Starmer: "trans-inclusive" conversion therapy ban, "modernise" the GRA, all hate crime to be aggravated offences as part of making every child "proud and confident"

Exclusive in Diva, following a reception at a LGBT+ Labour event in Parliament on 29 Jan:

https://diva-magazine.com/2024/01/29/exclusive-keir-starmer-lgbtqia-rights/

"“We’ll strengthen the law, so every category of hate crime is treated as an aggravated offence,” Starmer said. “We’ll cut NHS waiting lists for LGBT+ people waiting for urgent physical and mental health care. We’ll modernise the Gender Recognition Act. We’ll implement a full, trans-inclusive, ban on all forms of conversion therapy. We fully support the view that conversion therapy is psychologically damaging abuse.”

“We are committed to a decade of national renewal and will work with all the organisations in this room tonight so every child can feel proud and confident in who they are, to stand up for LGBT+ rights at home and abroad and to get Britain’s future back.”

The mention of children is unclear but must have a background to the full speech? LGBT Labour hasn't tweeted about it but others have. Rayner and Dodds also in attendance.

It's a real risk. You only need to watch Dodds arguing for self-ID and against UK laws and standards in Parliament this morning to see what Labour will do with this.

But, but, but weren't we told not long ago on this very thread that that would never happen and women's rights and single sex only spaces will definitely, definitely be protected nay strengthened under Labour?

GailBlancheViola · 06/02/2024 15:09

Dodds was even singled out as being one of the ones totally on board with single sex only spaces and to be trusted.

Hmm.

You've forgotten:
You're Part of the Religious Right, In Fact You're a Fascist

Has quite a catchy rhythm to it...

We're writing a pretty good libretto here! But yes we shall need somebody to come up with the melody @NoWordForFluffy 🎵

We can also add:

That Will Never Happen, No No No 🎶

I've missed this, what did she say?

The one hit wonder of yore, 2 Unlimited, may be instructive in this regard:

🎵 No no
No no no no
No no no no
No no
IT WON'T HAPPEN!!!🎵

She was very cross about the overseas GRCs that the government will now recognise because the changes mean they don't include self-ID. She was annoyed that a 5year review has been built in, having spent time being very cross that this review took too long.

Sorry not to be able to make it make sense.

No need to apologise Resister.

None of it makes sense . . .

Thanks ResisterRex, I'll have to watch it properly later but it sounds like it harks back to the exchange between Dodds and Badenoch in December, when Badenoch announced they were updating the list of countries with an approved GRC process in line with our own (e.g. removing any that used self ID)? It was something the Labour Government had previously committed to doing so there was really nothing for the opposition to object to and it would have been a really good opportunity for Dodds to reassure voters by restating Labour's opposition to self ID. But she preferred to carp and huff and grouch instead - it was a very poor performance.

PronounssheRa · 06/02/2024 17:20

Dodds completely neglects the 'women' part of her shadow brief.

Watching it now and Dodds seems annoyed that it’s taken so long for the govt to review the process AND is annoyed that the govt is reviewing the process; she’d rather they didn’t 😵‍💫

Haha I can imagine this

ResisterRex · 06/02/2024 17:36

It'll be very inconvenient if there's a Labour govt and they'd seemingly kicked the self-ID can down the road, and weren't able to claim:

"oh but look we accept all these countries so yeah, kinda looks like we have self-ID"

Or:

"Blah blah, international best practice WPATH blah blah"

Or:

"It was the Tories wot dunnit. Our hands are tied"

They'd have gotten away with it, if it weren't for that pesky Kemi.

(Thank you, Kemi!)

Her long speech boils down to her arguing that the govt are making this change with bad motives. Labour would also carry out reviews if they were the govt but their reviews would be with good motives.

Final voting results on the AIBU one won't make for happy reading over in Labour HQ. But they won't listen so there you are.

The insults from the pro Labour are flying on that thread

Glad to see the majority voting held up

EasternStandard · 06/02/2024 18:50

@lifeturnsonadime I don’t know how you do it but massive 👏 for dealing with the rubbish getting lobbed your way

NoWordForFluffy · 06/02/2024 18:53

I can't read threads like that as the attitude from the die hard Labour voters frustrates the hell out of me. They throw insults like confetti.

JanesLittleGirl · 06/02/2024 19:06

The options seem to boil down to:

  1. Vote to throw the Tories out. Their performance over the last 14 years has been so abysmal that every other issue pales into insignificance and the Labour Party might not be as anti-woman as you fear anyway.

  2. While the Tories have been absolutely abysmal for the last 14 years and there is no good reason to believe that they would be any better in the future, at the very least they won't move the dial any further against women.

I will think on this as I stand in the polling booth.

EasternStandard · 06/02/2024 19:07

Yep it’s why the vote is majority one way and insulting posts from same lot the other way override the threads. I think people just avoid

Kudos to anyone trying to explain why sex based rights are important

Deaf ears though, isn't it? Despite clearly not understanding the full implication of women losing their sex-based rights, they're very confident that they're superior in every way due to their voting choice. It reminds me of a Biffy Clyro lyric: 'You were not right, you were just righteous.' Seems apt!

christmascactus22 · 06/02/2024 19:36

Even if the posters don't respond there may be lurkers who are paying attention. I hope some of the major parties will notice this shift in societal attitudes and take action.
