Be interesting to see who Emily Bridges’ lawyer is. A man? A man who says he’s a woman? A woman? A man who says he isn’t a man or a woman? A woman who says she isn’t a woman or a man?

Shall we guess?

I am thankful for Emily and his mum for pushing this issue into the public’s consciousness. They finally forced cycling to stop hiding from the issue. British Cycling and Cycling Time Trials have now changed their policy but we must remember that British Cycling still allow self-id in non-competitive womens cycling and Audax UK hasn’t budged one bit.

Audax UK hasn’t budged one bit.

Do they even offer sexed events? I thought randonneuring was unisex.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 20/02/2024 20:54

I dont understand why TRA don't focus first on female trans people inclusion in sport. They are the ones who are more likely to be excluded if they take T.

With the best will in the world, its unlikely that any trans person would be able to compete in the wrong sex league without being 'clocked', so the idea of an open category outing them doesnt really make much sense.

If a women was good enough to compete in the male category, she wouldn't feel invalidated. Winning would be a huge achievement. Maybe bridges should have the same attitude?

OhcantthInkofaname · 20/02/2024 21:01

"She is concerned for her safety if she is required to compete against males" THIS is exactly why women don't want Bridges in their competitions.

Much of the funding came from feminists and men who wanted this test in court. It seemed that Curtiss didn't quite like that the money didn't come from people sympathetic to Curtiss.

It's interesting how some of the GC side's approach to legal cases is "we will fund the legal challenges by the people we disagree with if it gets this issue into court". It's clear that we value truth, justice, and transparency.

Froodwithatowel · 20/02/2024 21:02

Having just seen the video of the male player hurling a woman basket ball player to the floor, the third woman he'd injured in the course of the game before the game was stopped and the team surrendered (in case so many of their team were injured they couldn't play an up coming game) ....

I'm honestly not that bothered re wittering about 'safety'. It's not like these males have any fucks to spare for anyone else's, is it?

I don’t think they do sexed events per se but I’m led to believe you have to register your gender identity rather than sex when you sign up. I know women have complained and told to stop making a fuss.

SamW98 · 20/02/2024 21:05

and does not like transgender women having to 'out' themselves to compete in the category

Let's be honest, those skin tight Lycra shorts do the outing without a word being said.

If they don't operate sexed events, why are they collecting gender identity even as a poor proxy for sex? Diversity monitoring? In which case they are still wrong because the EA characteristic is sex.

Yes. I’d love to hear Bridges explain what makes it unsafe for a transwoman to compete with men, but which does not make it unsafe for a transwoman to compete with women.

(I suspect the important difference is who it’s unsafe for.)

I don't actually understand what went on with the basketball. Is it not against the rules to chuck other players on the ground? Why does he get to continue playing instead of being thrown out of the game? (I know nothing about basketball.

EmilysNailVarnish · 20/02/2024 21:14

Exactly. Women are woefully underrepresented in long distance cycling. How on earth can they monitor how many are taking part if they don’t ask for sex?

Who'd have thought you should be female at birth to compete in womens sports 😱

Who'd have thought you should be female at birth to compete in womens sports
Fixed it for you. Sex is determined at conception and is immutable.

However, if the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that the powers-that-be (in some sports at least) and hangers-on (certain Guardian sports journalists) really do think that male women are much more worthy of sporting inclusion than boring old female women will ever be.

I don't think it's a rule that's specific to basketball. I think it's like Catch-22 and can apply to an astonishing range of circumstances.

I think it's the Sacred Caste Exemption: from Parkrun to the Olympics, no activity is too grassroots or so élite that it doesn't apply.

Girlontherailreplacementbusservice · 20/02/2024 21:26

Does Bridges think no female cyclist has legs even half the size of Sir Chris Hoy's (get well soon Sir Chris) because they are too distracted by hair and make up to train?
Has Bridges not worked out that it is Dame Laura not Sir Jason that has had to work a career around pregnancy, child birth and devastating miscarriage. While I'm sure both Kennys were emotionally affected by their losses I'm pretty sure that like in the Busservice household it was only the female bodied person person that did the physical bit.

It was 1984 before there was a women's marathon in the Olympics.

Other events are surprisingly recent for their introduction for women.

I suspect several of these will have been introduced to be ceded almost from their inception. (I'm thinking of the Winter Olympics were several events are comparatively new and women's even more so.)

If you "feel " like a Woman that's all that matters,oh and long hair that you can swish around.

I didn't mean he should have been stopped because he's a male and playing in the wrong game, I meant he should have been stopped for throwing other players on the floor. Is that allowed then? In football it would be a foul, would it not? (I don't know much about football either).

Indeed.
On the same day that we have a thread running where a ftm six-footer on a girls' basketball team leaves three of them injured before the match is even finished. One of the girls filmed writing in pain on the ground as Hulk struts off across the court. Yeah, we know who gets hurt by transwomen in women's sports.

Poor poor poor Emily, having to compete against men.
Bless.

Oh my days! What a self pitying interview! So you feel unsafe around men and don't want to race in an uncategorised race? Well how do you think us women feel about men in our spaces???

Transwoman feels unsafe around men = TW is lauded and hailed as brave and stunning. Women are told to shut up, budge up and make room.

Women feel unsafe around transwoman = they are told they are bigots, told to shut up, budge up and make room.

That's their go to gaslighting answer to everything. Women defending their rights and their identities are 'violent'. Diddums.

It's not allowed to shove female cyclists off the track, but Killips, a male transitioner, repeatedly got away with that in a race. They is on film using their bike as a weapon to push Hannah Arensman over, and the officials just ignored it.

Thanks to @UltraLiteLife who found the cyclists' names.
