British Army invites male to talk about his 'lived experience' as a woman

The co-chair of the Army Servicewomen's Network tweeted out some photos of a Women in Leadership event yesterday.

Cue many women pointing out the elephant in the room, so to speak, in the last photo of the Lived Experience Panel:

Perhaps a subtle act of protest?

We hear constantly that transwomen (occasionally extended to all trans people) as a group have a terribly difficult time, face all kinds of legal and social and logistical obstacles, and are the most marginalized and exploited group. Women as a group are allegedly relatively privileged and should be kind, budge up, move over, and cede all spaces and accommodations in consideration of the far more dire situation of transwomen. SO - why on EARTH would someone who's had significant actual experience of being a transwoman in the Forces - and is now in a position to advocate and possibly drive policy change - talk about the experience of being there as a woman, even if they could? Why not highlight the unique challenges to transwomen? I'd be happy to listen to that, and would probably learn something.

Also they need to "lady" better - don't sit like that wearing a skirt.

Quite striking when you compare their pose to the other panel members sitting with crossed legs. Must have been bloody frustrating for those women to sit quietly and pretend to listen.

If the Russkis can over the channel tomorrow they would be in Whitehall by lunchtime. Incorrect use of pronouns and various micro aggressions would lead to hissy fits, falling out and not fighting the invader.

ArabeIIaScott · 11/08/2023 10:07

Well, crikey. A picture tells us so much.

How do we all feel about manspreading these days, ladies?

Childrenofthestones · 11/08/2023 12:22

This will be playing on a loop in barracks all over China and Russia 🙄

Looking forwards to reading about Ukrainian frontline soldiers and generals who've transed.

What? There aren't any? Or the few that there are have been expected to assume roles as per natal birth?

Quelle suprise.

Ditto US armed forces, despite Uncle Joe having no issues with men IDing as women to access women's sport and prisons and addressing Dylan Mulvaney as a woman, all US military personnel are categorised as, and will fight as, how they were born.

In the real world, let's brew a cuppa and listen to this joker.

That's not correct about the US Military at least.

Change to policy allows transgender Soldiers to serve openly

Transgender personnel and individuals with gender dysphoria who can meet the Army's standards for military service can now serve openly.

I am sorry to say I snorted at that photo.

Whereas I did a really loud laugh at work when I read Tinsel’s comment about it!

That really is one of those “picture speaks a thousand words” photos.

I'm sure I read that push come to shove, you'll go from pretending in your chosen gender when no war is on, to being obligated to fight as your natal sex.

Maybe only applies to conscription or invasion.

I've seen that smug expression before on men who know they are taking the piss but are totally sure of getting away with it. It's enraging.

Sums it up.

I was hoping that Hannah was a secret terf. But switching off replies makes me think not.

I was surprised by her twitter bio, “mummy, wife, army officer” and briefly wondered whether her spouse’s bio reads “daddy, husband, army officer”. I’d guess not.

BabyStopCryin · 11/08/2023 13:47

If they’d done a talk on their experience of being trans in the army then that’s something I’d rather miss to be honest, but what does this person know about having periods, pregnancy, sexism, sexual harassment and abuse… anywhere exactly? I’d love to have heard what their ‘experiences ’ are exactly?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/08/2023 13:52

Surely it’s men who need to sit and listen to someone talk about being a transwoman in the army, not women.

You are correct @RealityFan

Hannah is NOT a secret TERF. If Hannah thinks something will get her promoted or an OBE, that’s what Hannah will do.

There is not much space in the MOD for TERFs. All the space for the transwomen, a little bit for the transmen. Of course, just being in the army makes servicewoman non binary as the clothes are men’s.

e.g. shirt, combat, men’s.

Of course, the big project to make the clothing gender neutral resulted in this label becoming “shirt, combat”. The cut and fit did not change so much.

What happens if you start asking them probing questions thay only a woman could really answer? Eg... how do you think the expectations family, teachers and peers placed on you as a girl (not) when you were growing up shaped your career plans? Presumably they'll answer it, but might it help peak a few when they realise how ludicrous it is? Ive never been present in a panel like this, so never had the opportunity to try it!

The answer to that is that you’re being transphobic to assume every woman had a cis girlhood.
Bigot!

Ah yes, I didn't think of that, so I most certainly am the worst kind of bigot!

Lord Dannatt has stated:

Lord Dannatt, the former head of the Army, said that the event at Sandhurst had tried to be “progressive” by inviting a person from the trans community onto the panel.
“They have tried to be as progressive and inclusive as they can and by having someone who’s transitioned to being a woman, I think that that’s a good way of reflecting all dimensions of female point of view,” he told The Telegraph.

So there. 'Female' is now also just a feeling floating inside someone's brain and nothing to do with the sex of the body.
