Jameela Jamil on Woman's Hour (today 17/1) Reverse ferret ahoy?

I'm not here much lately and have removed myself entirely from Twitter/X so I'm not sure if I've missed something, but JJ was a guest on WH this morning - Emma Barnett interviewing - and the subject was JJ's 'new strategy for how she communicates on social media'.

She came across as moderate and reasonable, and confessed to posting aggressively, using controversy as media currency, being judgemental and condescending and jumping on the bandwagon of 'smackdown culture' ('popular on the left') and getting involved in issues that weren't her area of expertise. Also to deleting her twitter history. Notably, LGBTQ issues weren't specifically mentioned at all, but I wondered if she was on some sort of reputation salvaging mission now the Emperor's nakedness is getting harder to ignore (and his pink leggings have had a lot of front page PR.) She did claim to be using her platform to 'tell the truth', and EB pointed out that it was only her version of the truth, but that was about the closest they got to touching on issues. She is calling for greater tolerance for people admitting they were wrong.

Did anyone else hear it? Have I missed anything and am I being naive and overly optimistic to think she may have (ahem) 'educated herself'? (Probably if I returned to twitter I could get some answers myself, but I've deleted my account now and I don't think I can get back in!)

Does anyone know why she was carried into the abortion clinic and didn't walk?

She didn't explain. She used 'he' to refer to her friend so I tentatively assume he was a man and therefore more up to the carrying task than most women. She was at pains to point out to Emma she's 5'10 (thus being able to 'handle' being pelted with rosary beads) so presumably no featherweight. She's written previously she was about 8 weeks pregnant at the time of the visit.

It's a mystery.

When you make shit up you weaken the very real arguments women have for not wanting people hassling them or protesting at abortion clinics.

I'm loving EB's face at the start of that clip!

Lottapianos · 20/01/2024 12:53

'I'm loving EB's face at the start of that clip!'

😁 She looks like she's thinking 'course you were dear!'

They were rosary bees.

Classic 😂 😂.

Perhaps they were sent by St Gobnait. She sent a swarm of bees to see off brigands attacking her Abbey. Apparently.

Presumably, swarms of Rosary Bees would have a distinctive crucifix shape at one end!

Grin I think they’re also black-and-white, instead of black and yellow. Little angry flying nuns.

Whether it's bees or beads, it's a very vivid image isn't it, the victim's soft vulnerable body pelted or pursued by small dark stinging objects. There's something ancient and visceral about it. Like stoning. It reminds me of black and white prints of medieval torture and Biblical scenes in old books.
JJ can certainly paint a picture.

I don't think anyone should be hassled outside abortion clinics. If they could put an exclusion zone around Oxford university to keep the animal rights protesters away from the laboratories where they do animal testing, (and those protesters ending up in our village next to the traffic lights opposite Sainsbury's on a Saturday morning,) then surely they can do the same for abortion clinics?
Women have abortions for all sorts of reasons, some of which make them feel very vulnerable. I can't imagine how awful it would be to have to face a gaggle of anti-abortion protesters when you've suffered rape, or knowing your baby isn't going to survive after it's born, or just finding yourself unexpectedly pregnant and knowing you wouldn't be able to cope with a baby.

i don’t agree with lots of Jameela’s output, but I do think most of it comes from a good place/a view to help
this thread is really horrible, and I don’t really get the point of it?
do people have to be perfect to put their view “out there”?
do you have to agree with everything a person says to think that one point they made is important?

I think her exercise initiative to get people moving and divorcing it from weight loss is awesome and should be applauded.

I'm not convinced it does come from a good place when it's dishonest though. To me, she's a self promoter and bandwagon jumper not someone out to do good for the sake of doing good.

If the "good place" is 'making Jameela Jamil look relevant and virtuous, whether the statement is true or not' you're probably right.

But that's not the definition most people work with.

Making Sense of the Dizzyingly Complicated Jameela Jamil Controversy

Scrutiny over the actress’ medical history has pitted skeptics of her public persona against disability rights activists.

Absolutely. And that reminds me I haven't checked on the exclusion zone bill currently making a very slow way through Scotparl.

NotBadConsidering · 21/01/2024 10:36

The Good Place ended up being the bad place. Fitting, really.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 21/01/2024 10:39

I didn’t know who she was but found her character incredibly irritating. I assumed it was an American actress pretending to be English. She was that irritating.

She wasn't even an actress before TGP and she lied about having acting experience. There are so many lies and contradictions in the extraordinary story of her life. She's either one of life's most unfortunate people, having experienced so many health conditions, mishaps and traumas as well as one of life's luckiest people having been given opportunities beyond most people's experience, or she's a bullshitter.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 21/01/2024 11:41

Wonder how her pal Danielle is doing (was that his name?). She certainly has friends in low places.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 21/01/2024 12:16

I think this is JJs attempt to be on the right side of history. She is the epitome of eleveneriffe when it comes to life experiences (abortion, eating disorder, cancer, chased by bees, she's allegedly had them all) so if her latest spouting will open the eyes of her equally vacuous followers to the fact that they've all been duped with gender nonsense, then for once I'd say let her spout on.

Abhannmor · 21/01/2024 12:48

Perhaps there are Catholic and Protestant bees like Rangers and Celtic? And they get pissed up on Buckfast and have a scrap. If Jameela was wearing orange she loses woke points. Culturally insensitive.

ArabellaScott · 21/01/2024 12:57

Sectarian bees? Is that actually incense the beekeepers are wafting about?

I kid you not, there is a strain of bees called "Buckfast" bees - bred by brother Adam, who was in charge of beekeeping at Buckfast Abbey from 1919. There is a Buckfast bee breeding programme- I have no idea how ecumenical it is 😂. So yes, there are Catholic bees - perhaps they've been trained to identify as rosary beads and attack on command 🤷🏼‍♀️

ArabellaScott · 21/01/2024 13:58

Holy blooming moly!

This is amazing, and has made JJ's daftness worthwhile.

https://hbrc.ca/buckfast-breeding/

'In addition, the bees are bred for calmness, low tendency to swarm, gentle behaviour and high honey production.'

Edited

It is pretty amazing- I used to keep bees, but only using natural beekeeping methods, very little intervention.each hive had its own personality, one might be a bit manic, work work work... while the one next to it was all "yeah, whatever bro" 😎. Mine were all very friendly and I rarely had to use the protective clothing around them.

ArabellaScott · 21/01/2024 14:32

Wow! 😍

Graphic that I think of every time a JJ story is mentioned.

Oh, that's very good! I'm giggling away like an idiot now!
