The Guardian have just posted an invitation to put questions to Eddie Izzard. This feels like a great opportunity to get a well worded, gender critical question out there. The thing is I'm a bit stuck, collectively we must be able to come up with something though!

Excellent question. I can’t see the gutless Guardian allowing it. But I hope he may read this thread and think about it.

It’s been like that for years. If you had a bit of time to kill, it used to be fun watching the blizzard of deletions as mildly challenging comments and questions were posted on a controversial topic.

I used to imagine it was blue-haired interns imposing their furious dogma. But now I presume it’s just standard Guardian practice. I haven’t read it for ages. The real-journalism Guardian was a sad loss.

Obviously it's not about a single comment. As I said before I see these kind of snide remarks about transpeople all the time in GC discussions (here, on twitter etc) and for once I thought I'd challenge one rather than wince to myself.

And as the response has just been to double down and defend mockery and ridicule - I just don't want to be a part of this. It obviously doesn't change what I personally think and believe but I can opt in or out of engaging in the debate and when it's this toxic I'm not interested in playing any part in fuelling it.

That's your prerogative of course. No one needs to be part of a conversation if they don't wish to be.

I do hope, however, that you police the TRA death threats, rape threats, cries of "dried up old hag", "you're just jealous because TW are sexier than you'll ever be", criticisms that Sharron Davies looks like a man, that Martina Navratilova is less of a woman than 'India' Willoughby etc etc ad nauseum as assiduously as you try to tone police women here reacting to a man making a mockery of womanhood.

That's good because it was quite a bizarre suggestion, which is why people picked up on it. No one is obliging you to do anything. Hope that's clear.

Yes you said that were allied to the GC cause but "now you've lost me". That was certainly a suggestion that you had changed your thinking on the underlying issues.

I actually agree about it being important not to make personal insults but I don't think pointing out the similarities in appearance between Eddie Izzard and a female cartoon character is toxic. In fact he might well welcome the comparison.

I wrote a long response which seems to have disappeared. To confirm I wasn't mocking Eddie's appearance when I said he looked like a dickhead. He looks like a dickhead because of his complete about turn from his funny routines, wearing his own clothes and running marathons - into being a two faced misogynistic desperate shyster of a dickhead. He's not surfing that corner anymore, he's jumped the shark.

Actually as @PikachuEars accused me directly of being transphobic I think I'm entitled to an explanation. People have been banned from these boards for less. Although tras toss the accusation around, it's still quite a serious charge to level.

So, @PikachuEars why is posting that Izzard, the 60+ year old male comedian, in 'girl' mode looks like Ursula? It's not the lack of resemblance, that's undeniable. If you can't see it, many, many other people can. Is it because she's the villain? In which case I have news for you about the character of Mr Hyde. A character that Izzard has chosen to play in 'girl' mode. I'm not even denying he looks like a woman, Ursula is a female character after all.
