It's the Daily Mail.

I'm not even going to click on that link, and I simply don't believe the story to be true either.

Pumpernickles · 14/10/2023 23:19

Remember when those researchers told the paper Jordan had shaved her head and they published without checking? She seemed just nearly loony enough to do that, but no.

Pumpernickles · 14/10/2023 23:20

Plus, there's no room in the inn

File under "desperate". Not even a good try, DM

PickAChew · 14/10/2023 23:23

Is this like the OMG Arctic Blast And We Will. All Be Snowed Under In October headlines that arise from a forecast of snow in the Scottish highlands?

It’s saying Labour would make harassment on the basis of gender identity an aggravated offence, the same as race or religion, and the definition of harassment would encompass using the wrong pronouns. This would be a criminal offence punishable with up to two years’ jail time. Whether that jail time has to be spent in a cell with the likes of Isla Bryson it doesn’t say. But the whole idea makes sense from a Labour point of view. If they get any majority they’ll be able to push anything they want through, and pleasing the gender zombies seems to be one of their priorities.

If you read it, that's not actually what it says.

Is this the same law which will make us have 7 bins?

Thelnebriati · 15/10/2023 00:26

''Labour would make attacks motivated by hatred of gender 'aggravated offences'. This would bring transphobic abuse into line with assault and harassment motivated by hatred on the grounds of race or religion''
There is no definition of 'transphobic'. You can't write meaningful laws about things that you cannot define.

This seems to be coming from a recent paper Transgender Ideology: A new threat to liberal values (see https://iea.org.uk/media/hate-speech-laws-will-only-undermine-basic-liberties/)

There was a thread about this as no one was sure if it was a wind up but there will be a meeting about it. https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4916868-where-to-get-tickets-for-this-event?reply=129839328

Rudderneck · 15/10/2023 02:01

Maybe a slightly general commen, but one thing that strikes me is that something like this could end up being the case almost accidentally.

That is, I can see Labour putting a rule like this in place, without really connecting the dots on how it could be used and what the logical outcomes would be.

It would be nice to think that legislators are more careful than that, but it seems pretty clear by now that a lot of laws are being passed because they seem to have the right sentiments, without really properly thinking about the consequences. Or even dismissing the possibilities when they are pointed out.

I agree.

FFS. Ridiculous bullshit when the Middle East is blowing up at the moment.

FFS. Ridiculous bullshit when the Middle East is blowing up at the moment.

I've obviously missed it, but what's labour going to do to help the middle East?

Coyoacan · 15/10/2023 05:01

I suppose it is a good idea that the Tories are releasing the rapists so there will be room for the pronoun criminals.

Highandlows · 15/10/2023 06:49

What a disgusting bunch. Of course this would be the case. Any freedom of speech not going their way of thinking would be hate speech. This is the reality and ignore it at your own peril.

@MariaLuna SO? Do we need to only talk about the ME? These are local issues and very important to many people here.

cuckyplunt · 15/10/2023 06:50

It’s quite simple, call people by the pronouns that they choose to use?

Rousblouse · 15/10/2023 06:51

Well much as I don’t want to champion Enoch Burke here in Ireland, at this rate there will be actual criminals serving less time than he will.

Really? They are not using those pronouns, they are choosing to force others to use them.

This, plus the link from @Thelnebriati (www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/37/part/II/crossheading/raciallyaggravated-offences-england-and-wales) plus this:

www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/offences/magistrates-court/item/disorderly-behaviour-with-intent-to-cause-harassment-alarm-or-distress-racially-or-religiously-aggravated-disorderly-behaviour-with-intent-to-cause-harassment-alarm-or-distress/

Does rather make it seem this can't be ignored cos it's the Mail actually.
