Opinions are like arseholes…

Freedom of speech though - she’s free to say what she likes IMHO, as can you.

Mary1234567 · 05/10/2023 23:01

What nhs social media policy? I work for the nhs and we’re allowed to have political views. Lots of us are members of trade unions that are very vocal in their criticism of the Tory government, I was recently on strike with unite and we were all encouraged to post on social media etc. Nurses can be involved in politics! If it was a joke about harming a Tory patient then I’d understand, but the jokes just saying her preference would be to share a ward with a trans person than a Tory, if she were a patient. Nurses can be patients too and are tax payers etc, so she’s totally justified imo!

ScribblingPixie · 05/10/2023 23:01

I wonder if she'd rather treat a Tory trans patient or a gender-critical Labour voter? Maybe she should draw up a list of potential patients from her most to least preferred, just so we all know?

StarlightLime · 05/10/2023 22:49

Yes. I'd be tempted to bring it to her manager's attention.

JFC please do not report someone for having a stupid opinion on their personal SM.

Is that the world we really want to live in? Constantly policing each other and dobbing each other in? Would you do that IRL if you over-heard her in a pub, say, and happened to know where she worked?

Some MNetters would have been very at home in East Germany.

LunaTheCat · 05/10/2023 23:05

Her job is a nurse… she is posting on her own social media site. She is allowed to be a health worker with a view . Health workers can vote.

Inkypot · 05/10/2023 23:08

To be honest the way Tories have treated the NHS I applaud her. Nobody voting Tory can surely be treated by the NHS with a clear conscience. Absolutely abhorrent party and those voting for it are turkeys voting for Christmas.
And I say this as someone the nurse would likely label a TERF.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 05/10/2023 23:08

She could be standing for parliament and actively campaigning for one party and would still not be breaking any NHS rules. Quite a few HCPs become MPs (not all of them as pointless as Nadine Dorries..) and it is perfectly fine because - shocker - HCPs are allowed to have political opinions in their private life.

Pugfin · 05/10/2023 23:09

If she posts about being a nurse on her social media then yes she needs to be careful due to the professional standards. On a personal note its wild how many women would seemingly happily share a room when they're arguably at their most vulnerable with biological men and how many people in healthcare seem happy to ignore the biological reality that people can't change sex. Out of interest are transmen fighting to be allowed onto mens wards or is it just transwomen who are keen?

Indeed they are, bit questionable posting about an element of her work though. Posting fuck the tories would be fine, something relating to work is more of a no- I've worked with people who have been disciplined before for similar.

You should report her, surely its not appropriate for someone who transes their child at 8 to have access to others kids as a senior paediatrian? I wouldn't want someone who could do that treating my child, entirely different to politics which is opinion this is about a medical professional who should understand safeguarding and the cass review.

Right, yes: murdering 7 babies and making a mild pro-trans/anti-Tory statement on SM are exactly analogous. How very perceptive of you.

Photographsandmemories · 05/10/2023 23:15

How is it unprofessional?

No I am not bound by any social media policy. I wouldn't work in any dickhead job that tried to impose such a thing. My business is my business.

That meme can definitely be read as very transphobic!

WhichOfThePickwickTripletsDidIt · 05/10/2023 23:23

While I am deeply unimpressed with this nurse and wouldn’t love knowing that someone with her views was responsible for my care, I’m seeing her more at the level of ‘misguided smug arsehole’ than ‘evil’

There is no such thing as a central NHS social media policy anyway. Each NHS organisation has their own. It's unlikely that posting this sort of anodyne meme is in breach of it. It might be if she were at Board level, but very unlikely at ward level: restrictions on what employees can say on SM have to be proportionate to their role/potential harms, otherwise an employer risks breaching the HRA and falling foul of the unions.

SequinsandStiIettos · 05/10/2023 22:43

Well if snitches get stitches, you'd best hope she's not patching you up. Her opinion. Personally I don't express mine online but I'm not about to start moaning about anyone complaining about this government bunch of arseholes.

Yes, but as a nurse you just can’t post stuff like that on SM.

Dibbydoos · 05/10/2023 23:29

I don't know why a trans person has been singled out, I'd rather share a ward with anyone than a Tory!

Systematically tearing up the NHS because it was introduced by Labour and stops them and their mates profiying from ill health suffered by everyday people. Every Tory voter needs to feel the shame of that.

popebishop · 05/10/2023 23:33

Why is she picking out trans people? What's that got to do with anything? Isn't the news story the fact that wards are mixed sex, not that some people have gender identities?

Likelihood is she probably is working on wards with tons of Tories

ColdEvenings · 05/10/2023 23:33

The woman had an 8 year old trans kid!! Tells you all you need to know about her.

Delete and feel desperately sorry for her poor poor child.

Deathbyfluffy · 05/10/2023 23:27

Which bit do you think contravenes NHS/NMC rules?

If it's being pro-trans, I hate to break it to you but there are no parts of the NHS that have fallen harder for Stonewall than the regulators. There is zero chance that the NMC, or NHS England/Scotland/Wales are going to take action against her for expressing a pro-trans view.

If it's being anti-Tory, then her comment (via the meme) is very mild. She isn't saying that she wouldn't give a Tory good care or that they don't deserve NHS care. I see more contentious stuff than this meme from HCPs on social media literally every day. If the NMC went after nurses for this level of political comment, we wouldn't have any left.

bombastix · 05/10/2023 23:35

What a fool. When I worked in public service I kept political views and my work totally separate. Everyone can have personal political views but it's not part of your work.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 05/10/2023 23:37

Anyone who thinks that the NHS reliably log every complaint about anything - let alone an issue they are desperate to ignore - knows nothing about the NHS.
