'Cheryl has promised to "bring the glamour" to the kitchen but has also been "cooking my little Essex bum off" in preparation.
She added like every Essex girl she is a lover of a chippy at the end of a night out and always had a hankering for a battered sausage or saveloy.'

The drag star says being on Celebrity MasterChef is a way to have voices of the LGBTQ+ community heard.

'The drag name is based on the artist Cheryl, formerly known as Cheryl Cole. Cheryl Hole has been quoted as saying, “My drag name comes from the icon and Geordie princess Cheryl Cole. Cheryl have inspired so much of my life” which we don’t agree would be interpreted by the majority as^^ misogynist. Instead, it’s cheeky play on words which could be explained as such in a family setting and so we saw no reason to exclude her from the show.'

A 'cheeky' play on words? How is it 'cheeky'? What is the pun referring to, so that I can explain it 'in a family setting'.

I want these fuckers to spell it out.

This!!
Its all just so fucking boring. Woman hating, sex clown bullies, masquerading as "she" and being enabled to sexualise a fucking cheese sandwich while simulating oral sex with John bloody Torode. Just fuck off.

Saw this and thought of this thread.

'All I will say is people clearly don’t understand the art form of drag and it’s celebration of women. Women shaped me into the person I am today either through music, their words of wisdom or support. In no way do we mock women at all, so to throw that argument at me is in vain.'

'People can continue to hurl abuse at me, liken my work to “woman face” but at the end of the day. This has all stemmed from me speaking up and using my platform on the hate that is directed to our community. And you’ve proved everyone right.'

'Please enjoy tonight’s episode. Remember it’s a light hearted entertainment cooking show. I’m not doing anything other than using a few pots and pans & an oven. I’ll see you all on the other side'

If you are not mocking women, Cheryl, perhaps you can talk us through why you use the name 'Hole'?

I’m so glad he’s gone. I can watch the rest of this week without wanting to hurl something at the tele.

The other contestants are all fabulous. Sam’s sister was dying as she was filming this show, so I really hope she does well.

I just sent a complaint, needs a large volume to get anywhere

I'm surprised drag hasn't been cancelled for being offensive yet.
You'd think a man dressing up as a woman as a joke would be seen as offensive to men dressing up as women but wanting it to be serious.

Way back in 2015 Free Pride in Glasgow banned drag queens due to trans complaints but were forced to do a U-turn. I wonder why/when the rapprochement happened?

SamW98 · 16/08/2023 22:37

And why oh why did John snd Greg say ‘let’s talk about the 3 girls’ - and include Cheryl?

Heliotroper · 16/08/2023 22:38

drhf · 16/08/2023 09:59

Sam Fox is also appearing in Celebrity MasterChef.

But of course a middle aged lesbian, however beautiful, even one who has spoken publicly about how difficult she found it to acknowledge her own orientation, is much less exciting and glamorous than a drag queen.

Especially a drag queen whose stage name is misogynistic and offensive to the person whose image is being pastiched, and whose act prominently features misogynistic stereotypes.

Excellent point

It seems what on the BBC lesbians do not represent the LGBTQ+ community

GrandMarnierChocolate · 16/08/2023 22:47

GrandMarnierChocolate · 16/08/2023 22:48

Here's La Big Bertha who appeared on a French TV cookery show a little while back. I complained. Heard nothing back. In case you can't see the costume, it shows the cuts of meat. Basically, a big cow with a big cow name mocking women. The presenter is black, I wonder if they'd invite someone sporting Blackface on... (can't manage to post my pic)

That's just about the most gaslighting thing I've ever read.

I read that article with my eyebrows at my hairline

  1. why is he doing a reality show in character, the weirdo?

  2. why has he got such a horrible name?

  3. why the fuck is he wittering about sausages? Is it ‘cheeky’?

  4. why is this offensive bullshit on before the watershed?

  5. why do I still pay my tv licence again? (Oh yes, Radcliffe and Maconie, the end)

argh

Don't need a TV licence to listen to the radio...

Mollyollydolly · 17/08/2023 00:45

I caught the end of it tonight, he set both dogs off barking with his screaming at the end. Dogs aren't stupid. I don't understand how drag Queens are suddenly women, why are they all calling him 'she'. He's a drag act surely he's not claiming to be a woman is he?

This is rubbish.. if you think anyone was simulating oral sex on Masterchef you are mad

I have questions on this, can anyone provide answers?
I can't say I've ever been much of a fan of drag but have I've become much more uneasy about it recently. It seems to have changed in the past few years.
Why is there a conflation between drag queens and trans people? There never used to be. I thought Drag Queens were at pains to put a gulf between themselves and actual trans persons. (I know cross dressers come under the Stonewall 'TQI+++ umbrella' but thought that was just Sonewall shilling to avoid oblivion as times change.)
And I didn't think many DQs were indeed transwomen, unless they're jumping on a bandwagon now, of course .... Has that changed too?

Presumably the cross dressers referenced in the Stonewall umbrella are people who don't do it just for putting on a show. I.E. they cross dress in everyday life.

So is the 'Drag is different, it's traditional entertainment, it's for families' mantra just bollocks? And it's for trans women only now?
Was Paul O'Grady actually trans? I thought he was just a gay man. Is RuPaul trans? He seems to be a man when he's not performing.
Othwerwise I cannot see why drag queens, who have been actors and comedians, straight or gay, would want to be lumped in with trans - how is it in their best interests?

I have recently been told that drag can include women and none of them have to be gay, so I don't see what it has to do with inclusion at all.

DiabolicalFinial · 17/08/2023 01:24

I’m still waiting for the BBC to give me a “family friendly” way of explaining what a C. Hole refers to (is that cunt hole, cervix hole, cum hole, ???). Revolting.

Rudderneck · 17/08/2023 01:25

So - I think it's so stupid that having a drag queen on has become the thing. But, tbh, I think it's kind of a fad. It used to be the thing to have a camp gay man, or a lesbian, and I suppose that's not edgy enough anymore. (And I am not saying that there should only be straight people, but these shows are very typically tokenistic about their contestants.)

But as far as the name: it's crass and vulgar, but I think there is already precedent for this sort of thing on mainstream tv etc now. The one that comes to mind most obviously is the band Hole. The name was meant to be edgy 30 years ago or whatever, but now it's just out there, I am sure many parents listened to their music and would be happy to talk about it with their kids.

Which I suppose goes to show, when it becomes a thing to push what is edgy, in 30 years time it will just be part of the general culture and not edgy any more. So better think about whether that is a good idea.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/08/2023 01:33

They are women though, "Cheryl" is a man. Reclaiming a slur isn't the same as appropriating it.

Catiette · 17/08/2023 07:41

Haven’t read the full thread, but got to @LoobiJee’s tongue-in-cheek complaint & wanted to add…

Ive not time today or I’d do this myself, but…

I actually think that awful “explain to the kids” response may be something of a gift. I’m not surprised the initial complaint was rejected - I’ve experience of this, but also recognise they’ll perceive themselves as upholding freedom of speech etc.; I actually have some sympathy with this - in the current climate, it’s hard to see how “she” could be banned from appearing) BUT…

To state so explicitly that this is “family friendly” & could be discussed with children is a heck of an admission of the blurred boundaries & misogyny that wouldn’t otherwise be clear to many.

Would someone, in all seriousness, complain about the response?

Form1ess · 17/08/2023 08:08

Rudderneck The band Hole weren't family friendly- many of the songs are about rape, violence and how women are treated as 'holes'. It's an angry name, I don't see the equivalence with the drag act at all, it's almost the opposite.
