This shows the arrest of a teenage autistic girl by about 5 police officers. From what I can make out it is for a 'hate' crime. She apparently said a police officer was a Lesbian. Her Nan is a lesbian - that police officer is like my Nan.

I cannot comprehend the mindset of these officers.

No, it was indeed WYP.

The statement from West Yorkshire police has enraged me further. It says that people shouldn't rush to conclusions based on social media reports, but we've all seen the video - it's impossible to deny what's happening there. They seem to have had absolutely no concept of the vulnerability of this girl and her need to be treated with gentleness and kindness. Or, who knows? Perhaps they did understand that. Perhaps they are bullies who take pleasure in terrifying a young girl but are too scared to confront real criminals.

But you don't need to speculate. You've watched the video.
But I can speculate on what she was arrested for. That hasn't been established yet - I can only assume it was a s5 POA - rightly or wrongly.

Or do you know of what the offence is she was arrested for.....?

You were in agreement, for once, with the rest of us. Why didn't you just take the win?

Why did you then have to go off into the realm of she must have done something to warrant the police reaction. Because even if You didn't think that's what you were doing that's exactly how it comes across in your posts.

I have no idea what she was eventually arrested for, but I do have personal experience of west yorkshire police intimidating a 16 year old autistic girl as I was the one having to tell them they were out of order, she was autistic and to back off. So i will admit I'm biased here with regard this police force.

My police force however are the apple of my eye currently so I'm not anti police, but what's on that video is not right regardless of the offence.

WILTYjim · 10/08/2023 15:44

Six police officers came to arrest me for allegedly posting “they really do” on an instagram post which said “good things take time”.

I don’t even have an instagram account and I’m a fat middle aged woman. Six of them in my house for an allegation they have not ever even begun to substantiate. Necessity to arrest and reasonable belief, my arse. Bullying lickspittles.

I could not have less respect for an organisation.

I am working with other women in the same situation to find appropriate expert witnesses and negotiate lower costs but it is expensive to be wrongly accused of crimes in the UK and legal aid is a joke. Not as much of a joke as the police though.

BreadInCaptivity · 10/08/2023 15:50

The WYP statement says she was arrested on suspicion of a homophobic public order offence.

Frankly I don't care what she said.

Again, what public interest was served by arresting her?

She was drunk and mouthy in her own home. The response was totally disproportionate.

As I posted below I'm shocked that not a single one of those officers thought to step back and think WTF are we trying to achieve here? What's the public benefit/risk of arresting/not arresting her?

PatatiPatatras · 10/08/2023 15:55

Please don't tell me the police think its homophobic to be called a lesbian. With the actual correct word not a negative connotation slang...

IcakethereforeIam · 10/08/2023 15:55

I hope, in reality, Nanna Julie is nothing like that WPC.

Eh? What on earth were they thinking you meant?

PronounssheRa · 10/08/2023 16:05

The WYP statement says she was arrested on suspicion of a homophobic public order offence.

And that does appear to confirm there was not 'more to it'. If she had been violent the statement would have said so.

I'm idly wondering whether police officers can be reported for hate incidents, because the girl is covered by a hate crime strand

I had four police officers the other day at mine because I committed the heinous crime of...

Answering my doorbell when it rang!

the police actually worked in my favour in the end but I'm convinced there must be no actual crime going on where I live right now!

Iranoutofmonikers · 10/08/2023 16:23

I am amazed at people seeing 4 police officers at a time. I did recently see a couple parked up outside a local restaurant (posh drug dealing establishment), but they didn't stay long and didn't appear to do or say anything while they were there.
We don't usually see any at all unless they are whizzing past at top speed on the main road.

Of course they can. The police are subject to the law just like everyone else.

Honestly they are like buses, none for ages then they all turn up at once.

mrshoho · 10/08/2023 16:34

FFS. What is the world coming to? Shame on the police. They have seriously lost their way. This is not protecting the public. The officers were not in any danger. They carried on making this girl more distressed. The mother was calmly explaining. What an embarrassment to policing.

How could saying a female looked like a lesbian like her nana be taken as a “homophobic public order offence”?

It's a fecking compliment.
Im a middle -aged Lesbian and look fantastic!

LarkLane · 10/08/2023 16:41

Well, I do hope that their bodycams were switched on.
And if they weren't, then I'd be wanting to know why, if I were that young girl's legal representative.

LarkLane · 10/08/2023 16:44

Ah, I see WYP are saying that it is on bodycam.

Soubriquet · 10/08/2023 16:48

We had an incident this week in the town centre where a man was mown down by a mobility scooter. Not the normal types but the ones that look like miniature cars but can still go where pedestrians go.

4 police cars and two ambulances showed up.

Someone had their house broken into not too long ago, and was then verbally harassed. No police because they didn’t have any spare staff

I'm not really here to win anything.

I'm not saying that 'she must have done something to warrant the police action' quite the opposite in fact. I have said that what the police did is wrong - and if I was there it wouldn't bother me being called a name and it would have been dealt with differently.

It appears that she was a vulnerable missing from home who has been found and brought back home.

That would be it for me - the fact that she has been returned to her family safe and well. Now move on to the next job. She can call me all the names under the sun - I have more important things to do, close the door and walk away. if her parents want to tell her off for calling me names, then that's up to them. But its done in the family home by the family - not in custody.

I am just making a suggestion as to what the offence was that she was arrested for - and how/why the officer has concluded that offence has been committed.

I'm not saying its right or I agree with it.

Now the police have contacted SocialnServices because the girl was being 'aggressive'.

Why?? Meltdown is totally normal in autistic kids. West Yorkshire Police are a fucking joke.
As the autistic mum of 2 autistic kids this is fucking scary.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/08/2023 17:19

The process is the punishment

Ifeelsuchflutterings · 10/08/2023 17:22

If children with autism run away in the WYP area who are parents supposed to call now to help them?

If your child says something blunt or had a meltdown they may be arrested and you may be referred to social services

If they are physically disabled they may be handled with no due consideration for their disability

What are the police for when the public can no longer trust them to find missing children?
