I suspect kemi and I would disagree on a fair amount, but she is a rare thing amongst our current politicians, she knows her brief and is brave enough to do her own research.

I am of the same mind.

At 16.59.00 in the recording and following - did I misunderstand what was said?

Kemi Badenoch reacts strongly to Kate Osborne claiming that Badenoch had used the word 'disease' to describe transgender people.

After the meeting Kate Osbourne takes to xTwitter to post half of the dictionary definition of the word 'epidemic' as if this was the word that Badenoch was objecting to.

Kate Osborne MP | Facebook

It does seem ill-judged, especially as the actual exchange is part of the public record.

Kate Osborne said that Kemi Badenoch referring to an epidemic of young people identifying as trans means she was likening the phenomenon to a disease because epidemic = disease.

OK Kate:

Thick as a plank.

There's plenty more where that came from:

She's making herself look an absolute idiot isn't she?

nauticant · 13/12/2023 23:06

There is some estrangement between Kate Osborne and the truth:

I’m watching the hearing now and have got to the part where Kemi points out one of the MPs is lying about her.

I’m so glad to see Kemi speaking plainly and factually about these issues (and that she’s standing up for herself and the Cass Review). I agree with Kemi, MPs are concerned altogether too much with emotions rather than facts.

And Noakes is being her usual smug, sneering, failing-to-gotcha self.

A better committee would get better results. This group of MPs are not capable of discussing these issues factually, without emotive speechifying. They’re ignoring that protected characteristics of all groups must be balanced and that one set of legal protections doesn’t automatically override those of other groups.

SinnerBoy · 13/12/2023 23:16

Oh bless her, she doesn't want her hypocrisy pointed out to her!

AuContraire · 13/12/2023 23:17

Mortified on KO's behalf.

Kemi is so impressive, knows her brief and articulates herself well. Future Tory leader, I hope.

I wish her politics were a bit more to the left.

UtopiaPlanitia · 13/12/2023 23:20

Noakes seems to think she’s catching Badenoch out in her testimony by asking for data. Being told by Badenoch that some data is protected whistleblower testimony sees Noakes describing that (sneeringly) as anecdote. Seriously, some of the members of this committee are not up to the job.

FriedGold32 · 13/12/2023 23:54

I'm glad I'm over the river from Osborne, I couldn't vote for her, she's completely barmy.

DarkDayforMN · 14/12/2023 00:00

nauticant · 13/12/2023 23:11

She also said there were more predators than trans people. An absolute disgrace.

Gosh. There are more squirrels than trans people, am I now a disgrace too?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 14/12/2023 00:00

What a good listen. Kemi is articulate & clear. Loved her responses to the dim Kate Osborne - speaking like a teenager who's not done their homework & unable to ask a single coherent question.

Enjoyed Kemi reminding Noakes that she voted against same sex marriage. I listened right to the end and there were some fascinating discussions.

UtopiaPlanitia · 14/12/2023 00:35

The committee members are asking Badenoch about issues over which she has no authority or remit. At this point, I’m surprised they’re not giving her grief over why the local Council isn’t emptying the bins more often and why she’s not doing anything about it 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ And of course Noakes would want data 😬🙃

Datun · 14/12/2023 00:47

Kemi ran rings around Kate Osborne. Riveting stuff!!

Kate repeatedly asking that given it's not statutory guidance, then schools won't be breaking the law by not following it, will they? And Kemi immediately confronting her with are you suggesting that schools are going to ignore the guidance?

And then followed it up with it will definitely be in the context of a legal framework. I bet it fucking will, after that massive heads up from Kate Osborne. What a fool.

And all the usual TRA nonsense. A rise in trans hate crime because of inflammatory words that people like Kemi are saying. (when it's my understanding that even the police said it's more likely that it's being reported more often, rather than actual incidents are increasing). Kemi responding with we can't put up with people saying they feel unsafe when we are trying to formulate policy, here.

Then not letting cowboys do RSHE lessons is like section 28. Kemi asking her to clarify that rigorous scrutiny of RSHE lessons is like section 28?

You shouldn't be outing children at school to their parents. Kemi saying that you cannot start with the premise that teachers love the children more than the parents. It's wrong.

And yes, you're lying, that's not true, I didn't say that. High drama.

Kemi being articulate, blunt and adult is brilliant, but her being absolutely fucking incandescent with rage is spectacular.

Quite unbelievably infantile on the part of Kate Osborne. Aided and abetted by the insufferably smug head girl Caroline Noakes. I bet she hated Kemi pointing out that she voted against gay marriage. That's her woke cred straight down the privy.

Highly entertaining though that was, I can honestly say, after that display, I absolutely think Kemi gets it. All of it. And she will try her best to push through as much as she can.

I hope we see more of this sort of public debate, though. Yet again it just shows transactivism up for the empty, damaging, incoherent nonsense it is.

Yes, they did it over and over. She kept saying I haven't got anything to do with that.

I was saying it before she did. That's not her remit, I may have yelled at the screen

HagoftheNorth · 14/12/2023 01:04

You would think committee members would want to make the most of the opportunity to question the minister over her actual work wouldnt you? Why isn’t Kemi busy in the home office/foreign office/MoJ making sure they follow the equalities law….. maybe the idea is to try to distract her from the very valuable work she is doing - or maybe there is no idea and the kids didn’t do their homework, and made up the questions 5 minutes before the meeting started?
Lady in the green jacket was a bit more on point (I assume a Tory colleague given the friendlier discussion) who was she?

RandySavage · 14/12/2023 01:46

I've never written to an MP before, but I wrote to Kemi Badenoch today to tell her how well she did.

I'm supporting a tory MP over a Labour MP - never thought that would happen.

AvacadoFieldsForever · 14/12/2023 02:56

The irony of wanting data! There’s no data on detransitioning. There’s no descriptions for these new words. There’s no data collected by these clinics. Theres no science to ‘I identify as’.

JustSpeculation · 14/12/2023 07:21

KB lost her temper which shows a slight lack of self control. Understandable, but I wish she hadn't.

Which bits are too right? Asking as a floating middle person.
I’m in an odd place politically and could do with understanding better!
