Starmer: "trans-inclusive" conversion therapy ban, "modernise" the GRA, all hate crime to be aggravated offences as part of making every child "proud and confident"

Exclusive in Diva, following a reception at a LGBT+ Labour event in Parliament on 29 Jan:

https://diva-magazine.com/2024/01/29/exclusive-keir-starmer-lgbtqia-rights/

"“We’ll strengthen the law, so every category of hate crime is treated as an aggravated offence,” Starmer said. “We’ll cut NHS waiting lists for LGBT+ people waiting for urgent physical and mental health care. We’ll modernise the Gender Recognition Act. We’ll implement a full, trans-inclusive, ban on all forms of conversion therapy. We fully support the view that conversion therapy is psychologically damaging abuse.”

“We are committed to a decade of national renewal and will work with all the organisations in this room tonight so every child can feel proud and confident in who they are, to stand up for LGBT+ rights at home and abroad and to get Britain’s future back.”

The mention of children is unclear but must have a background to the full speech? LGBT Labour hasn't tweeted about it but others have. Rayner and Dodds also in attendance.

Didn't it strike anyone at the time that once you enshrine the right in law for (some) men to be regarded as women, you're in for a whole raft of problems?

It did to a couple of people in parliament, but no one listened to them. It was only supposed to affect a tiny number of people, apparently.

EasternStandard · 01/02/2024 11:43

The more I read about it, the more I'm amazed that the GRA ever got passed. Didn't it strike anyone at the time that once you enshrine the right in law for (some) men to be regarded as women, you're in for a whole raft of problems? Eh, Annaliese? Frankly, saying how proud you are of it makes you sound a bit of a fuckwit.

Lammy was there at the time pushing for it

Maybe we can ask him twenty years later as he wheels around again to call us rights hoarding dinosaurs

I think you'll find that biotrans are the most marginalised and vulnerable™....

https://www.heterodorx.com/podcast/episode-55-biotrans-with-kikomi/

Thank you!

I was searching for something like that as I could remember I had seen similar idiocy somewhere.

I am aware that this is parody, and thus intentional, but I can distinctly recall seeing footage of a council meeting posted online where (IIRC) some sh1twit identified "as a woman who identified as a man who identified as a woman who identified etc" apparently ad infinitum. The expression s on the faces of the other council members were priceless - but not one of them dared say anything.

MrGHardy · 01/02/2024 13:44

I am so sick of hearing 'the right' is lost in a culture war for votes when the 'the left' is blatantly pushing this for votes.

DrBlackbird · 01/02/2024 14:32

Emotionalsupportviper · 30/01/2024 11:05

Can you recommend a party to me, then?

Greens and LibDems are a captured, woke, wash-out and there isn't anyone else to take Labour on. I swear to God that if the Monster Raving Looney party put up candidates, they's sound sensible in comparison and win by a landslide.

This for me.

Totally politically homeless and doubt there’s any independent running in my area. Never would I have ever ever thought I’d even remotely vote Tory in my life. But I am contemplating it for the first time. But for this damaging madness, I’d be voting Greens.

It wouldn’t have been hard to have said from the beginning, of course we’ll support you, look to provide third spaces, campaign to protect you from discrimination, but no you can’t change sex and we’re going to ensure sex-based right are also protected. What would’ve been so controversial about that? But once the genie escapes, impossible to put back.

coasting on brand recognition established by the policies of previous leaders.

The main message is "we're not the other lot".

No doubt hoping people will add the factory quoted above in their own heads

This is how Boris Johnson won his election. I spent months on MN being told he was a good prime minister because he wasn't Corbyn.

I said then, and I say now, a political party and its leader should have qualities and policies to offer beyond political bed-blocking.

If it's all about keeping the other lot out, may I offer one of my cats as a prospective prime minister? She can do the job twice as well, because she'll keep the Tories and Labour out at the same time!

Please don't vote Tory because of this single (extremely important) issue. I know it affects over 50% of us detrimentally, but Tory policy affects even more of us detrimentally - all but the very wealthy.

Tell Labour to sort itself out, then. It's their choice. They can only change themselves, & only they can change themselves.

If Labour makes itself unpopular, you can't just tell people they shouldn't mind & should vote for them anyway. If nobody wants what Labour are offering, it's Labour's fault for not laying out a better offer.

Eh? The only people going on about trans issues are the Tories. Just watch Sunaks conference speech (and various others).

You are funny Grin

lol at Starmer not being neck deep in gender stuff

All this stuff linked is scotch mist I take it

Vote Green anyway, the Tories have no concrete plan to do anything and Greens won't get in so no risk of their TWAW nonsense being enacted?
Unless you genuinely would rather have another 5 years of the absolute shit show we are currently in, in which case knock yourself out and vote tory. At least then when women continue to be pushed into poverty, not be able to get justice when they are raped etc we can say "I made it so we can say those woman definitely don't have penises"

WaterHound · 01/02/2024 16:37

Again dictating to intelligent women how they should vote to get the result YOU want.

It's one thing not to RTFT, quite another not to RTOP before posting.

AdamRyan · 01/02/2024 16:45

Ha! I see your clever trap! Only "vote tory, at least they know what a woman is" is the acceptable answer!

I'm an intelligent woman. Why do you get to dictate to me that there's only one answer to PPs question?

We wouldn’t even be here discussing it without the GRA

Only half the media are not TRA / pro men

It’s pretty easy to follow it back to who created this mess

Froodwithatowel · 01/02/2024 16:50

If the left are determined to abandon child safeguarding, women's rights, cultural and religious tolerance yada yada to the right, then its no good then stamping their feet and shouting 'you're smelly' when people vote right.

People are voting for the policies and the values. Not the tribal team. Particularly one that is relying on the marketing and memory of decades long ago but has in fact abandoned the policies and values that built that fan base.

It's a report about a speech he gave at ab LGBT+ Labour event.
Do you think he shouldn't attend those events? Or he should go and tell attendees why they are wrong?

What would you expect Sunak to do at an LGBT+ Conservatives event? He got the support of the first UK trans MP, Jamie Wallis, in the leadership contest. Do you think he got that by telling Wallis "a man is a man and a woman is a woman" as he did in his conference speech?

Well, quite. No-one believes these days it's the Boss Class Party v the Workers Party. If it ever was. Nowadays they're both Boss Class parties. Scrabbling for the votes of the upwardly-mobile.

[that was to Frood]

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 01/02/2024 16:55

I've been told Labour will win anyway, so why do the six women and our socks on FWR need to abase ourselves by voting Labour?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/02/2024 16:57

Because its like Brexit, voting as a protest might result in the Tories unexpectedly winning and voters regretting their actions when we get another 5 years of them.

Only vote Tory if you want a Tory government. I don't care how anyone votes, but I do care about the consequences for women if people are voting on the basis of misinformation.

EasternStandard · 01/02/2024 17:00

Labour have shown their take on gender

We are informed enough to make our own decisions

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 01/02/2024 17:02

There are six of us, all in separate constituencies, and our socks can't vote.

There aren't enough of us to influence an election!

AdamRyan · 01/02/2024 17:03

Had quite enough of experts, eh eastern? If the Tories are a disaster, it'll be Labour's fault for treating the voters like they are stupid.

I'm voting Tory. At least they know what a woman is. Much better than voting for a party with a plan to half violence against women and girls. Because some of those women might have penises so the plan is meaningless.
