Its so cynical and infuriating. Rosie has been one of the strongest voices in Labour against antisemitism, again, showing her willingness to go against the tide and stand up for her principles and to protect others.

ArthurbellaScott · 26/11/2023 07:34

They've made their choice, then

Eddie Izzard over Rosie Duffield.

It couldn't be any clearer.

ArthurbellaScott · 26/11/2023 07:36

'The MP for Canterbury, who has previously claimed she has been ostracised by Sir Keir Starmer and the party for her beliefs about women’s rights, is currently not on the party’s approved list of candidates to stand at the next general election.'

BadSkiingMum · 26/11/2023 07:40

As far as I’m aware there have been no complaints about Rosie Duffield’s performance in the House of Commons or her ability to represent her constituents.

How did we arrive at the point where social media activity was deemed more important than an MP’s conduct in Parliament or their constituency?

I would advise any female MP to come off Twitter as it just doesn’t seem worth it.

ArthurbellaScott · 26/11/2023 07:44

It's not Twitter that's the problem. It's been a concerted campaign, a witch hunt, and Labour failing to stand up for her.

NovemberAutumn · 26/11/2023 07:53

FFS. I a Jewish and have been horrified and devastated by the level of antisemitism at every level of society in the past 6 weeks but that was not antisemitism. Everyone who knows anything about history knows that the Nazis murdered people who were gay, Romany people, Catholics etc as well as Jewish people. Izzard was claiming victim hood by being a man who wears women’s clothing, not as somehow being Jewish. It makes me wonder just how fucking thick some people are to claim it is antisemitism.

ArthurbellaScott · 26/11/2023 08:00

Oh, they don't care about anti semitism. They're just using anything they can twist to try and shut her up.

It might be useful to publically have the discussion of why it's offensive for Eddie Izzard to make the claims he does.

lordloveadog · 26/11/2023 08:01

Right, well that answers the question of whether I'll vote for them.

Chrysanthemum5 · 26/11/2023 08:04

So they are slow to deal with actual anti-semitism but very quick to investigate this. Labour really doesn't like Rosie Duffield who is (by all accounts) a good local MP.

Rightsraptor · 26/11/2023 08:05

So this started back in March of this year and only now are we hearing about it.

Call me cynical, but I have a tiny suspicion that the timing is due to the current wave of antisemitism infesting our society. They see it as the perfect time to add to the campaign to oust Rosie Duffield.

FantasticElasticBand · 26/11/2023 08:12

Would it be worth RD standing as an independent at the next gen election?

Does Canterbury support Labour or RD?

NecessaryScene · 26/11/2023 08:17

Whereas if she'd said what Izzard had said, they'd be using that against her in a similar way.

The working definition of "antisemitism" in some circles seems to be "someone in an outgroup we oppose talking about Nazis or reacting to us talking about Nazis (which we do a lot)".

KitchenDancefloor · 26/11/2023 08:27

FantasticElasticBand · 26/11/2023 08:12

Canterbury is historically very, very conservative. Rosie is the only Labour MP in constituency history. If the next election is in university vacation time, it will likely be a Tory win. She wouldn't have a hope as an independent, unfortunately.

PriOn1 · 26/11/2023 08:27

The witch hunt continues then. I’m disappointed (again) in Starmer that he is allowing this to happen.

The irony in the accusations of historical revisionism, given they are falsely claiming that cross dressing men and transvestites were targeted by the Nazis, is utterly sickening and completely self-serving. I don’t understand what Izzard has become. I used to think he was intelligent, but I guess even intelligent men can get caught up in addictive and/or cult-like behaviour, particularly around their sexual proclivities.

Maybe she should join the
SDPs

W#nkers!!!

EasternStandard · 26/11/2023 08:40

LGBT Labour seem to have a lot of sway

It, and unions which are generally captured, seem to be some of main causes for Labour’s allegiance to gender issues

SomeCatFromJapan · 26/11/2023 08:41

Oh well, so much for it's okay to vote Labour because they have MPs like Duffield.

It also tells me they don't genuinely take anti-Semitism seriously.

Abhannmor · 26/11/2023 08:47

This is true @NecessaryScene . British people are never done talking about Nazi Germany so it is a ' target rich environment '. In Brexit , the Triumph of Failure , Fintan O Toole remarks that Britain doesn't seem to have got past WW2 , although it is the only participant which wasn't invaded.

And , bizzarely , as the war recedes out of living memory this obsession seems to be increasing. Time was you could describe the referee who awarded a penalty against your team as ' a little Hitler' without being suspended from the Labour Party !

nauticant · 26/11/2023 09:00

It's well-known that the Nazis had views on crossdressing:

Yes.

And since I'm not up for them running the country, they - and the Greens and SNP and the LibDems - are all people I wouldn't trust with the school Christmas fair, never mind the country.

Absolute bloody muppets.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 26/11/2023 09:24

I saw that tweet at the time retweeted with the ridiculous assertion that GL was siding with the Nazis rather than puncturing EI's self importnance.

I don't like or post on Twitter as I want to avoid being blocked by people whose tweets I think it's important I can see, so I'm glad this thread gives me the chance to make the point I would have made now...

Eddie Izzard is more than happy to swap back to Boy Mode when it comes to lucrative acting parts - do we really believe he'd have stuck in Girl Mode when the Nazis came looking?

Grimchmas · 26/11/2023 09:38

FWIW I suspect Eddie would have been sent to the gas chambers for being (suspected of being) gay. He wouldn't have been stupid enough to cross dress when things started looking dangerous in Nazi Germany.
