Lesbian members club to only allow biological women

JanesLittleGirl · 18/02/2024 12:52

"A FEMINIST campaigner is to open the UK’s first lesbian members bar that will only allow biological women to join.

The bar, named the L Community, is due to open in London later this year and will operate as a private members club so that it can bar trans women.

The bar has been set up by Jenny Watson, who in September last year was at the centre of a transphobia row after she insisted only “adult human females” could attend the lesbian speed-dating events she had organised."

I'll get an archive link in a bit.

And yet gender non-conforming women are mistaken for trans women by other women, and they can fail to recognise trans women. How will this club enforce its policy - “we can just tell?”

Sometimes someone's sex can seem ambiguous at a glance, or at a distance, or when they are standing still - but the moment they speak or move, it is very apparent which sex they are. Whether they are gender non-conforming is immaterial. I know a couple of very "butch" women who are still most definitely and obviously female.

Photographs are more difficult because of filters etc.

AND - men tend to be more confused by gender-ambiguity than women are. It all comes down to an evolutionary awareness of danger . . .

Edited because autocarrot isn't fecking telling me what I can say

Yes, reinforcing the sterotype that transwomen don't respect boundaries.

Yes, isn't that a little....transphobic?

I'm not a lesbian so I wouldn't want to enter this space that's not meant for me. Unless I was invited in by a lesbian friend and sure that I wasn't pissing lesbians off by being there.
Why do men feel entitled to do that?

JacksonLambsEatIvy · 21/02/2024 08:55

Who cares if some women might choose to present themselves in a gender non-conforming way?

That doesn’t mean that men who want people to identify them as women have a right to lie or force their way into female-only spaces.

This is the ‘well she wore a short skirt’ line argumentation.

Very much this. There are quite a few lesbians down my sports club, some present in a very 'feminine' way, others a bit more androgynous insofar as gender neutral clothing, short hair, no make up, into power lifting etc so can be a bit ambiguous at first glance however the moment they walk and talk any shred of doubt evaporates.

popebishop · 21/02/2024 09:10

It does raise the question that if females are commonly indistinguishable from males, what is to be gained by anyone transitioning?

popebishop · 21/02/2024 09:12

^ by "it", I mean DadJoke's claim, which I don't believe to be true.

JacksonLambsEatIvy · 21/02/2024 09:13

Just because some people might find it hard to distinguish some people’s sex, does not mean sex doesn’t matter.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 21/02/2024 09:15

That's a lovely thought but I don't think they'd thank you for it. It's hard enough for lesbians to meet other likeminded lesbians without having straight women around clogging up the works, as it were.

//

Just googled and Penis News and the like are a screeching to all about how transphobic this is.

This shit has to stop.

I would be very interested in sponsoring a membership or other ways to support as a hetero woman (the cunty kind) ... does anyone know if this is possible?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 21/02/2024 09:19

Dadjoke it's weird as could just be chance but whenever I see your username pop up it's only ever to criticise, question or challenge biological women talking about their sage spaces and the need for this.

Why is that? Or am I missing all the posts where you ever do the opposite?

ADoggyDogWorld · 21/02/2024 08:22

Any ways back to the OP.

Best wishes to Jenny, she's a mighty woman.

Absolutely this

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 21/02/2024 09:22

Safe spaces , rather

Although sage spaces also sound lovely Grin

Apollo441 · 21/02/2024 09:31

Back in the 80's we had no problem identifying women be they goths, butch lesbians or had short hair. Nothing has changed. This bollocks that gender non conforming women are being hassled and so we have to let men into single sex spaces is just that, bollocks.
Look @DadJoke I'll stand in the street with you and identify the sex of EVERY single person who walks by all day. I don't have a magic skill, infact anyone can do it. Well anyone apart from TRAs it seems.
This isn't an issue. Stop lying. Absolutely no one believes you.

BezMills · 21/02/2024 09:32

The idea that lesbians will get confused between a woman wearing comfy shoes, jorts and a plaid shirt vs a man in a short skirt wearing high heels and a ton of makeup...

PriOn1 · 18/02/2024 16:16

I only hope that young lesbians feel able to join. It would be incredibly sad if they bypassed this opportunity out of some kind of misguided loyalty.

Anyway, it’s great that it’s happening for Jenny. I really appreciate the courage of women who are standing up for other women.

I worry that too many young lesbians, especially the ones who used to call themselves butch (don't know if that is still an acceptable term - apologies if not) now think they are men because their confusion has been swallowed whole by the trans movement.

And yes, good for her, setting up a club for lesbians. No further qualification of what lesbian means should be necessary.

SamW98 · 21/02/2024 09:36

Just seen on penis, sorry pink news that ‘experts’ claim being inclusive of trans customers is essential

Just fuck off and let women have something of their own to enjoy without pandering to the penis.

Not everything is transphobic ffs

JacksonLambsEatIvy · 21/02/2024 09:41

By ‘experts’ they mean men. Don’t they?

pink news… promoting homophobia and denying lesbians the ability to have single sex, lesbian clubs. Because that’s what pink news wa set up to achieve.

TheClogLady · 21/02/2024 09:56

Bit transphobic to assume that males with a transgender identity will try to join a club that is for exclusively for homosexual females, @DadJoke - you must have a very low opinion of transgender people?

Maybe you should do a Stonewall course re: examining your prejudice…

I’m not assuming any such thing. I can’t imagine that transgender lesbians would want to hang out with a bunch of .., gender critical lesbians.

As for passing, honestly, this forum is the living embodiment of the toupee fallacy.

“I've never seen a trans woman in real life who passed!"

"Well, yeah. If they didn't pass, you wouldn't notice they were transgender!"

TheCadoganArms · 21/02/2024 10:05

@DadJoke

You seriously quoting Pink News??? A bit like reading The Express for an informed and balanced article on Brexit.

Look up the names of the individuals for other news sources, though your usual outlet the Mail doesn’t run with such stories.

So why did you question the new club’s membership process?

If no transbians at going to try and get in anyway, the club won’t need to find a way to identify their applications!

you aren’t being very consistent.

Good for them and may a fabulous time be had !

BezMills · 21/02/2024 10:22

I hope it goes well, it's a good idea. Maybe some trans men will rock up to get peace from the TW merailing all the conversations all the time
