MAFS - first transgender bride.

Is this really fair on the groom who has gone onto the show to meet a woman and is matched with a TW without his knowledge until after the ceremony?

I know some will say it’s only a reality tv show but surely if the groom thinks he’s being matched with a woman, this is wrong.

MAFS UK's transgender bride kept her past hidden until after wedding

It's the Channel 4 programme where singletons don't meet their spouse-to-be until they are at the altar.

I've never watched it so excuse my ignorance but are they really married? I mean legally.

Did you read the article OP. It says right there:

“However, the broadcaster has now admitted that they did tell the man in advance of filming, meaning that the organisation has duped their viewers.”

^^

If you read my later posts, the article has been changed since it was first published so yes I did read it - the original and the update

No - only dress up Iwasafool

Blogswife · 13/09/2023 19:37

Did anyone actually read the article that OP posted ?
It clearly says that the groom knew that the bride was TG ahead of the wedding !!

”However, the broadcaster has now admitted that they did tell the man in advance of filming, meaning that the organisation has duped their viewers.”

No it’s a ceremony for the cameras but they live together as man and wife during the series and decide at the end of they want to take the relationship forward.

Thank you, I thought it was a mad idea but then sometimes mad things do happen.

And if you read the whole thread you will see they updated the article a couple of hours after it was originally published.

At time of starting thread, none of the comments about him being told were there. In fact it said he didn’t know until AFTER the ceremony

Wait wait wait.... are you telling me a TV show which marries people who've never met for the purposes of entertainment isn't ethical??!

I'm shocked!

Come on, the entire thing is an unethical shitshow.

Of course it is. They're just plumbing new depths this time

Apparently they were for the first five series in the UK.

pharmachameleon · 13/09/2023 20:05

Can I ask which series this is of MAFS? I've never watched it but this thread has me interested!

'In all other ways, the integrity of the format was preserved. Our priority during matchmaking is to protect the wellbeing of the cast and create compatible matches, based on detailed assessment of individual preferences, as part of an in-depth, careful matchmaking process.'

This may have been the case initially. I don’t think it has been the case for the last handful.

I’d have had more luck with a hat and scraps of paper getting a genuine match.

And I don’t believe that the well-being of contestants is a priority.

Casting this contestant shows it. And the pp are correct, he was damned if he went ahead and damned if he didn’t.

PaperWalkAndTalk · 13/09/2023 20:14

Saw the trailer, and instantly suspected. Went online and found articles about the bride. The voice was the give away (from a very brief clip on the trailer).

determinedtomakethiswork · 13/09/2023 20:17

I imagine that they ask them a lot of questions about this sort of thing before they go on the program. It would be very insulting if someone was matched with someone they had an aversion to

WallaceinAnderland · 13/09/2023 20:26

Channel 4 have been forced to admit the man was acting.

Same here. I wasn’t even actually watching the trailer, it was on while I was doing something else, so I hardly registered it, but the split second I heard the voice, my brain knew what was going on. Looked up and thought ‘yep….OK. They’re really going with that? Wow.’

ArabeIIaScott · 13/09/2023 20:52

So ... they weren't gaslighting the contestant - instead they were gaslighting their viewers.

RedToothBrush · 13/09/2023 20:56

I think the narrative of the show is wrong.

The narrative is 'transwomen are just the same as women, look this guy is marrying one'.

Yet there are a whole host of reasons why that's not true and why that might be important to a guy.

Not least the conversation about whether you want children or not.

It really matters.

In not dealing with conversations like that, and the implications, you gloss over a world of issues.

Is the person post op? Do they have complications? If they aren't post op, do they want an op? Do they want other surgeries and how much will this cost financially? Conversations about the reactions of friends and family. And that's a three second brain fart on the subject. There will be tonnes more that you NEED to address as part of a relationship like this, because unfortunately it IS more complex.

In days of yore when I was last single your main concern when meeting a potential partner was if you were compatible/wanted the same things/seemed like a decent person. Now you have to consider are they actually really a man or woman !! 😂😳

@RedToothBrush

Excellent post. This isn’t just about Ella thinking she should be looked at the same as any other woman. There’s so many questions and scenarios that need to be addressed.

C4 seem to think - look she’s pretty and got boobs therefore she’s a woman and men should date her.

And Ella saying it’s about educating men - it really isn’t. We are allowed to be sexually attracted to whoever we want to.

The guy has gone ahead. But has said he didn't want to be involved in something so high profile. So was feeling pressured to a certain degree - he didn't want that aspect.

If he does split up, is he really equipped and prepared for a possible reality TV backlash?

There's been a number of reality TV stars who have said they really weren't prepared for the public reaction they got. The most recent one I can remember was one of the catfish contestants on The Circle. It really affected them in ways they hadn't expected. We also have a huge number of reality TV stars saying the aftercare on these shows is really lacking.

Maybe they will stay together. But the odds of that are against them. Which raises all these questions too about just how informed and free to consent without undue pressure this guy had.
