F*****g pronouns

I've avoided it for years because it's rubbish but have now been told I put my pronouns on my email or else.
So I've put us/we and when asked what that was all about I said I've always felt like two people and want to be addressed as such.
Apparently I am taking the piss.
I'm not sure it's me taking the piss and if I want to be two people I will be. I'm 61 and in my opinion know my own mind.
It's all such a ridiculous farce anyway.

Will you get two badges and payslips?

I'd start campaigning for them, now you've been forced into outing yourself

So what part of your employment contract has your employer told you that you are in breach of by failing to provide pronouns?

DialSquare · 17/08/2023 22:41

I could go along with this. I'm constantly eating for two and there's definitely room for two in this body.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/08/2023 22:42

Yes it's bloody ridiculous. If they object to us/we, you could always put I/Me. Or you could point out that making employees state pronouns is against the Yogyakarta principles and risks forcing someone to unwillingly 'out' themselves, so it could potentially upset people who consider themselves to be trans.

Tirediam · 17/08/2023 22:44

Ask your employer what @JanesLittleGirl said.
Alternatively ask why highlighting a protected characteristic is needed on an email signature. She/her shows you’re of the female sex.. sex is protected. Are there any other protected characteristics they want you to put on your email signature and why?

Joolsin · 17/08/2023 22:46

When they say you're taking the piss, tell them you're feeling incredibly invalidated and triggered, nay victimised, throw all the stock phrases back at them ... literal violence, etc, etc. Bet that puts them on the back foot.

NotBadConsidering · 17/08/2023 22:47

put my pronouns on my email or else.

It is against Yogyakarta Principle 6F to force someone to declare their gender identity. Tell them your response was due to the distress of such a breach and you will be seeking employment law advice on this.

EdithStourton · 17/08/2023 22:49

I've always said that mine would be fuck/off, but I'm in the happy position of being on the brink of retiring anyway.

OP, as other have said, your employee is on dodgy ground.

PimpMyFridge · 17/08/2023 22:53

Ask if you can use adjectives instead, makes as much sense as pronouns. 😉

They'll say it's a failure to comply with reasonable instructions.

Fenlandia · 17/08/2023 22:59

How do they know you're taking the piss? This is like the non binary cops in Australia or Isla Bryson not being really trans - self ID means self ID, including whatever pronouns you wish to state.

Ifeelsuchflutterings · 17/08/2023 23:03

It also worth pointing out, if you want to speak up about this, that they are actually going against Stonewall advice by insisting on pronouns

Hotfeetcoldfeet · 17/08/2023 23:04

Mandating pronouns is a form of compelled speech that violates the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion and the right to free speech (Articles 9 and 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights), and is a breach of the Equality Act 2010.

User601 · 17/08/2023 23:07

Choose one from a list - how can they criticise you then? The more inconvenient the better. I fancy "ae".

I love it. Take your 2 selves to work everyday.

ThreeLocusts · 17/08/2023 23:52

Kudos OP for thinking of this response 😂

I realise it's far from funny for you though. Looks to me like there is some good advice on this thread, hope some of it is useful.

Don't let the morons get you down 🍷

ThatWhiteElephant · 18/08/2023 00:11

Your reply (us/we) really made me laugh!
I don't see how they can make you do this, surely it's a choice to add this to your emails (and madness)

GrumpyPanda · 18/08/2023 00:13

Do you interact with foreign colleagues much? If so, you could specify the formal 2nd person form of address, so: "French: Vous. German: Sie".

CantThinkOfANameAtAll · 18/08/2023 00:14

I would tell them that my pronouns are like my religion or star sign. Surely they wouldn't ask you to put your religion or ethnicity or house rising on your email?

I don't think they can actually force you to do it. Not everyone has pronouns. It's creating a hostile work environment which is against the law.

StopTheWorld1WantToGetOff · 18/08/2023 00:24

Or else what?

PandaExpress · 18/08/2023 00:37

Don't do it. Refuse. It's at the very least, a violation of your privacy! They can't sack you for refusing. No way in hell, will I be putting pronouns on anything.

You are a similar age to me.. I am fully expecting this soon at work. They can fuck right off !
