Tough Crowd, due out 12 October. I’m delighted to see this. He is such a good writer and has sacrificed so much in defence of women’s rights and reality itself. Hope it’s a smash hit.

I am the second on the library list to read, but the copies don't seem to have arrived at the library yet.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 23/10/2023 21:06

If anyone's in Surrey, they have one copy:

I’ve read it. It’s good. I liked the bits about creating scripts and the stories about how the tv series were produced. It felt a bit like the titanic movie in that you knew what was coming next wasn’t that great!! I surprised myself by knowing most of the stuff on the last bit already. He is very forthright and names names which is shockingly blunt/refreshingly honest in equal measure. I have passed in on to someone in the industry already.

CrossPurposes · 23/10/2023 22:47

The Libraries Consortium have got the ebook.

It’s just come available as a digital download from library. I had a notification today. I’m now on the hold list.

Deadringer · 24/10/2023 00:01

I see it has 160+ reviews on Amazon, that is astonishing.

10% of which are one-star. I'd be astonished if any of these were based on actually reading the book. I reported a few of the more obvious ones.

It's a great read - some of the passages in the first section are very funny. The story about his mum and the cat is a particular joy.

Like you, I knew most of the stuff in the second part already - I was hoping to have a bit more detail about Steph Hayden's legal attacks on Graham, but I think unfortunately Graham was was restricted by law in what he could say.

Deadringer · 24/10/2023 08:55

I see that none of the low star ratings are verified purchases. Surely on that basis they can be removed? Although I don't think negative reviews really make that much difference as long as there are plenty of good ones. I have never bought a book that didn't have some poor reviews.

Lismore · 24/10/2023 09:05

I was going to say the same thing Deadringer. Presumably none of the 1 star scores were written by people who have actually read the book as they are ALL unverified reviews.

ImaginingDragonz · 24/10/2023 09:23

Ordered from Eye xx

ArabeIIaScott · 24/10/2023 10:22

Some of the one star reviews were quite amusing, and I believe they will all help to boost the book's visibility. A contentious book will sell better than one that gets uniformly glowing reviews.

NoWordForFluffy · 24/10/2023 10:31

There's a one star review on Waterstones calling it 'absolute tosh'. From somebody who was allegedly (kindly) bought it by her dad. It amused me!

100% agree especially on the first half. Any young person thinking of a career in writing for TV or radio : just read this book. The distilled essence of what you will be taught on a film or media course and probably much better.

Not too many surprises in part 2 for people on FWR. But yeah he names names. He's not selling any alibis....

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 24/10/2023 10:41

I've just caught up with some of the Amazon reviews. There's always something afoot when an item gets a lot of 5-star reviews, a lot of 1-star reviews and nothing or very little in between.

My particular favourites are the accusations of GL showing 'Zero science' and of his 'Unhinged conspiracy theories'!

Of all the TRA arguments to choose to pursue when criticising people who are standing up for women against gynophobes, the bold accusations that they are 'denying science' simply leave you speechless!

Your reply kept me awake trying to remember the cat and mum story until I remembered the piano! As a family we have had so many wtf moments recently that I have to admit it didn’t make me laugh as much as it would have in the past just because it doesn’t seem that unusual/surreal.

It reminds me of the time I had to detail everything that was happening throughout the night on charts (so doctors could correlate human movements/the environmental conditions with the monitor readings on a very expensive piece of medical equipment we had taken home and was attached 24/7) and the cats brought in a live mouse that was doing a wall-of-death around the bedroom at 2am and so I was marking the time of each rotation it went over the bed! I had met the very strait laced consultant who analysed the traces and who I think had already decided I was a bit bonkers - so was cringing about handing back the charts. I think if I was to write a book of the last few years, no one would believe it.

But then again, Linehan wouldn’t haven’t believed he would write this 10 years ago.

I just downloaded his Audio book 📚

Mauricemossy · 24/10/2023 21:02

My local library has just agreed to stock..I am well happy!

Abhannmor · 25/10/2023 08:28

Re reading ..there's actually a couple of people he doesn't name. In some cases I'd say he doesn't want to judge people who are not financially secure themselves . And maybe a couple of golden bridges?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/10/2023 09:13

Inane, poorly informed DARVOs are all these people have.

Many of their “arguments” are inside out, back to front and upside down (or simply hypocritical). E.g. Transwomen are too scared of other men to use the men’s toilets - but have no understanding or empathy that’s exactly why many of us don’t want them - MEN - in women’s single-sex spaces.

Yes, the main thrust of their claims seems to be based on people supposedly hating trans people, wishing calamity on them and/or wanting them to cease to exist.

The simple reality is that we don't want them to take rights from other people (women and girls) to add to their own; we just believe that everybody should have the same/equivalent rights.

It's interesting how nobody ever tries to accuse women of being misandrists for not wanting any men to use female facilities, except when it comes to a very small sub-section of entitled men.

Musomama1 · 25/10/2023 19:19

He's got some very eloquent turns of phrase in the second half when talking about gender woo which I've earmarked. Fantastic writer. I've also been watching his obscure 1994 sitcom Paris on YouTube and giving it a go. The wonderful James Dreyfus is in it!

BezMills · 26/10/2023 06:29

In my experience, I'm not in any danger from other men in the toilets, not an issue for me, it's just that they kind of ming a lot of the time. (due to a small proportion of the users NGAF about keeping them naice for everybody)

Wavinginthewind · 26/10/2023 07:09

Tough Crowd is currently featured as a bestseller on Audible under Politics and Activism. And it's sitting at the top of popular new releases above Britney Spears.

I'm sure we can look forward to news reports of him only selling three audio books to appear in Pink News shortly. 😏
