Starmer: "trans-inclusive" conversion therapy ban, "modernise" the GRA, all hate crime to be aggravated offences as part of making every child "proud and confident"

Exclusive in Diva, following a reception at a LGBT+ Labour event in Parliament on 29 Jan:

https://diva-magazine.com/2024/01/29/exclusive-keir-starmer-lgbtqia-rights/

"“We’ll strengthen the law, so every category of hate crime is treated as an aggravated offence,” Starmer said. “We’ll cut NHS waiting lists for LGBT+ people waiting for urgent physical and mental health care. We’ll modernise the Gender Recognition Act. We’ll implement a full, trans-inclusive, ban on all forms of conversion therapy. We fully support the view that conversion therapy is psychologically damaging abuse.”

“We are committed to a decade of national renewal and will work with all the organisations in this room tonight so every child can feel proud and confident in who they are, to stand up for LGBT+ rights at home and abroad and to get Britain’s future back.”

The mention of children is unclear but must have a background to the full speech? LGBT Labour hasn't tweeted about it but others have. Rayner and Dodds also in attendance.

No you wouldn’t stop me posting, but all the Labour links aren’t doing much either.

If you do want to understand why it matters to women read what they write on here. There’s enough there.

You don’t need to be ‘baffled’

I understand why it matters, I'm baffled as to why it matters SO MUCH people will vote for the party that got us into this situation and has no policies to get us out, because "they know what a woman is".

Anyway. God forbid one points out people's illogical position. It makes them feel "stupid" and then it's not their fault if they cause untold damage by voting how they like, like a petulant toddler.

Vote Conservative! That'll show Labour and who cares about all the women who are raped, murdered and in poverty that we could have avoided! It's Labour's fault, not the Tories. We know what we are voting for and fuck those women. They lost, get over it!

Honestly. The world is going to hell in a handbasket due to a complete unwillingness for people to do anything other than have exactly what they want.

WaterHound · 03/02/2024 13:20

Once again - why do you assume that non Labour voters will automatically vote Conservative? Why do you refuse to listen when Left leaning women tell you this over and over?

This is Labour aligned gender phrasing

I’d never frame women’s sex based rights in such a dismissive way.

You’re baffled because you think the phrase covers the issue

I admit I skimmed the post but this stuff is bonkers

An attempt to insult but wrong

AdamRyan · 03/02/2024 12:48

OK, well I take it if I wrote the same thing using the words "woman" and "man" you wouldn't jump me with "but what does that meeeeaaan if you can't define woman?"
😴
Bear in mind I was specifically responding to a poster claiming you have to have words for the policy to make sense. I think the policies will protect women regardless of what definition people use. Implementation of a policy to convict rapists will protect women regardless of if they are called snurgles, if the definition of woman includes males or anything else.

So your point is essentially trickle down economics, repurposed for sex and gender? 'Doesn't matter if the Labour party say men can be women, their policies for women-meaning-women-and-some-men will still end up benefitting women so don't worry about the terminology'?

No Thank You.

Winnading · 03/02/2024 14:05

AdamRyan · 03/02/2024 12:51

Honestly you lot make me laugh. Its like trying to talk to a 5 year old. "Why? Why? But what does it mean? Why? I don't agree because my friend Ella told me there definitely is one of those. Why?"

Read the context of the question I was answering and consider it like a grown up, rather than knee jerking "you think women should be cervix havers! Why? Why?"

Sooooo hows that insulting us into voting labour going for you?

Your time might be better spent insulting the labour party into defining a woman in a way we are all happy to vote for them.

Put really simply as you seem unable to understand (I'm being kind here, we all know you dont want to understand)
Labour just have to define "woman" the same way we do, be certain that men of any identity do not get to join in that "woman" definition and we will all be happy.

I cant make this any simpler.

Floisme · 03/02/2024 14:09

It's funny that I have no intention of voting Tory and yet cannot remember any Conservative supporter on this board ever trying to lecture me over that. The only posters I can recall hectoring, attacking, or trying to misrepresent or discredit me have been Labour / left of centre supporters.

That in itself will not influence my vote but it sure as hell doesn't tempt me back into the fold.

TempestTost · 03/02/2024 14:18

Does anyone actually believe that the LP (or any other party) can halve domestic violence?

Promises like that just make me raise my eyebrows.

EdithStourton · 03/02/2024 14:18

Yeah, I too come onto FWR to be brow-beaten by Labour supporters....
<wanders off>

ResisterRex · 03/02/2024 14:34

Why would defining "woman" send you to sleep? Is it boring for you Adam? It's absolutely crucial to us. Either you're a man or you're so detached from real life and intensely privileged that you live in a world where this does not matter to you. If it's boring, stop hectoring us over it. Go enjoy your privileged, detached life.

Boring indeed. First we're body parts, then like small children, then our concerns send you to sleep. How insulting.

Toddlers can't vote.

Unlike your socks.

Can someone explain to me the chain of reasoning that connects:

@) seeing people question the Labour Party's definition of woman to

#) an individual poster assuming we'll question her when she uses the word woman to

$) the same poster feeling forced to use as many dehumanising neologisms as possible within one post, just to refer to women?

I didn't realise any of the posters here were anthropomorphic personifications of UK political parties.

The hectoring, berating and insults remind me of the brexit referendum, and we all know what happened there

Adam, you need to accept that people don't all think the same way as you, might vote differently from you, will have different opinions of things important to you. But that is all part of a democracy. At the moment, all I suspect you are achieving is turning people further away from Labour.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/02/2024 15:13

Yes, more cynical people than me might wonder whether certain posters are on the payroll of the Conservatives central office.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 03/02/2024 15:19

Dear FWR,

if Adam makes you vote conservative, please take a ready prepared note to the polling station and drop it in the ballot box.

Perhaps, "I voted Tory to piss off AdamRyan. If you see this note, please post it on X"?

I do, I think he's great.
He's been a top flight barrister so obviously very intelligent and able to understand detail.
He did loads to protect women and children when he was DPP.
He's done a great job turning the Labour Party around from the anti-semitic, momentum infested hot mess they were in 2019.
He's managed to align both the left and centre ends of Labour under his leadership so they all work together.

I would far rather see a prime minister with his track record and ability to lead than any of the last 3 prime ministers the conservatives have served up.

Tyntesfield · 03/02/2024 15:38

Spare us from stupid people voting how they like - how absolutely dreadful.

Hectoring, insults whatever

NoWordForFluffy · 03/02/2024 16:11

I so often get the impression that many Labour members haven't quite managed to move beyond sixth form politics.

It's a shame, as they should be the ideal party to vote for, but they're just not.

nothingcomestonothing · 03/02/2024 16:19

He's been a top flight barrister so obviously very intelligent and able to understand detail.

Well you'd think a very intelligent person would known that 0% of women have penises, but Sir Keir says 1% of them do. So either he's not as clever as he seems, or he's a liar.
