don't like this but I personally can accept news sources using she/hers pronouns as long as they make it clear this is a reference to a transgender woman. Obviously crimes commited by transgender women should not be recorded in the statistics for women's crimes.

Slothtoes · 26/02/2024 18:25

This was really awful reporting and very confusing. I only realised from MN that this ‘woman’ was male. Who are the BBC trying to benefit here? Why is it OK for the BBC to be framing women for this?
Not our crime. This is male violence.
