Starmer: "trans-inclusive" conversion therapy ban, "modernise" the GRA, all hate crime to be aggravated offences as part of making every child "proud and confident"

Exclusive in Diva, following a reception at a LGBT+ Labour event in Parliament on 29 Jan:

https://diva-magazine.com/2024/01/29/exclusive-keir-starmer-lgbtqia-rights/

"“We’ll strengthen the law, so every category of hate crime is treated as an aggravated offence,” Starmer said. “We’ll cut NHS waiting lists for LGBT+ people waiting for urgent physical and mental health care. We’ll modernise the Gender Recognition Act. We’ll implement a full, trans-inclusive, ban on all forms of conversion therapy. We fully support the view that conversion therapy is psychologically damaging abuse.”

“We are committed to a decade of national renewal and will work with all the organisations in this room tonight so every child can feel proud and confident in who they are, to stand up for LGBT+ rights at home and abroad and to get Britain’s future back.”

The mention of children is unclear but must have a background to the full speech? LGBT Labour hasn't tweeted about it but others have. Rayner and Dodds also in attendance.

Should people send the link to this thread to their labour councillors and MPs?

Or are we seen as a blip against the nonsense?

They think we won't go through with it.

Little do they know that when children are at risk, or the safety of other women is threatened, most women will throw themselves into the fray without a thought for personal safety.

We'll do it.

Last few votes I've cast I've deliberately spoiled with "Respect my sex" etc.

This time it won't just be one less for Labour, it will be one more for the Tories (so effectively 2 less for Labour)

You could send them the Diva link and ask them to tell you in plain English, what Labour's policies will be.

  • will Labour bring in the affirmation model for gender-questioning children?
  • will parents have their children removed if they urge watchful waiting?
  • will anyone who questions the affirmation model, be subject to a hate crime prosecution?
  • tell me which parts of the GRA you will modernise, how and why. Who else have you ascertained such modernisation will impact?

And so on...

If you say to him "Are you sure?" you will be charged with administering conversion therapy.

Due to some MN emails complaining about my posts, I must clarify that saying "Are you sure" will probably not, at this time get you charged with administering conversion therapy", this was what is known as "exaggeration to make a point".

This is important. A canvasser for the Labour Party doorstepped us over the weekend. She was unmoved by my explanation as to why I won't vote for Labour. All she wanted to know is "would I vote Tory instead?"

It does seem that Labour are worried that enough of us unspeakables could damage their working majority if we transfer our (protest) vote to the Tories instead of wasting it. So perhaps we should make it clear to their monitors that it will be when, not if.

HelenFisksBrownSuit · 30/01/2024 19:16

Tory it is, then.

fromorbit · 30/01/2024 19:17

Thing is Starmer has backtracked on a lot of pledges. He will say the opposite to this next time he is on Mumsnet.

I totally get the many here with those who say that they can't trust him and won't vote for him. There is no reason to clearly because he has flipped multiple times. The thing is the TRAs also hate him as well.

Starmer ultimately will side on this with those who offer him the biggest advantage. So that is what we need to work on. The only thing Starmer will respect is power - legal power, popularity etc. If we keep the pressure on, keep getting wins he will stab the TRAs in the back. If on the other hand we start again losing ground he will turn against women/gays more.

We have to make it too risky for him to attack women's rights. The same applies to Tories as well. A significant set of the Tories would sell out women's rights in an instant for enough status/cash.

We are on the way to gaining enough legal wins to be able force political parties to listen to reality. They will kick and scream like brattish kids, who want to play daft games, but their mums are going to tell them off and confiscate their toys and tell them playtime is over.

The Greens are about to face a bedtime curfew. Labour and the SNP will be next.

Froodwithatowel · 30/01/2024 19:20

Not to contradict you, but it seems unlikely he'll say anything the next time he's on mumsnet. None of them do, and he's worse than most judging by his visit here during the Labour Leadership. They take pre selected questions and answer with a bunch of detached, patronising waffle sound bites, with no engagement or reply.

Frankly they don't have the nerve, not once they realised women here actually had brains and political interests and weren't just going to chunter nicely about biscuits.

I don't know who I'll be voting for but it won't be this invertebrate and his merry band of pandering shitwits.

Thank you for a wonderful turn of phrase.

I'm going to have to vote conservative then, was really hoping to avoid that.

quite possibly they will be voted but who knows

I am foreign so will be just watching

WaterHound · 30/01/2024 19:38

Please don't vote Tory because of this single (extremely important) issue. I know it affects over 50% of us detrimentally, but Tory policy affects even more of us detrimentally - all but the very wealthy

So sick of this shit FFS. Tell Starmer.

duc748 · 30/01/2024 19:45

I've never voted Tory in my life, and I'm damned if I'm going to start now. But I shan't be voting for Starmer either. If there's a Communist candidate....

Likewise.

So fed up with the concept that women should suck this shit up for the greater good.

No. I'm done.

It's misogyny in action - sacrificing women's interests time and time again on the basis that we should prioritise everyone else.

I'm voting Tory for the first time ever and I'm not going to feel ashamed about it.

Boiledbeetle · 30/01/2024 19:49

lifeturnsonadime · 30/01/2024 10:49

So all of us that said that Labour couldn't be trusted on women's rights were right then? Colour me shocked!

And it is shocking. Labour can't be immune to the impact that this ideology has had on women. They must KNOW what has happened in recent Employment Tribunals and how women have been treated, even in rape crisis centres.

They can fuck right off if they think they will get my vote.

Such a disappointment.

So I'm just catching up on whaf I've missed today, and appreciate this thread may have moved on by the time i catch up to my own comment.

But...

What👆said!

I've been spoiling my ballot also.

No more.

I've given them time to get their act together and now I'm done.

My local GC Tory candidate will get my vote.

Boiledbeetle · 30/01/2024 20:01

Now I've caught up!

As a fully paid up member of the Labour Party I want to say

FUCK OFF STARMER I'M NOT VOTING FOR LABOUR AND YOUR SHITE IDEAS

I have put it into my Bumper Book of Useful Words and Phrases.

"I hope Starmer gets his chocolate starfish salad tossed arse handed to him on a plate garnished with parsley and a wedge of lemon."

Dear lord. He hasn't said anything different to usual really.
Labour have been saying for months they would "streamline the GRA" (as do the Tories).
"Conversion therapy", well it depends what that means. I'd hope we would all be behind banning Scientology/religious style "conversions" carried out by random people. He hasn't said he backs affirmative therapy.

Vote who you like but really this "I knew he couldn't be trusted" is a bit OTT off the back of a speech at an LGBT+ event.
