James Esses - UKCP settles

ArthurbellaScott · 11/12/2023 13:39

From Esses' crowdfunder:

'I am pleased to announce a very positive update. I have agreed a settlement with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) in my claim against them.
Although I am not in a position to reveal the terms of settlement, I can say that I am extremely happy with them.
UKCP have also published a formal statement, which reads as follows:
'UKCP recognises that gender-critical beliefs (that sex is both binary and immutable) are protected under the Equality Act 2010. UKCP also recognises the validity of the professional belief that children suffering from gender dysphoria should be treated with explorative therapy, rather than being affirmed towards irreversible and potentially damaging medical intervention. Psychotherapists and counsellors accredited by UKCP are fully entitled to hold such beliefs and any discrimination against them on this basis, including by UKCP-accredited training organisations, is unlawful.’
^^
This is an extremely important statement, which I hope will ensure that what happened to me will never happen to another trainee therapist. It sends a clear message to therapeutic training course providers that if they discriminate against their students for believing in biological reality or child safeguarding, they will be held accountable.
With that in mind, although my case against UKCP has concluded, I will be continuing my litigation against the Metanoia Institute for expelling me from my Masters’ degree after I spoke out about concerns regarding gender ideology and child safeguarding.'

Good for him!

happydappy2 · 11/12/2023 13:43

Congratulations-madness this ever happened. Thank you for continuing to persue Metanoia

Rightsraptor · 11/12/2023 13:46

Excellent. Well done James. Keep at 'em.

howard97A · 11/12/2023 13:46

A great result! Well done. Thanks for taking a stand.

heldinadream · 11/12/2023 13:51

As a retired psychotherapist who was accredited by UKCP long before all of this debacle, I am massively delighted with this. Thank you for taking on what must have been and will doubtless continue to be a very difficult and energy consuming battle.

So delighted for James, and for people like you. It's an awfully difficult path to go down, with as you say such energy required. But he has done it for him, for you, and for the children who would otherwise be damaged.

fedupandstuck · 11/12/2023 14:13

That's a brilliant outcome and a very clear statement. I hope James's further legal action is just as successful.

WatchingBoat · 11/12/2023 14:15

That statement is worth its weight. Really important.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 11/12/2023 14:17

Great statement. Wonderful news.

Imnobody4 · 11/12/2023 14:25

Getting that statement is a real achievement. All credit to James.

ace249 · 11/12/2023 14:29

when will the BACP catch up? UKCP has generally got psychotherapists with Masters and higher qualifications on their books,
so BACP need to listen up and have a radical change of policy.

This is HUGE.

When Maya Forstater sought to have GC belief protected under the EA2010, I couldn't understand why she didn't just point out 'it's material reality'; but all the cases since then have been able to use that. It was very farsighted of Maya & team to take that line.

The reverberations of Maya's win are still rippling and will continue to do so, I think. They've caused a sea change in how women are being treated.

I don't mean to get soppy but she is going down in history for that court case.

It's given women the foothold they needed to be able to argue back. It was the end of 'No Debate'. It enshrines 'gc' beliefs in law and lays out clearly what they mean - that sex is immutable and dichotomous - and it also reveals what the alternative beliefs are by implication.

Mazing woman. And her legal team. We owe them so much.

Fuuuuuck 😮

As in, I might faint with relief.

These cases are so important and so significant. Great result. (Not great that he was pushed out of work, but compensation has been granted at least).

You can see so clearly how the Maya case, her strength and determination, has been so instrumental for everyone out there, in all professions and personal situations, who are standing up against gender ideology.

Given that this thread is about a man, I suppose also worth noting it's given everyone the foothold they needed.

Well this is great news. I hope it will make it easier for therapists to practise in accordance with material reality without fear of losing their livelihoods.

Redshoeblueshoe · 11/12/2023 15:01

Brilliant news

pronounsbundlebundle · 11/12/2023 15:01

Fantastic news, well done James.

Therapists promoting only one solution to mentally disturbed children is one of the biggest scandals there is in all this. There are some women who've had experience of that on here with their children. It's been an absolutely shocking abdication of professional ethics.

Hopefully this will be the start of a pushback where children will get mental health support again, not indoctrination.

One thing about Maya's win being about 'beliefs' is that when the average man and woman on the street hears statements such as 'we recognise the belief in binary biological sex is protected in law' they sometimes wake up and say 'what the what now - belief? It's just bloody fact - how do they think babies are made?' and thus begins the peaking journey.

Not only is it belief, it's also fact.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 11/12/2023 15:06

Such good news. The capture of the therapeutic community by trans extremism has been so dangerous for children and the vulnerable.

Well done James.

RoyalCorgi · 11/12/2023 15:08

It's such a shame he can't say how much the settlement was. That might instil a bit of fear into other organisations that think they can sack or discipline people for wrongthink.

RaininginDarling · 11/12/2023 15:24

Bravo, James! 👏👏👏

Thank you for pushing at this institutional corruption. I really hope it now forces the BACP's hand

Igmum · 11/12/2023 15:47

Bloody brilliant. Can't say how happy I am about this. Now please please let's see the end of affirmative therapy forcing vulnerable young people down the route of sterilisation and let's get back to proper, supportive counselling that gives them healthy options (I sound like I'm checking their diets...)

SoundTheSirens · 11/12/2023 15:58

Brilliant news. And YY to what an absolute trailblazing shero Maya has proven to be.
