'Cheryl has promised to "bring the glamour" to the kitchen but has also been "cooking my little Essex bum off" in preparation.
She added like every Essex girl she is a lover of a chippy at the end of a night out and always had a hankering for a battered sausage or saveloy.'

Celebrity MasterChef: Cheryl Hole on why LGBTQ+ representation is important

The drag star says being on Celebrity MasterChef is a way to have voices of the LGBTQ+ community heard.

Why have drag queens become the only visible way in which "LGBTQ" representation can happen? They are a part of the subculture, no doubt, but they aren't representative of gay men, or lesbians, or bisexual people, or trans people. And that's before you get into the misogynistic depictions of women that are involved.

drhf · 16/08/2023 09:59

Sam Fox is also appearing in Celebrity MasterChef.

But of course a middle aged lesbian, however beautiful, even one who has spoken publicly about how difficult she found it to acknowledge her own orientation, is much less exciting and glamorous than a drag queen.

Especially a drag queen whose stage name is misogynistic and offensive to the person whose image is being pastiched, and whose act prominently features misogynistic stereotypes.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 16/08/2023 09:59

I noted that the BBC Breakfast interview yesterday referred only to 'Cheryl'. No 'Hole'.

So they know. They just don't care.

Timefordrama · 16/08/2023 10:22

Sunlight may well reach into the homes of people watching who would never have realised just how misogynistic drag is. Not a bad thing if it does happen.

ArabeIIaKarenScott · 16/08/2023 10:28

Audiences are thrilled to have Cheryl represent lesbians and bisexual women.

TBH I didn't get what his name was a play on, I just thought it was vulgar. Is it a play on a real woman's name? Because that's fucking repulsive, if so.

I see the BBC didn't bother to give space to anyone giving a rebuttal, like pointing out the "bans" on drag are only to stop them performing or maybe reading to children.

Jellycats4life · 16/08/2023 10:30

Dining out on misogyny and tired Essex stereotypes. Zzz.

RealityFan · 16/08/2023 10:44

In any other demeaning situation, Cheryl Cole would sue re this person and bastardisation of her name.

In any other situation. Another example of a free pass for trans.

CurlewKate · 16/08/2023 10:50

Thought people might like to see the reply I got from the BBC to my complaint.
"We’re sorry our previous reply didn’t address your concerns and that you remain unhappy about the drag artist Cheryl Hole featuring on the show because of her name.

Celebrity MasterChef has a tradition of inviting a variety of celebrities onto the show and we don’t believe this choice was different, with a great array of contestants taking part.

The drag name is based on the artist Cheryl, formerly known as Cheryl Cole. Cheryl Hole has been quoted as saying, “My drag name comes from the icon and Geordie princess Cheryl Cole. Cheryl have inspired so much of my life” which we don’t agree would be interpreted by the majority as^^ misogynist. Instead, it’s cheeky play on words which could be explained as such in a family setting and so we saw no reason to exclude her from the show."

I'm not clear exactly what use of the word "hole" in this context could be explained in a family setting.....

RealityFan · 16/08/2023 10:53

Three guaranteed things in life.
Death.
Taxes.
BBC ignoring complaints.

Saucery · 16/08/2023 10:54

Could have had Pole, Stole (as in fur), Mole, Soul…….but no. He had to go for the sexually reductive Hole.

JellySaurus · 16/08/2023 10:54

Seeing as I have no idea who Cheryl Cole is, it never occurred to me that the stage name was any sort of 'homage'. I read it as a play on 'real hole'. So, yes, I do find it offensively misogynistic.

Toseland · 16/08/2023 10:57

She said: "We're just individuals wanting to live our lives and doing no harm and causing no grievances to anybody, so I don't understand why people take such an issue to us as a community."
What a load of shite - no, you are a HE, making lots of money by taking the piss out of women.
Dressing up and mocking any other group would be considered offensive.
You are making 'men in dresses' normal, rather than something we are naturally, rightly wary of.
You are insulting as a face of LGB people.
You are degrading women and Essex girls and should not be on TV.
I'm sick of seeing drag everywhere it makes me so angry.

RoseslnTheHospital · 16/08/2023 10:57

I'd like to see that BBC complaints minion try to explain to some small children where the surname Hole comes from and why it's a "cheeky play on words". What a load of nonsense!

Clymene · 16/08/2023 11:01

They had a drag queen on last year too. It's so fucking boring.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 16/08/2023 11:02

There was a DQ on celebrity masterchef last year as well

exceptionally irritating that they referred to them as she all the time but nowhere as irritating as the entire “ooooooh they fancy John torode & John secretly fancies them back” narrative that went out

D1nopawus · 16/08/2023 11:28

I’ve assumed for a while to be honest that a Drag person is a requirement for BBC “celebrity” shows. What I’ve yet to work out as if they have their own category or a included within the women category.

Still gotta preserve the status of white men, I guess.

GrandmaMazur · 16/08/2023 11:34

Masterchef has had several MtF trans people and drag acts over the last few years including the ex-boxing manager who had admitted to trying to strangle his wife.

There is/was a DJ on it this year I’ve never heard of who John Torode refers to as she but who looks, dresses and very much behaves like a he. It’s very tedious. And not least doesn’t seem particularly representative of UK demographics.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2023 11:35

Seeing as I have no idea who Cheryl Cole is

She was in Girls Aloud, married a footballer, Ashley Cole.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 16/08/2023 11:39

@D1nopawus im amazed that wasn’t a DW on this years strictly

BabyStopCryin · 16/08/2023 11:51

Why doesn’t the man come in, minus the ‘act’ and cook. Actors come onto the show and don’t feel the need to pretend to be Dr Who or Mr Tumble (or whatever).

Theeyeballsinthesky · 16/08/2023 11:52

I know - no one else comes in “in character”

CurlewKate · 16/08/2023 11:52

When I made my complaint I made it very clear that it was the name I objected to. The first response I got was basically a history of drag. I clarified my complaint-to be told that the name was a cheeky play on words entirely suitable for a family audience. I don't get a 3rd go!

ArabeIIaKarenScott · 16/08/2023 11:56

'The drag name is based on the artist Cheryl, formerly known as Cheryl Cole. Cheryl Hole has been quoted as saying, “My drag name comes from the icon and Geordie princess Cheryl Cole. A 'cheeky' play on words? How is it 'cheeky'? What is the pun referring to, so that I can explain it 'in a family setting'.

I want these fuckers to spell it out.
