Interesting to see this article surface.

The Guardian is embroiled in more turmoil over its stance on the trans debate, with an internal meeting setting staff at loggerheads.

Pharmaceutical forms are always looking to expand business, especially if there are life long customers to be found.

I've thought for a very, very long time that the Grauniad is writing primarily for US readership. It's where the money is , so consequently articles are written to appeal to a certain readership. It's one reason why i stopped reading it, the articles were of no interest to me and had little bearing on life in the UK. A lot of it is , what I will call, identity politics. There are very rare articles that are well written, i often feel an adolescent has contributed.

Me too. It used to be pretty decent way back when

It’s shock jock type stuff now just from TRA plus doom angle

One individuals opinion isn’t much. The fact of the matter is the “big pharma” link is over-cooked.

You’re offering your “one opinion” I see. Have you done a detailed analysis or just taken a punt on what will provoke?

WorriedMutha · 12/09/2023 10:09

Why would I want to buy newspaper that I expect to speak truth to power when it can't stand up to the adolescents on its workforce. And don't get me started on its status as a poodle to the Americans. Irony overload.

The amount of money “big pharma” makes from meds associated with gender reassignment is tiny in the overall scheme of their business.

Only it you think short term

The rebranding and new niche markets can be a long term money spinner.
Get a child on a rebranded drug at 10 or 11 and having them for life.
No extra R&D, no liability as its used off lable thats free money.

Even normaliaing the idea that R&D is not needed is a "good thing" for profits.
And that cosmetic creams pills are a "magic solution thing" because a 15 year old is able to make an informed choice lots of long term possibilities there too.

WorriedMutha · 12/09/2023 10:12

And slight derail but has anyone seen John Boyne's Ode to Owen Jones aged 39 and a quarter today. Check it out for the lola.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/09/2023 10:12

Let’s start meditating kids then! As long as no one’s making a profit out of it it’s a great idea amirite?

Perhaps kids should meditate, I don't have an issue with a bit of mindfulness lolGrin

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 12/09/2023 10:14

Rats Eresh you got me

I of course spotted the stitch up by auto correct as soon as I hit post but forgot about the new edit function

I was just sneaking back to hide my incompetence but you got in first damn you

Lots of organisations love proclaiming themselves "anti-imperialist" whilst doing exactly what Americans tell them to.

Heliotroper · 12/09/2023 10:20

The USA's health care system is unique in that it allows for aggressive marketing of drugs. It is not uncommon to see adverts pleasing for people to ask their doctors about new drugs. The marketing persists in the political arena too and effects academic research.

It is no accident that Trans Right Activism started in America or that Britain that has completely different health system is known as TERF Island. Even though there have been some disasters with Tavistock etc we have never reached the depths of depravity where kids have had healthy body parts removed. The NHS makes it much harder for new 'treatments' to become accepted.

Bloody hell

And we are seeing the push here for the ideology that underpins it via the Guardian

Norman Spack, Boston-based endocrinologist famous for “salivating” at the prospect of medicalising children for life, took the Dutch model, ran away with it, monetised it (by default, because the US health system works that way) and it spread across the USA like wildfire.

Susie Green went to Norman Spack, brought that run away diffusion model back to England and bingo! You have the Tavistock scandal.

That’s a very small % of the total surgery market in the US though.

And surgery encompasses more than meds which is what “big pharma” makes.

My point stands: “big pharma” is overcooked.

That may be true, I don't know, but it's not for want of trying.

A more convincing argument than repeating your subjective use of 'overcooked' might be to find figures for the total surgery market - as we're looking at growth perhaps find some other fields with that level of growth for comparison.

You're talking about 'meds', too, so some figures on those might also be interesting.

They are easily google able. The outpatient surgical procedure market alone is worth around 122 billion, so you can add a lot more to that figure.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 12/09/2023 11:37

Well I don’t know about you lot but I’m now completely convinced that there’s no way the US medical industry is going after a market with an estimated revenue of $5bn. I mean, what’s in it for them?

EasternStandard · 12/09/2023 11:37

It may not be a lot in the over all figure but for some people it’s a way to improve their livelihood

A name was given below as an example

That £ drive is a powerful one

I have no idea why we are seeing this sweep so much over western democracies though. It’s in our politics, media and laws

inkjet · 12/09/2023 11:37

Did anyone challenge Sonia Sodha and Susanna Rustin or any of the other blasphemers? It sounds like no-one tried to counter their arguments, they just recorded them and leaked them to try and stir things up. Which sounds like typical TRA behaviour. The only surprise is that they didn’t run to Ben Hunte of Vice.

maltravers · 12/09/2023 11:40

How many surgically and hormonally altered minors and young people are acceptable to you GoT? I see 700-800 mastectomies on teenage girls in the 13-17 category in that report. Are you good with that? Not a teeny weeny concern that like Chloe Coke they might have been confused and might regret it? Do you have any teenagers btw?
