FFS. Just as I start to think the grown ups are back in the room.

Rishi Sunak set to drop legal plans to bar transitioning in schools

Very disappointing. Come on Sunak, we expected better.

Boomboom22 · 06/09/2023 22:05

Ffs it never ends. This is terrible news. The EA gender reassignment needs looking at then!

Boomboom22 · 06/09/2023 22:06

Maybe we need a new petition on amending the ea to either adults only or not at all and just sex.

TeenEyeroll · 06/09/2023 22:07

Ffs F Off Sunak.

Anxioys · 06/09/2023 22:08

This man has run out of time. He won't be making any changes to the Equality Act either, imo.

WallaceinAnderland · 06/09/2023 22:25

Could be because the legal challenges are taking too long and he wants to get guidance into schools asap. I'm sure this can be revisited but for now teaching staff really need to know where they stand.

JanesLittleGirl · 06/09/2023 22:30

The article is completely evidence free. I think that this is the Times attempting to push Mr Sunak towards supporting a clear single sex arrangement in schools.

JemOfAWoman · 06/09/2023 22:35

I read on 'X' that lots of teenagers are now treating it all as a joke. They are fed up of others getting preferential treatment because they feel special. It's become a piss take 'don't do that you non binary' etc!

A sure way to get teenagers to stop doing something is for adults to make it fashionable.

We can only hope 🤞🤞🤞

ANameChangePresents · 06/09/2023 22:47

Complete fucking madness. If this is the best a CONSERVATIVE government can achieve to row us back to sanity, then we are lost.

Toseland · 06/09/2023 22:55

I've been shouting at him today too - he should remove Gillian Keegan ASAP.

God I hope so. It's interesting that they suggest it's keegan in one corner and Badenoch in the other. I don't think The Tomes have a lot of time for GK.

It mentions Kemi Badenoch so many times and in such depth that you can assume the government source is pretty close!

It's shortly conference season, Sunak is weak and it's all to play for in the "who gets to be leader after we lose" game.

I hope you’re right

And also this could be the case

Could be because the legal challenges are taking too long and he wants to get guidance into schools asap. I'm sure this can be revisited but for now teaching staff really need to know where they stand.

The thought of Labour coming in, if they win, without any legal changes first is utterly depressing

IwantToRetire · 06/09/2023 23:35

Interesting as Sex Matters say they too have taken legal advice and say under the EA exactly the opposite. https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4889341-schools-are-in-danger-of-breaking-the-law-on-sex-and-gender-sex-matters

But agree this is kite flying or rather testing the waters as it says pretty much what a similar article said about a month ago. Attorney General blah, blah, blah. Kemi Badenoch dont be such wimps.

Didn't the Cass report conclude that social transition was the single biggest indicator of subsequent medical transition?

If not the Cass report, it was some other report.

Given that children are targeted and taught how to alienate their parents if they disagree with social transition, leaving it up to parents seems incredibly foolhardy.

And likening it to section 28 is straight out of the TRA Load of Old Bollocks Playbook.

I wish the government would provides some bloody clarity as to what they think transitioning actually is. It's nothing to do with sexual orientation. Is it a medical condition? A metal health issue?

How can parents, at the behest of their children, direct schools to accommodate a medical issue, that is not diagnosed? And where is the evidence that accommodating it in this way is beneficial?

And What difference does it make if it's in the equality act?

Can people self identify as disabled, just because it's in the equality act?

It's a mess. Switching from a civil rights issue to a medical one, to a mental health one, and back again, at breakneck speed.

RealityFan · 07/09/2023 00:10

Sunak is planning a massive final push reshuffle after the conference season to foreshadow the GE in 2024.

We'll know if this article is right, if Keegan stays in place at Education.

Right now, I think it's one of the major conceptual schisms in the Tory party. Whether Badenoch can push her POV, or whether Keegan prevails.

Indeed I think this will presage the battle to lead the party after they're routed next year.

If it's true that the 2010 Equality Act prevents any prohibition of gender identity change by pupils, then there can't be any limit on age. 17, 15, 13, 10, 5, 18 months in nursery...gender change is permitted by law.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/09/2023 00:14

Of course he has. Is anyone actually surprised?🙄

Gillian Keegan said this a few weeks ago.
Rishi Sunak is saying it now.
The Tory party are not going to do anything about the trans shitshow in our schools.

IwantToRetire · 07/09/2023 00:41

Mr Sunak is being pulled in opposite directions with some backbenchers wanting him to stop kids transitioning while others want a softer approach.

One well-place insider told The Sun that work on the trans rules - and deciding whether to legislate - has all-but stopped over the summer and is being sat on by No10.

Another said: "There's a debate about whether they want to change the law, which will take ages, or do it with guidance now - which seems to be what some in the Department for Education prefer. The King's Speech is already filling up fast."

With an election next year time is tight to ram any new laws through Parliament.

Wouldn't normally quote the Sun but think this is probably what is going on. Not enough time for a law, but would guidance be enough, and is it a priority with the likelihood that Tories dont have much longer. (never thought I would be quoting the Sun.)

Tootsweets23 · 07/09/2023 06:49

Bloody hell they are even more useless that their already understood level of uselessness. Being sensible on this issue was the only mark in the positive column for the tories, and now they've screwed that up too. Slow hand clap.

LizzieSiddal · 07/09/2023 07:07

When is the Cass report due?

This is what I hoped might happen eventually.

Trans has become a youth culture (albeit one that has been planted by adults). Imagine if we’d all had to celebrate the goth or the punk when we were young and our teachers had got involved in giving us special privileges or supporting us hiding that we were goths from our parents.

Other youth must be sick to the back teeth of it all. They have to live this nonsense day in day out

imed · 07/09/2023 07:54

There always have been, and there always will be males with (Malaga Airport) tendencies.
The current social contagion in schools is completely different and in my daughter's school it is becoming tedious for the majority and much less fashionable.

Anxioys · 07/09/2023 08:06

What's happened here is that the meeting to plan the legislation for this term and next has been held in Whitehall and changes to the EA have not made it to the list.

The reasons are political. One this measure is controversial, two, the judicial review risk is significant and three, the chance of legislation being made before the legal challenges is none, as is guidance, since that will be reviewed. This is one shit show that the PM has decided he will avoid.

The article or leak of government policy is so well informed and so detailed about who did what that I imagine there will be some very angry stares at Kemi Badenoch. About as subtle as a house brick.

EasternStandard · 07/09/2023 08:22

I doubt Labour has more appetite for legal changes on this, if they get in.

God we’re screwed
