Who has most disappointed you?

I'd say Russell T Davies when he had his drunken rant. I get his concern that lgbt is being fractured. But his absent concern for Women and their rights was palpable. I honestly thought he had more sense.

Everyone who has fallen for this shite. All the women's organisations, especially the VAWG ones, all of the left, all of the civil liberties, and human rights organisations, all of the public institutions, all of the unions, all of the lesbians, all of alleged skeptics and humanists. Anyone who believes this unevidenced, irrational and pernicious shite is a disappointment. Its not who they are so much as they can't even articulate or justify what they claim to believe when you ask them. Many don't even don't seem to understand what it is they are supporting. How can you not be disappointed with that level of deliberate ignorance by decision makers and power holders?

WallaceinAnderland · 18/09/2023 16:12

Stonewall for turning on and working against lesbian and gays. Something no one would ever have imagined happening.

Law makers for making it possible for a male person to be legally female.

Policy makers for implementing self ID.

Governments and media for allowing the horrific backlash to anyone who tried to speak out and for creating the culture of fear we now all live in.

'Elizabeth Day. She’s seemingly such a sweetheart and wants to have a positive impact but she propagates misogyny with TWAW nonetheless.'

I think you're being extremely generous about her. She's a journalist, and makes a living out of fawning people to death on her podcast (which I used to really enjoy). She knows what side her bread is buttered, and seems quite happy to chuck women under the bus so she can carry on virtue signalling

I see Jess Phillips and Kathy Burke as very similar people. Both play up to the stereotype of 'gobby cow' and 'tell it like it is', but they fall apart like a cheap suit at the first bit of pushback.

Agree with all these disappointments

And personally, I am disappointed in a pediatrician friend of mine who truly believes the 'chromosomes and there aren't only 2 genders' bullshit. Truly believes it. This person operates on children and thinks sex doesn't matter.

He thinks I'm a terrible bigot for not affirming these children and talks to me in a super patronizing way about how I 'just don't understand'. I did recently call it child abuse to their face, which went down well, as I am sure you can imagine.

He reads the Guardian.

manontroppo · 18/09/2023 16:17

I'm not surprised by Brian Cox and Ben Goldacre - science is full of "right on" men like them who are just your common or garden misogynist. They never gave any serious indication that they were anything other than disappointments - they are just modern male academics.

Ohthatsabitshit · 18/09/2023 16:23

I think Atwood too. Such an intelligent woman, just so disappointing.

Shodan · 18/09/2023 16:24

I agree with all the ones mentioned here (although I hadn't heard about Dara O'Briain and Russell Howard- that news has disappointed me) and especially Emma Watson from the HP world.

And one of my brothers. He's always described himself as so open-minded and liberal but on this subject turned into a spitting, hissing, sneering A-grade twat. I actually had to eject him from my house because he went so far. Funnily enough, DP suggested that this might be because brother is possibly a TW (which isn't actually beyond the bounds)

popebishop · 18/09/2023 16:24

What has Ben Goldacre said? I had assumed he was just keeping quiet, but is he anti-women? Sad

most of that sceptic set, actually. For the ones that attempt to make some sort of "argument", I'm embarrassed at how poor they are.

Waitwhat23 · 18/09/2023 16:28

Conversely, did we do a FWR Women of the Year awards at the end of last year? I don't remember it happening, though I was so incandescent with rage at the GRR Bill, I may have missed it.

CurlewKate · 18/09/2023 16:29

The ones that baffle me lost are the s of proclaimed Skeptic community. Steve Novella, Robin Ince, Bill Nye, Dara O'Breian they are the kind of people who make doubt myself. I notice that Brian Cox is silent on the subject-I suspect his house might have been quite a stressful place over the past few years.

CurlewKate · 18/09/2023 16:30

*baffle me most are the self proclaimed Sceptic community...

Absolutely, you've summed it up brilliantly.
The absolute lack of even basic questioning of what you even claim to believe. Hence "no debate" is seen as an attractive get-out to those lacking critical thinking skills.

Margaret Atwood & Helena Kennedy are at the top of a very long list, and like a pp there are no golden bridges from me with regards to any MSP who voted for the GRC reform in Scotland. Those who voted against the “ six words “ can all go feck themselves too. They are evil, spineless cowards.

I have to second Helena Kennedy.

Rory Stewart. I went to "an evening with" recently, I admire his ability in his podcast to listen and engage with opposing views.

Almost the first thing he said on the "evening with" is that he and Alistair Campbell get a lot of messages from women asking him to engage more over trans issues, but that they are "broadly pretty relaxed" about transpeople and don't think it's a mainstream issue. Wrote it off in one sentence, didn't seem to have grasped the big picture at all.

Really disappointed me.

PotteringPondering · 18/09/2023 16:37

The Greenbelt Festival. For decades it was a haven for those of us interested in the overlap of faith, politics and the arts. Now it hosts drag for kids, drag for adults, seminars on trans children, and the likes of Peter Tatchell, Russell Brand and Jolyon Maugham as speakers. It's drunk every drop of the no-debate, misogynist Kool-Aid.

Oh. That is disappointing.

AgathaAllAlong · 18/09/2023 16:43

With the best will in the world, I think that it's unhelpful to frame political disagreement in terms of disappointment. All the "other side" would be disappointed in JKR. The reality is that these people do not, in virtue of their creative outputs, owe you anything. They certainly don't owe you political agreement. The only people we can perhaps legitimately feel disappointed in are those who are being hypocritical with it, or you know are just faking agreement for popularity .

Not Rory Stewart! Bummer I thought he was better than that ☹️

Lots of people.have disappointed me but just recently, David Tennant. Always thought he was a good actor and he comes across well in interviews. Now he's going around wearing creepy badges 🤮

Hope Michael Sheen hasn't drunk the koolaid too.

TinaYouFatLard · 18/09/2023 16:45

All of the above and also the Cambridge Dictionary.

I agree but I think with me it's just that it's being made crystal clear just how little power women have in society, how much men (and some women) absolutely detest women. The biological kind.

And I know this has always been the case but to have it laid bare, to have people so confident in their hatred is actually quite scary to me. I really do fear for.my daughter.

CyclingSam · 18/09/2023 16:50

Margaret Atwood is on my list too. I couldn't believe when she fell for the crap Jamie and Shaaba were pedalling. Which is a good excuse to introduce Maria MacLachlan to anyone who hasn't seen her.

I agree if we're talking about actors, performers and artists. I do think that disappointment is appropriate when it comes to scientists, sceptics and thinkers.
