Thanks Arabella. The Harry the Owl episode was scary. Just a retweet of an unfunny limerick was seen as worthy of police action. And for those who remember back to 2018, the Linda Bellos/Venice Allen case, where TRAs launched a private prosecution based on a YouTube video of a talk in York and then made a fuss because Linda was wearing suffragette colours. (It is the incident that convinced me that something was going seriously wrong and we needed to be pro-active. At the time Richard Littlejohn, the DMs unapologetically right wing columnist, wrote a great article confirming that he disagreed with Bellos on just about everything, but defended her right to hold her views.)
The thing is that back then most of us were sleeping. Someone, presumably Stonewall, had sold Theresa May the TRA agenda and she had agreed to pursue self-ID. No protests from Labour, the LibDems or the Greens, and the first brave MP to stick his head above the parapet David TC Davies, got real abuse. Yes the Tories should have known. But so should the rest of us. I do not think for a minute that, on this issue at least, things would have been better under Labour. The consultation on Self-ID showed up women's concerns, and things have shifted. Recruiting Cass was a masterstroke as it provided an evidence based on which to push back on medicalising children. And in recent weeks Labour have indicated that there is a problem with their approach. Even the SNP if Yousaf's recent defense of FiLia indicates anything.
The questions should not be "Where were you in 2017" but "Are you brave enough to acknowledge what women have been saying and be clear about future policy". The issue at the next election will be getting voters out. After 13 years even people who lean towards the Tories are seen as wanting a change, whilst Starmer, though saying some of the right things, is still prevaricating so people don't know what he really plans and don't trust him. 60% of voters remain undecided. The fact that this issue is one where people do not see clarity is a problem of Labour's own making.
