MAFS - first transgender bride.

Is this really fair on the groom who has gone onto the show to meet a woman and is matched with a TW without his knowledge until after the ceremony?

I know some will say it’s only a reality tv show but surely if the groom thinks he’s being matched with a woman, this is wrong.

MAFS UK's transgender bride kept her past hidden until after wedding

It's the Channel 4 programme where singletons don't meet their spouse-to-be until they are at the altar.

Unless he ticked a box saying he'd be happy to match with a transwoman then this is very very wrong. Not surprising MAFS has done this. Once it became the car crash trash show it is the past couple of seasons anything was possible.

As a little add on, I read recently that Michelle and Owen from the last of the 'traditional style' seasons are still happily married and expecting a baby. Delighted for them.

He was probably asked what his preferred gender identity of partner is. He will have ticked woman or female not understanding that the tv company are working to an entirely different definition of those words than he is.

LizzieSiddal · 13/09/2023 18:15

Ella said 'They need the education, but I don't want to harp on about it to everyone, I would rather them watch the show and see that I'm as normal as the other girls and relatable and hopefully people from that will feel that they can talk openly and date trans girls whether they are pre or post op.'

Hmm no love, that ain’t going to happen.

DoItAgainPlz · 13/09/2023 18:15

This would be sexual assault, surely? Even if they do nothing more than kiss.

faban · 13/09/2023 18:16

I was thinking about this and he must have been asked at the interview if this is something he'd be comfortable with. If not then it's absolutely out of order

Yes I saw that and wondered who the groom was going to be, a bisexual man, maybe?

As a bisexual person I would like to state that being attracted to both sexes does absolutely NOT make you unquestionably OK with dating trans people.

I would never date a transman or transwoman.

I bet that's it!

LizzieSiddal · 13/09/2023 18:17

I actually expect the groom will be fine with it or the TV show wouldn’t be showing it. Also Ella wouldn’t be doing these interviews saying they are happy with the show, if his groom had reacted in a negative way.

hamstersarse · 13/09/2023 18:18

A lot of people have been peaked by going on dating sites and not being able to discern the true sex of the potential match - this show will almost certainly peak a whole new demographic so maybe its a good thing

AmyandPhilipfan · 13/09/2023 18:20

As much as I think these programmes are unethical anyway, surely they had an interview with him and asked questions like 'are you attracted to trans women?' And 'are you willing to be in a relationship with a transwoman, knowing that biologically she is male and also that she will never be able to bear children?' Because if he signed up for it then that's one thing but if that conversation never took place and they have paired a heterosexual man with a transwoman despite him declaring that he was only interested in women, then that is awful.

'The series drew significant controversy at the time of its release, with all six men later suing Endemol, the production company behind the series, for conspiracy to commit sexual assault, defamation and personal injury due to “psychological and emotional damage”. The suit was eventually settled out of court.'

Miriam Rivera, star of controversial reality show There’s Something About Miriam, dies aged 38

The Mexican model found fame in 2004 on a Sky One reality series that depicted her trans identity as a comedy plot twist

Yep. That sums it up.

And the statement from Ella just reads ‘me me me me me me me it’s all about me’

I feel sorry for the man paired with this person but I hope it makes people think a bit if they are the kind of person who thinks this is unfair/deception then that must be because they accept that this person is male....and if they accept that, then that means ALL TW are male....and maybe that means those annoying women who have been saying it for years aren't just a bunch of bitter old meanies but have a point.

Cos you can't talk about this situation being unfair to the bloke but at the same time maintain a "be kiiiiiiind" stance on letting biological men in women's spaces.

DoItAgainPlz · 13/09/2023 18:26

SamW98 · 13/09/2023 17:51

Does anyone remember There's Something About Miriam? Men on there were paired with a TW without their knowledge and several took out lawsuits against the producers.

I remember.

There was a BBC Sounds podcast recently, "Unreal: A Critical History of Reality TV", presented by two plummy, middle class, media types (Pandora Sykes and Sirin Kale).

Their comments regarding the men's reactions to Miriam and the show were shocking - essentially accusing them of being toxicly masculine, bigoted bullied etc for not being overjoyed at the whole world seeing them flirt and kiss another man.

They really painted the men as VILLAINS in the saga and Miriam as the powerless, vulnerable victim who was exploited. Miriam died a few years ago, which only serves to suit this narrative.

It made me so angry and I'd been enjoying the podcast up until that point. There were 10 episodes and this was one of the last ones.

That photo though. Literally take a chest and stick two fake boobs on it like pom poms. No attempt to make them look real or blend in with the body at all.

Ditto the hip shape. Very odd looking. The bikini bottoms look all kinds of wrong. Very mean to dupe the poor groom though.

Hopefully true but given the current environment I wonder if the man felt he could be honest if he wasn’t happy? “If I say I’m not happy I’ll be slandered as transphobic in national media”. Let’s hope he truly was ok with it.

TBH looking at Ella I'm surprised the guy didn't smell a rat. I mean Ella doesn't look like any woman I've ever come across.

mateysmum · 13/09/2023 18:38

Looking at the photos I'd say Ella has had a LOT of surgery, but the result is a superficial representation and a caricature of a woman. Sorry Ella, as I guess it was a long, painful and expensive process.
I think MAFS have been completely unethical. No reason why a trans person can't be on the show, but there must be full disclosure up front.

Lastchancechica · 13/09/2023 18:48

How devastating for the groom.
If he protests in any shape or form he will be immediately slapped with the label trans phobic and hate crimes will follow as he is targeted by activists - his reputation in shreds, a global nightmare.

He is snookered so to speak but may very well be utterly repulsed by the situation not unsurprisingly. He may wish to have babies, an authentic relationship and as a minimum a connection built on trust and honesty.

He should end his time politely, and respectfully and sue the shit out of the producer. He will never live this down in Australia.

MAFs cheap shot for viewing figures, but it just turns me off the show completely.

sashagabadon · 13/09/2023 18:50

Yes unethical

Myalternate · 13/09/2023 18:54

I find it difficult to believe that the ‘groom’ hasn’t already been made aware of a possible union with a trans person.

Although I’ve never seen the show, so could be totally wrong 😑

Hellsbellsandspidersankles · 13/09/2023 18:55

but I feel like people aren't educated shouldn't be allowed to have a sexual orientation that excludes men these days

That's the PP editing the quote. Not the actual quote.

DarkDayforMN · 13/09/2023 19:02

I mean Ella doesn't look like any woman I've ever come across.

They primarily looks like a plastic surgery addict. I can see how someone might attribute anything odd about their appearance to a surgery habit rather than their sex. At least with clothes on. That bikini shot gives the game away immediately.
