As a mother and a feminist, I am So. Damn. Tired. I have no more energy to keep talking about how men harm women, how women need single sex space for privacy, dignity and safety. We've been talking for years, and been called 'terfs' and 'bigots', and worse. We just want women's rights to be protected.

We need more men to step up and speak out.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/10/2024 21:53

Brilliant statement from Winston. Thank you!

Biffology · 07/10/2024 21:59

@ArabeIIaScott

It's mainly men who are causing these problems.

On the other hand, Winston's saying that a woman has been the originator of this situation.

So there may be a discussion that men need to have with other men but also an issue with women, ultimately making problems for other women.

That might be a key element in the ideas I'm searching for, where women parcel off what might turn out to be the main part of the issue to men - the bit that men are, in fact, the perpetrators of - but can then focus in on this other thing - what one might term 'luxury beliefs'.

I was just wondering who the local MP is. Turns out it's Abtisam Mohamed (Labour), all I know about her is that she saw off Eddie Izzard as a candidate, so perhaps she isn't all bad!

WarriorN · 21/11/2024 08:02

Ooh I missed that @lcakethereforeIam, thank you!

Car danced all the way to work as, finally, I've heard a song from that latest album on 6 music. Nick Grimshaw said he had coo cool on repeat in 2023.

They've played the odd older song but not from that album since the 'hoo har.'

Reviving this thread just to share a timely update from Roisin - unbelievable this was two years ago.

She is really a class act.
(tried this earlier and my phone went funny so hope it works this time)

You stood your ground, Róisín, well done!

I am in awe of how measured she is in the face of the most horrific bullying. 'Props to The Guardian'... their (many times revised) review is one of many articles they have published during this dark period that stands as testament to how they abandoned and silenced women. I hope, some day, they remove all but the five stars.

WarriorN · 09/09/2025 06:06

Thank you for reviving the thread.

it’s gutting to read how badly she was censored and cancelled for saying what Wes steering has made law. Shame on bbc who stopped playing her album. I heard it first on 6 music but then it was dropped.

I’ve heard her other work being played but never that album.

I know a music producer who said it is considered her best work. We both went to her tour and I 100% agree.

*speaking as a long time fan from the 90s

oh I clearly had heard one from it! But over a year later and only once

and she clearly wasn’t given the expected level of reception

I went to one of her gigs as a result of the kerfuffle. I go to a lot of gigs and would rank that among the most enjoyable. The audience was lovely and friendly too.

sandgreen · 09/09/2025 09:07

The more I re-read that statement, the sadder it makes me. She isn’t a ‘political’ artist, nor does she tell people what to think. She expressed a personal opinion, once, and that was all it took. She has a way with words here, capturing the magnitude of it all in a very understated way, but easy enough to grasp the real horror of it.

In her replies she tells someone she’s writing a book, but that might just be a turn of phrase. But the personal abuse she’s got under that post - still - is disgusting, and certainly not very intelligent.

There is a good thread from Mr Menno about this too: MrMenno 🏳️‍🌈🎶 on X: "1 / It's heartbreaking to read what an impact this has had on Róisín. She said nothing wrong. Multiple systemic evidence reviews have since vindicated her and at least 12 countries have changed course on 'puberty blockers' All this was started by Andrew Davies aka @joannacuddle" / X

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/09/2025 09:29

I agree, it’s very sad that she was treated this way. That Guardian piece is fucking disgraceful.

ArabeIIaScott · 09/09/2025 09:47

'My album Hit Parade came out 2 years ago today, in the middle of a controversy. Having been told previously by music journalists that it was already “album of the year” when the controversy broke I was instructed by the same people to admit “ignorance” and apologise or face a drop in scores. These messages were passed on to me by my then record label, Ninja Tune. I have the receipts. This is not journalism or criticism, it’s authoritarianism. The record did indeed suffer revised scores across the board and was left off the end of year lists. It wasn’t just upsetting for me but also very frightening to see how the whole of the music media, in tandem, were able and willing to punish a work of art for the sake of activism. To say I’ll never be the same again is an understatement. Props to The Guardian for not changing the 5 star score. But the piece itself is rotten to the core. And the record was never again mentioned by them, I really hope one day that changes.'

Belting record. I bought it at the time, like a lot of posters here I imagine. The G review was cowardly and shameful. These are the people who tell the world they are the good guys?

INeedAPensieve · 09/09/2025 10:11

I'd already stopped being a guardian reader after the way they'd treated Suzanne Moore and then when I discovered the real reason Hadley Freeman left (who was one of my favourite guardian writers). I think I'm still registered with them but I've not commented since and I stopped my subscription when Hadley left and I found out why. I believe the rot started to set in back in 2015 when they turned their back on the real stories about the sexual assaults and rapes in Cologne.

So so disappointed in them. My DH still subscribes and reads it. Drives me nuts and I have to stop myself reacting negatively when he reads it to me or tries to get me to come back. Nope. Not until they apologise to all the women they've wronged. Starting with Roisin.

duc748 · 09/09/2025 10:22

What makes it more annoying is the G act as if they have the bloody moral high ground! And this is how they treat people like Roisin?

ETA: grammar

WarriorN · 09/09/2025 19:29

What is ridiculous is the “moral high ground” some posters take over listening to her music.

ffs!

OP posts:
Bedheadbeachbum · 09/09/2025 21:39

I honestly can't believe just how captured the music industry is when it's an industry historically brimming full of gender non conforming people like no other - from David Bowie and glam rock to punk to the New Romantics etc etc etc.

The biggest sign to me that gender dysphoria is something many of us go through and come out the other end is that NONE of those very famous non conforming artists have come out as non-binary in their mature years.

Hats off to Roisin Murphy.

Well, the Spanish Inquisition also took the moral high ground....

AelitaQueenofMars · 11/09/2025 20:55

I went to one of her shows at the time, too. It was feckin’ fantastic, just as good as in the Moloko-era. I was so glad to see the reception she got, from a substantial crowd.

Sigh…don’t know what happened to remove the NettleandBramble quote…

Burntt · 11/09/2025 22:06

I very much dislike her style of music. Never heard of her before this thread. I bought her album and had Spotify play it on repeat whenever I was out for a while back then. Can’t believe it’s two years ago! I must remember to put it on for the dog while I’m out more. It’s disgusting how she’s been treated
