'Louise Redknapp pulls out of Eternal reunion after her bandmates REFUSE to play LGBTQ+ festivals and Pride over claims they are being 'hijacked' by the trans community'

Louise Redknapp 'pulls out of Eternal reunion LGBT row with bandmates'

Louise Redknapp has pulled out of an Eternal reunion after two members of the band refused to play LGBTQ+ festivals and Pride on the tour.

I need more info on this. Like another poster said many LGB people like attending Pride (I know many don’t too) and this could be interpreted as not wanting to perform at a festival for gay people because their religion sees homosexuality as a sin. I have as much respect and admiration for someone who feels that way as I have for someone who doesn’t respect the right of women to have their own single-sex spaces.

If Louise Redknapp has jumped the gun for the purposes of virtue signalling - she’s done her band mates a disservice by not allowing them to state their reasoning. They are on the back foot and will now need to fend off accusations of homophobia. I’d like to hear a statement from them. Of course they will get enough flack for not supporting the Qs and the Ts as it is. I’m sure Louise is getting a load of support for her ‘inclusivity’ and will be hoping that that ratchets up her record sales and profile.

I’m not going to applaud anyone if their reasoning is a nasty dose of homophobia. And I wouldn’t applaud anyone who is possibly, quite cynically, trying to enhance their own profile off the back of the gay community by all this performative allyship either.

If they’re going to hold these views, they can take the consequences without crying “poor me”.

Great stuff. I do hope that every single person who supported prioritising male people’s demands above female people’s needs will ‘take the consequences without crying poor me’ as well.

Because currently ‘those views’ that Easther and Vernie ‘hold’ is reported to be a concern that trans people have hijacked the LGB agenda. Which is not controversial as some LGB people have their own political priorities as a separate group.

That would be really, really relevant if you were a member of the band.

It's just a simple observation.

I don't think many people would willingly choose to resume working with someone who had bullied them in the past.

RoyalCorgi · 25/09/2023 11:05

Actions have consequences

Unless you tell a crowd of aggressive young men to "punch a Terf", and then apparently there are no consequences at all.

Musomama1 · 25/09/2023 11:12

Ok even if they parted acrimoniously back in the day, I still don't think it's on to do the pantomime villain thing of 'I'm a proud ally.... and they are not'.

It's childish and as we've seen potentially very damaging to the women who are dissenting from 'allyship'.

Just say you're not doing the reunion and let others speculate on the reasons why which soon becomes yesterday's news.

Clymene · 25/09/2023 11:12

This was because the duo felt that the gay community was being hijacked by the trans community and they do not support this

I agree with them wholeheartedly

Not homophobic, in fact quite the opposite

Sueveneers · 25/09/2023 11:14

Seems like Louise has bullied the other girls out of the band. Then again TRAs are bullies, so....

Slothtoes · 25/09/2023 12:30

OK NRTFT just this article. The BBC reported it and even managed not to call them anti- trans! Obviously they aren’t if they’re supporting LGB people, so this seems like a bit of a positive watershed moment for journalism. Times are changing I hope

Stay very strong Esther and Vernie and thank you for standing up for women and LGB people.

(And what a shame that you are actively going with men’s rights activism waged against women and LGB people, Louise Hmm)

Sorry reading in haste

Easther apologies for mis-spell
Kelle in same Umbridge camp as Louise unfortunately.

LondonLass91 · 25/09/2023 12:46

Talk about throw your bandmates under the bus! Releasing a statement like that is despicable.

Shame on Louise and Kelle.

It'd be good to hear from Easther and Vernie.

Not really a great loss either way, but certainly is a money-spinner for Louise to position herself like this. I have mixed feelings, but it's interesting that the PR statement talks about how the organisers of the reunion are gay; almost as if they're saying that if you won't play Pride, you are definitely homophobic. I'd have thought it's quite possible to not be very into Pride, and not be homophobic. But I guess these days you either run around with a progress Pride bandana around your head, or you're a nasty bigot.

nothingcomestonothing · 25/09/2023 14:46

'The team behind the proposed Eternal reunion are gay including management, PR and tour promoter, and neither myself nor any of the team would work with artists who held such views about the trans community.'"

Is it a good idea for a publicist to be publicising that they refuse to work with people because those people fall into a category protected by the Equality Act?

ArabeIIaScott · 25/09/2023 15:33

We don't yet know what they said, or how they said it. It's just reported speech.

And yet I've been to many pride events and never seen those things.

It's almost as though you can't think for yourself and rely on being spoon fed by the media.

You must be attending different Pride events to the many of us here who have seen these things.

Codlingmoths · 25/09/2023 22:19

These are pictures obviously set in the main streets of towns, with hundreds of people around so obviously in the thick of it. They aren’t photoshopped to look like that’s where they are. Do I think it’s absolutely everywhere at pride? No. Do I know where it is and how to avoid that? No. Do I want to risk my children being exposed to that? Also no. Is it desperately important they go to pride so I should start researching to know where is genuinely family friendly? Not at this stage no. If you make it hard for parents to know if it will be ok then you make it less welcoming for parents and children. I’m not being spoonfed anything, I’m reacting like a good parent perfectly capable of performing a critical assessment of newspaper reports and of looking after my child.

"Is it desperately important they go to pride so I should start researching to know where is genuinely family friendly?"

Not for you, clearly, so I'm guessing you don't have a lesbian daughter.

Is it important enough for me to do that work? Yes, yes it is.

The las - family friendly - pride event we went to we sat in the sun and shared a table with a lesbian couple in their 60s. They chatted to DD about her experiences of their event, they talked to me (when DD was off looking at the stalls) about what it was like for me raising a daughter who is a lesbian, and they shared their own experiences of coming out in a different time.

I'm quite sure your 'good parent' dig was meant to imply that I'm a shit one.

That's where you're wrong.

And you really do sound as thought you don't have the first idea, sorry.

ChokkaQuokka · 25/09/2023 22:47

I just find it extraordinary that when straight people, especially straight white women such as Redknapp, pontificate like this they think their virtue signalling is actually virtuous.

I am also impressed that the BBC reported the quote accurately as being a concern for LGB being taken over by the T.

And surely a band reunion of straight women should perhaps let Pride be an opportunity for newer LGB – or indeed TQ+ – performers?

BaronMunchausen · 26/09/2023 12:35

DialSquare · 24/09/2023 17:29

This from Louise's publicist suggests that it's virtue signalling.

"'Louise is a huge supporter and ally of the LGBTQ+ community and both herself and Kelle told the duo they would not work with anyone who held these views, and as such the reunion as a four would not be going ahead."

The "Always & Forever" tweet under the Progress Pride flag certainly looks like performative virtue signalling. Unfortunate that in order to maximize her virtue she also felt the need to throw her ex-bandmates to the misogynistic wolves.

Given the threats and abuse that women with an opinion on this subject take, if Louise leaked this she should be absolutely ashamed of herself.

MargotBamborough · 26/09/2023 13:05

I don't think Louise cares about anyone except Louise.

I would be less surprised if they didn’t play Pride at all due to their religious beliefs and believing that homosexuality is a sin. I wonder if this is a story where the narrative has been twisted by the TRAs or media to make it more topical and get headlines.

Oh yes, this is my thinking too. Longtime Eternal fan here and very aware of the Bennett sisters reputations. Have they ever played Pride? Not that I can recall.

ScholesPanda · 26/09/2023 13:13

They didn't want to play Pride, now they don't have to.
Seems like they got what they wanted, not sure what the problem is?
