Jameela Jamil on Woman's Hour (today 17/1) Reverse ferret ahoy?

I'm not here much lately and have removed myself entirely from Twitter/X so I'm not sure if I've missed something, but JJ was a guest on WH this morning - Emma Barnett interviewing - and the subject was JJ's 'new strategy for how she communicates on social media'.

She came across as moderate and reasonable, and confessed to posting aggressively, using controversy as media currency, being judgemental and condescending and jumping on the bandwagon of 'smackdown culture' ('popular on the left') and getting involved in issues that weren't her area of expertise. Also to deleting her twitter history. Notably, LGBTQ issues weren't specifically mentioned at all, but I wondered if she was on some sort of reputation salvaging mission now the Emperor's nakedness is getting harder to ignore (and his pink leggings have had a lot of front page PR.) She did claim to be using her platform to 'tell the truth', and EB pointed out that it was only her version of the truth, but that was about the closest they got to touching on issues. She is calling for greater tolerance for people admitting they were wrong.

Did anyone else hear it? Have I missed anything and am I being naive and overly optimistic to think she may have (ahem) 'educated herself'? (Probably if I returned to twitter I could get some answers myself, but I've deleted my account now and I don't think I can get back in!)

I don't suppose Emma Barnett had anything to do with that tweet. I bet the twenty something intern who does the social media for WH just luffs JJ.

Emma Barnett is a proper journalist and in the actual interview you can hear her bullshit detector go off as she pins JJ down on exactly where and when this happened.

Thank you WhereYouLeftIt for your transcript of the bit about opinions and identity which had also rather passed me by. Good point.

Wetandhorrible · 18/01/2024 09:44

I agree with golden bridges, especially if that's how reality gets recognised universally again...but some of the people crossing will have been so absolutely unhinged and horrible that it can take a moment of calm to swallow that

I haven't listened (don't intend to) and didn't know she was on until I saw a WH tweet about how she'd been pelted with rosary beads outside an abortion clinic and I was not one bit surprised to find that this unlikely drama had 'happened' to her.

Graphic that I think of every time a JJ story is mentioned.

I don’t have a clue who JJ is, but do think there’s some merit in the idea of deleting past social media posts.

We all grow and change, perhaps we are giving others too much power to be able to access what we thought, for a moment, ten years ago?

Depressedhusbandbringingmedown · 18/01/2024 23:10

My god my bullshit alarm was like a siren in that interview. Emma was absolutely brilliant with her. The racist rosary bead thrower 🤔!

She lies so much you could hear her changing her story as she was speaking, it reminded me so much of Amber Heard when she was insisting that the word pledge and donate were synonymous and the barrister was having none of it.

Emma Barnett rather cleverly needled her on particular points, then left JJ to do her own PR for the rest.

It’s as though JJ wants to have had direct personal experience of anorexia, near death, being queer, cancer, chronic illness, abortion. She wants to be a walking Venn diagram of the hot topics of the day. She must be exhausting to know. Like a child who wants to be the centre of attention at all times.

It did make me chuckle when Mark Ronson publicly called her out on the lie about the killer bees!

popebishop · 18/01/2024 23:21

Interesting to ctrl+f 'trans' and see which post in this thread is the first to mention the word.

While everyone else is more interested in talking about the amazing bee escapade...

HoneyButterPopcorn · 19/01/2024 09:07

And mention of her non bino status, killer bees or loads of girls at her school being given puberty blockers for period pains?

the woman is just a windsock.

She once uploaded a collection of comical images of athletes (some were inadvertent optical illusions, some photoshopped) being very small and very tall, as part of an argument for males in women's sports.

And, I believe, some 'far away'.

WinterTrees · 19/01/2024 11:29

WH have posted the clip of the rosary bead story on their Instagram. Somehow the visual just makes the bullshit alarm louder.

I was at primary school with a girl who used to lie compulsively. The things she said (father being an airline pilot when he picked her up from school in a battered van with a company name on it for example) were so obviously not true that it was uncomfortable for everyone. Including her, because it seemed to be just that - a compulsion she couldn't control.

The very casual way JJ told that rosary bead story reminded me of that girl. It's like there's a compulsion to centre herself in any story but a simultaneous attempt to minimise and distance herself from it. 'That happened to me!' but also 'Don't go on about it, it wasn't that big a deal' which is maybe due to subconscious guilt about appropriating the narrative.

It's very curious, to put it politely.

I listened to this and warmed to Jameela. Although the rosary bead thing...eeek...Emma B sounded incredulous in her follow up questions.

slore · 19/01/2024 14:10

I was going to give her the benefit of the doubt and say she means well, maybe she's had some personal growth - then I was reminded of her pathological lying.

So I doubt there is any wholesome reason for this: she's likely just trying to improve her reputation because she can see she's become synonymous with woke lunacy. But having been on the receiving end of such outrage herself, she can't rely on the woke left being her cheerleaders any more. So she's trying to appeal to a more moderate position and distance herself from total batshit wokery.

When you make shit up you weaken the very real arguments women have for not wanting people hassling them or protesting at abortion clinics.

The Dreams? Reality? diagram might be useful too.

ahjeez · 19/01/2024 19:05

It strikes me as odd that someone would dismantle and throw rosary beads at someone, considering the significance they have. Would be a little like tearing pages out of a bible, scrunching them up and throwing them at someone.

But, who knows, it could have happened.

HearTheSubGoBoom · 19/01/2024 19:15

Personally I think throwing rosary beads is just basic when you can train a swarm of bees instead.

DogsAkimbo · 20/01/2024 07:10

HearTheSubGoBoom · 17/01/2024 11:28

Are we talking the same person who was chased by bees, twice, and got run over, twice, and had cancer, twice? I'm not sure she's the most honest witness as she can't even keep her own story straight.

I think in this interview, she actually referred to being pelted by rosary beads when she went to get an abortion. I almost expected to hear her say she was chased by angry bees.

Ha, just saw you beat me to it!

pronounsbundlebundle · 20/01/2024 08:10

Maybe they were bees that identified as rosary beads. Apparently you literally can't tell the difference. Or at least JJ can't.

DogsAkimbo · 20/01/2024 08:17

They were rosary bees.

😝

Redcar78 · 20/01/2024 08:52

Does anyone know why she was carried into the abortion clinic and didn't walk?

WandaWomblesaurus · 20/01/2024 09:04

Maybe she should shut her mouth and open her purse which is what she said to a female survivor of domestic abuse.

Jameela is a clown.

ArabellaScott · 20/01/2024 09:07

Ye gods, I'd forgotten that, Wanda. Fucking abhorrent thing to say.

NotBadConsidering · 20/01/2024 09:21

I would like to see Jameela Jamil and Jack Munroe on a special episode of Would I lie to you? It would just keep escalating until one of them imploded under the mass of black hole- sized inconsistencies.
