Lesbian members club to only allow biological women

"A FEMINIST campaigner is to open the UK’s first lesbian members bar that will only allow biological women to join.

The bar, named the L Community, is due to open in London later this year and will operate as a private members club so that it can bar trans women.

The bar has been set up by Jenny Watson, who in September last year was at the centre of a transphobia row after she insisted only “adult human females” could attend the lesbian speed-dating events she had organised."

I'll get an archive link in a bit.

Good for her. Don’t see the problem with no penises. Her club, her choice.

AlisonDonut · 18/02/2024 13:35

She ran a lesbian club for years and only stopped after a male kept harassing the female participants.

FabulouslyFab · 18/02/2024 13:38

Well done to that lady. I’m sure her club will be a success.

LondonWasps · 18/02/2024 13:39

I wonder how long before the petulant foot stamping starts…

3peassuit · 18/02/2024 13:40

Good for her. I wish her ever success.

Snowypeaks · 18/02/2024 14:06

Well done, Jenny Watson. Remarkable young woman. I can't open the archive link, but I hope she has a cast-iron lease agreement for her venue.

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 18/02/2024 14:09

Excellent, good for her…

LadyBird1973 · 18/02/2024 16:10

I still can't quite get my head around how, in 2024, it's considered controversial for a lesbian club to only want women as members.

TheSlantedOwl · 18/02/2024 16:11

Good for her. A brave move.

It’s fucking crazy that it should even be an issue.

ollypollymolly · 18/02/2024 16:12

I am not a lesbian but want to join to show solidarity!

PriOn1 · 18/02/2024 16:16

I only hope that young lesbians feel able to join. It would be incredibly sad if they bypassed this opportunity out of some kind of misguided loyalty.

Anyway, it’s great that it’s happening for Jenny. I really appreciate the courage of women who are standing up for other women.

WibblyWobblyWeeble · 18/02/2024 16:18

Brilliant 👏

thatsthewayitis · 18/02/2024 16:37

Good for Jenny. My lesbian social group started to die due to admitting trans-identified men back in 2015 and I could see the end.
Women cannot yield an inch to these selfish men. Michfest in the US was the early warning.

nothingcomestonothing · 18/02/2024 16:47

I don't like that phraseology. It's not so they can bar TW, that's still centring TW. It's not about fecking TW. It's about actual inclusiveness for lesbians, not exclusion for everyone else. Not everything is about TW.

That's a lovely thought but I don't think they'd thank you for it. It's hard enough for lesbians to meet other likeminded lesbians without having straight women around clogging up the works, as it were.

Exactly, progress is grand ain't it.

Well done to Jenny and I wish her and all the lesbians who sign up the very best, despite wishing it was not the case that this is what had to be done in order for lesbians to have the freedom to meet without males invading their space.

Maybe offer to sponsor a membership for a woman who is eligible but can't afford to join?

I mean it should be a given No Penis allowed ! Good for her.

ollypollymolly · 18/02/2024 18:16

Yeah maybe they could offer gift membership to support but not turn up ….

Great idea, I'd do that cos I'm nowhere near the er.. catchment area.
Kinda like traditional MN gardening, but in nice little window boxes instead of huge legal battlegrounds🌷🌷

I’d do that - be a sort of registered supporter, rather than a member, seeing as I’m not a lesbian.

Obvs I really hope that long-term it will be a financially viable project without the need for extra funders, but seeing as existing pubs/clubs of all types are currently struggling, it would be nice to offer them a little cushioning while they establish themselves.

Maybe Jenny could host a once-yearly shindig for the registered supporters? With a member’s vouching system/pre vetting if necessary

Fond memories of being a guest of Lesbian friends at Glass Bar in the early 2000s!

Me too.

I am wondering how she's going to check that all the women applying for membership are actually women though.

There are verification apps that check photos for sex markers. Sall Grover of Giggle uses them and if there are any women rejected they can appeal and a human being checks.

HermioneWeasley · 18/02/2024 18:50

Good for her
