Thanks Arabella. The Harry the Owl episode was scary. Just a retweet of an unfunny limerick was seen as worthy of police action. And for those who remember back to 2018, the Linda Bellos/Venice Allen case, where TRAs launched a private prosecution based on a YouTube video of a talk in York and then made a fuss because Linda was wearing suffragette colours. (It is the incident that convinced me that something was going seriously wrong and we needed to be pro-active. At the time Richard Littlejohn, the DMs unapologetically right wing columnist, wrote a great article confirming that he disagreed with Bellos on just about everything, but defended her right to hold her views.)

The thing is that back then most of us were sleeping. Someone, presumably Stonewall, had sold Theresa May the TRA agenda and she had agreed to pursue self-ID. No protests from Labour, the LibDems or the Greens, and the first brave MP to stick his head above the parapet David TC Davies, got real abuse. Yes the Tories should have known. But so should the rest of us. I do not think for a minute that, on this issue at least, things would have been better under Labour. The consultation on Self-ID showed up women's concerns, and things have shifted. Recruiting Cass was a masterstroke as it provided an evidence based on which to push back on medicalising children. And in recent weeks Labour have indicated that there is a problem with their approach. Even the SNP if Yousaf's recent defense of FiLia indicates anything.

The questions should not be "Where were you in 2017" but "Are you brave enough to acknowledge what women have been saying and be clear about future policy". The issue at the next election will be getting voters out. After 13 years even people who lean towards the Tories are seen as wanting a change, whilst Starmer, though saying some of the right things, is still prevaricating so people don't know what he really plans and don't trust him. 60% of voters remain undecided. The fact that this issue is one where people do not see clarity is a problem of Labour's own making.

History of the Bill and voting record here shows that Labour and SNP voted for it, Tories and some independents voted against.

I count two Labour MPs who voted against: Smith, Elaine (Central Scotland) (Lab), Marra, Jenny (North East Scotland) (Lab), and one Labour abstention.

For 82, Against 32, Abstentions 4.

Labour in Scotland in the last couple of years have supported both Self ID laws (which they Whipped MSPs to vote for) and repressive Hate Crime legislation. They are trying to do the same in Wales where they are in power and have been pushing gender ideology hard. They are already neck deep in removing women’s rights and free speech. The gaslighting on here is something to behold.

ArabellaScott · 16/10/2023 11:09

This had been and remains very much a cross party issue.

It's quite infuriating that anyone is trying to claim it's one party or the other.

All parties fell for the bullshit. None seem willing to dig us out of it.

They'll need to work harder at it. Women here are pretty good at spotting it by now.

I was particularly amused at the idea that criticism of a policy should be dismissed if it came from another political party.

ArabellaScott · 16/10/2023 11:33

One more point on Scotland's Hate Crime Bill.

Guess which flag Victim Support is flying? Just to ensure women are very clear on which groups are running the show.

Yes! This so clear eyed and right. And it needs addressing so that this "policy as law" tactic never happens again. The wider issue is the quality of politicians who actually fell for this stuff.

ArabellaScott · 16/10/2023 11:34

I'm going to guess they're never going to fly a flag for disability rights, or womens' rights, or any particular religion. Just the progress pride flag.

bombastix · 16/10/2023 11:35

I don't want public authorities to be flying this flag. The symbolism is extreme.

User1437957 · 16/10/2023 11:39

Well we will definitely be voting for anyone other that these clowns. No to labour even if I have to choke over my own vomit and vote the tories

This was mine from another thread:

My Labour bullshit bingo card includes the following (more entries welcome):

  • I know a GC woman & she LOVES Keir Starmer & is telling everyone to vote Labour
  • most of the public aren't GC
  • it doesn't come up on the doorsteps
  • it's a side issue
  • I'm too clever & sophisticated to base my vote on a single issue
  • everything else is more important
  • you must be soooo privileged/entitled if you care about women
  • first world problems
  • it's 0.05% of the population
  • why do you care?
  • you should be ashamed of yourself
  • OH YOU WANT CHILDREN TO STARVE, DO YOU???
  • it's all the Tories' fault
  • the only important thing is to get the Tories out, don't worry about what happens next
  • if you disagree with Labour you must be a rabid Tory
  • I've/Keir has/Labour have been very clear about this
  • Boris Johnson
ArabellaScott · 16/10/2023 13:49

That's really good, ifIwerenot, but mine is in Comic Sans.

EasternStandard · 16/10/2023 13:53

Haha at both those posts

ResisterRex · 16/10/2023 14:00

Great posts. If I may, I'd go with "shitty sex fudge" as IIRC that's the technical term Grin

ArabellaScott · 16/10/2023 14:08

You are very welcome to the shitty sex fudge Resister. I'll pass. 😂

ResisterRex · 16/10/2023 14:12
