Feminism: Sex and gender discussions
Froodwithatowel · 12/08/2023 22:11

The twitter linked video above says a great deal. Mostly a need to shout, rant and shock, with an audience then.

To try and bluster away from this highly needy and concerning behaviour by shouting 'homophobia' is about as helpful as shouting 'squirrel'. I've managed to be LGB for five decades without lobbing a single tampon, it really can be done.

ArabeIIaScott · 12/08/2023 22:39

Not even a little game of tampon tennis, Frood? Mooncup & ball catching? You're clearly doing it all wrong.

Froodwithatowel · 12/08/2023 22:43

I know. Between not lobbing tampons and not doing men, it's no wonder I've been kicked out of Pride.

HotSince82 · 12/08/2023 22:48

Noah! Get the boat...

Lightningspeed · 12/08/2023 22:48

I just think the female sex has just lost, we made progress, now it's just gone. Sad

I'm thinking we should put some people “back in the closet". Their behavior is not enough for polite society. And yes polite society is still important.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 12/08/2023 22:59

There is nothing left for this cult than to knit fake-gina's and scare children by throwing joke shop stained tampons at kids. What a bunch of cunts.

ThereIbledit · 12/08/2023 23:01

@oneleggedspider
There was a warning given about periods and sensitive subject matter before this performer started. Why would you hang around for it, with your kids, and then get offended and complain?

This is how I feel. For all that it's not to my taste and I could do without the "anybody can get a period" rhetoric, there was a clear fair warning. The tampons were wrapped, the blood on stage was fake. Anybody who stayed kinda only had themselves to blame.

@HateLongCovid

I don't think they should have performed at all. It's just gross! Why would anyone find it funny?

I think it was supposed to be thought provoking. And whilst I think the performer has no talent and the performance definitely wasn't to my taste, I will defend the right of the arts to put on performances that aren't to my taste.

MotherEarthisaTerf · 12/08/2023 23:54

@ThereIbledit

It's not appropriate to do a provocative talk on periods in front of young children. Smearing "blood" on your clothing and wearing "dirty" sanitary towels.

Some parents let their 6 year old boys play grand theft auto. Doesnt mean the makers dont have a responsibility to advertise it appropriately, set an official age limit and social workers consider it a safe guarding risk (presumably, I'm not actually sure)

Ereshkigalangcleg · 13/08/2023 00:47

It's all a bit Vulva from Spaced, really.

PandaExpress · 13/08/2023 02:06

These parents need to stop offering their kids up to groomers. What did they expect?

More luxury belief garbage from the idle upper class twits. Honestly, it's so boring, and Leigh Bowery did all this and more thirty years ago.

So I looked him up and found this.

In a signature performance, he would appear on stage in outlandish drag or other costume, looking huge. He would sing and dance about. Then suddenly, much to the audience's surprise, he would drop onto his back and simulate giving birth to a petite and naked young woman, who was his friend, assistant and later wife”.

Sarah Vine has referenced the tampon event in her column but seems to have failed to spot that the performer was female, not a transwoman.

TheClogLady · 13/08/2023 13:48

Protesting capitalism by buying loads of a commercial product and then wasting loads of said product by chucking it about in a performance seems a bit, well, artistically unsuccessful, to say the least.

And I have Goldsmiths College Arts Degree (so I’ve seen a lot of shite performance art).

TheClogLady · 13/08/2023 13:50

*sigh

I loved Leigh. Drag was interesting then - and not pretending to be anything but exclusively for adults only.

It's all backwards, too.

A performance trying to draw attention to the stigma of period, shame surrounding it, capitalist attitudes etc (VAT on period pants, anyone?) might be interesting. But then, your audience is not children.

Children, especially young girls, will not have any understanding of irony or expressive exaggeration. You'll be 'protesting' to beings who have no understanding or involvement in creating or perpetuating stigma. They're far more likely to be freaked out, and the performer is far more likely to actually instill fear/horror/shame in them than 'educate' them out of it.

It's just very, very dim.

ArabeIIaScott · 13/08/2023 14:18

I'd like to post a bit of good artwork that uses blood. Just to counter the crap.

Ana Mendiata, wonderful artist, quite probably pushed out of a window to her death by her husband.

It's much the kind of thing you find in the festivals, you wouldn't believe some of the batshit wankery that gets put on by solo performers as 'art'. Evening slot at an adults' only show, fine. Probably will get good reviews, the weird shit usually does.

But in an open venue with kids around? Then the wankery and attention seeking needs putting back in its box. I always thought shame was a bad thing and that open mindedness would improve society - now I'm realising through hard experience that society HAS to have boundaries and use shame to keep those few with no boundaries at all and no capacity to keep the social contract from making society a really grotty, unpleasant and grubby place for everyone.

ArabeIIaScott · 13/08/2023 14:23

the erosion and breaking down of boundaries leads to both inappropriate, thoughtless mismatches between audience and artist, and shit art because nobody is willing to 'judge' anything.

My granddaughter was devasted to have leaked during a lesson at school not so long ago. She wouldn't go to the toilet as... yep, you've guessed it, the boys have access and try to humiliate or photograph the girls.

WTF is wrong with councils promoting this?

Just what I was thinking! What's so edgy and boundary-breaking about performing exaggerated shit that was being parodied 20 years ago?

Try 50 years ago, at least. There was a fair bit of exploration of taboos around periods at that point.

Germane Greer wrote eloquently and provocatively on the subject in the Female Eunuch.

But of course, these were old feminists of the old fashioned cunty type, who weren't alive to the miraculous power of non binary queerness.

HootyMcBooby76 · 14/08/2023 13:58

For a group of people who constantly say that sex/gender is not about biology or biological functions, they sure as heck go on a LOT about them don't they?
WHAT is the obsession from this community with periods, sanitary products, breastfeeding, menstrual cycles etc?

They never shut up about it.

Almost an unhealthy interest one might say. I wonder why that is.

There used to be a word for that.

From that Dylan creation handing out tampons, to other TW being spokepeople for tampon companies, to stories of TW re-purposing used sanitary products (!), to TW taking hormones to lactate (there is one on Youtube right now documenting his "progress" with a lactation regimen - not intending to feed a child per se (as he doesn't have one), but wants to "donate" his breast "milk" etc, to other fascination with female biological functions.

Yes, what is that word I'm looking for?..........
