At my library books not yet published but they have on order can be seen on the catalogue ready to place a reservation on. I am going to request my local library buy a copy

Yes, this is normally the case, that you can "pre-order" books, but not this one.

Use this form and ask them to buy a copy. It’s not in the consortium either.

I get that with loads of books. Usually old, out of date ones though.
Interestingly I can't get on the WRN website from my work laptop as it pops up with a banned website message . Stonewall or LGBT Foundation ( tested for experimental purposes) no problem.

Tough Crowd is number 22 in Amazon UK Hot New Releases list. I would love to see this book do well.

I imagine it would be higher if it weren't for people like myself who won't deal with Amazon. Eye Books are lovely to deal with though.

For a traditional publisher to think of a nonfiction book as a success, it has to sell more like 10,000 copies over its lifetime.

My order from the publisher was number 9000+. Apparently any book that sells 10K+ in one week is pretty much guaranteed to be on a bestseller list, so Glinner should be on the lists for at least the first week after publication.

Wouldn't that theory work for all the books on Amazon equally?

Hard to test but I suspect not. Reckon people who buy glinners book likely to be:

1. More politically engaged (with a small p) generally
2. More likely to use their purchasing power consciously- whether to support a writer or not to support amazon
3. If you're preordering it's a more planned conscious purchase altogther- you're not buying from amazon for speed/convenience

So I reckon it'll be significantly higher in overall sales charts than amazon charts

I bought from amazon so it would be obviously successful to many people. Amazon don't care, they'll show people what's selling.

Yeah I didn't mean they'll fiddle the charts! Just that their charts show what's bestselling through them- the ones on the newspapers show total sales, don't they?

I've realised though that my previous post sounds like I'm massively judgemental of people buying through amazon... it wasn't meant that way! I definitely see the benefit of helping it ride high in the amazon charts!

Well, I asked my local library to order and today got the following email which I'm rather pleased about - planning on buying it but now there's at least one copy in the system.

I definitely wasn't offended!! I think there's plenty of space for every purchase rationale. Good to see the publishers getting direct orders, good to see the word spreading through mass retailers...every purchase is important!!
