This shows the arrest of a teenage autistic girl by about 5 police officers. From what I can make out it is for a 'hate' crime. She apparently said a police officer was a Lesbian. Her Nan is a lesbian - that police officer is like my Nan.

I cannot comprehend the mindset of these officers.

Quote from the girls mum

go back and watch the original video...my daughter was brought home by police..they said they brought her home to make sure she was safe. the officers never entered my home and told me my daughter WAS NOT under arrest. so I took my daughter out of the officers arms (she was gripping her so tight her arms had gone bright red due to lack of bloodflow) and guided her upstairs. As she was walking upstairs, bearing in mind the officer is still OUTSIDE my home my daughter turned to me and said "I think she's a lesbian like nanna julie"..and with that, the officer lunged at me, assaulting me while I had my back turned, and tried to grip my daughter. my daughter was so scared she ran inside the cupboard and made herself as small as she could. she repeatedly told the officer sorry and was crying saying she didn't do anything wrong. you see with autism she has no filter and is quite literally LITERAL in everything she says and does. this is the main reason she is misunderstood. my daughter was not aggressive, and did not raise her voice. instead she punched herself in the head several times due to the officer staring at her through gritted teeth and clenched fists. that officer was intimidating my child. she also never cautioned my daughter and never placed her under arrest, so it was both unlawful and illegal what that officer did. and not only that, but I also explained my daughter has severe scoliosis and a twisted spine, but it didn't stop

PAH!

Wasn't their fault ... of course.

Dear God, wonder what happened to the poor girl before they brought her home Sad

Felix125 · 10/08/2023 09:59

Why was she suddenly on the floor outside? Was she forced to the ground by officers, or did she go to the floor for other reasons (trip, fall, stumble)

What should the police do though if a person with disabilities refuses to move when they are under arrest?

They're trained to deal with that. This was a small girl, it's incredibly difficult to believe that the only way they could deal with her was by pulling on her arms when they had just been told she had scoliosis and that that would cause her extreme pain.

yourhairiswinterfire · 10/08/2023 14:11

West Yorkshire Police takes its responsibilities around the welfare of young people taken into custody and around neurodiversity very seriously

Might want to let Officer 'I Don't Care' know about that then Hmm

Moonberri · 10/08/2023 14:13

Does released on bail mean that they have arrested or charged her for an offence?

Florissante · 10/08/2023 14:14

Does released on bail mean that they have arrested or charged her for an offence?

I think so. Isn't that what bail is about? That someone has been charged with a crime but they have been released until they appear in court?

DiabolicalFinial · 10/08/2023 14:17

How could saying a female looked like a lesbian like her nana be taken as a “homophobic public order offence”?

Moonberri · 10/08/2023 14:13

Usually released pending further enquiries. She’ll need to go back at a later date to be told whether or not they’re taking the matter further.

How could saying a female looked like a lesbian like her nana be taken as a “homophobic public order offence”?

And in the girls own home - how were the public affected?

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 10/08/2023 14:25

Released on bail? So they’ve had money off this family because officer sulky didn’t like the way a girl spoke to her?

Felix125 · 10/08/2023 14:27

BernardBlacksMolluscs
No money is involved with bail in the UK

Florissante · 10/08/2023 14:33

I don't believe that the financial aspects of bail have anything to do with the police.

Felix125 · 10/08/2023 14:41

Boiledbeetle
But you don't need to speculate. You've watched the video.
But I can speculate on what she was arrested for. That hasn't been established yet - I can only assume it was a s5 POA - rightly or wrongly.

Or do you know of what the offence is she was arrested for.....?

BCCoach
s5 POA can be committed if the person is in a private dwelling, but the affected person is in public - ie outside.

Florissante
is no reason to post stupid and irrelevant comments.
Well, people are saying that i have no right to post on this forum.
But I do - as it is a public forum and I have just as much right as anyone else to post.

NotBadConsidering
Exactly. You’re trying to give the officer justification by making out their perception could have seen it a certain way.
I am not justifying her actions at all - and i have said that they are wrong.
I am suggesting what she may have been arrested for and why she was arrested for that offence.

So yes being pulled for doing 69 in a 70 is wrong.

But the reason why they were pulled is for speeding. The fact that they were not speeding doesn't alter the reason why they were pulled over in the first place.

WYP statement

So are they going to release the evidence they allege that they have that exonerates them? Or just leave us to assume that the brutal footage where a disabled child is dragged out of her house is the whole story?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/08/2023 15:13

They don't care whether we think that. They only care that they can get away with it by paying lip service.

ArabeIIaScott · 10/08/2023 15:15

"I think she's a lesbian like nanna julie"

Maybe we've got this all wrong and the offense was actually comparing a police officer to Nanna Julie.

People don't take Nannaphobic crime seriously enough.

GailBlancheViola · 10/08/2023 15:24

JFC, if today's police officers find baldy and looks like my Nana Julie who is a lesbian abusive, offensive or insulting then they are not fit for office. God only knows how they'd have coped with the language directed at Police in days gone by, if they cannot handle words then how do they expect these fainting flowers to handle actual, real full on violence in the course of their work?

I wouldn't want those numpties in charge of a fucking garden gnome never mind law and order on the streets.

BreadInCaptivity · 10/08/2023 15:29

What I can't fathom is why none of these officers took time to reflect and think - what the hell are we doing?

Is protecting the public best served by 7 of us dragging a teen autistic child from her home because one of us was told she looks like a lesbian?

Is there anything better we could be doing right now than this?

Why don't we try and re-escalate this situation rather than arrest her so we can get on with the job of doing actual policing rather than thought crime policing?

BreadInCaptivity · 10/08/2023 15:30

*de-escalate

CaptainSeven · 10/08/2023 15:30

You know when I was growing up we used to say

"Sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me"

Obviously name calling is hurtful - this saying was designed to build resilience and a shield around you. Say if often enough and you start to believe it.

The police officer who was offended by girls words could do well to get some resilience, some back bone.

The fact that the police officer reminded the girl of Nana Julie might have helped bring her home.

I really don't understand how anyone can claim the girl's words were homophobic.

I suppose the lesson here is everyone had to watch what they say around WYP. That doesn't feel very safe or policing by consent.

Gilmorehill · 10/08/2023 15:31

I have good friends and family who are/were in the police so it is painful for me to say this - but I am starting to hate the police. Treating victims of child grooming as prostitutes, assaulting women at the Sarah Everard vigil, failing to treat threats against 'TERFs' seriously and now this.

Felix125 · 10/08/2023 15:31

BreadInCaptivity
Completely agree with you.

CaptainSeven · 10/08/2023 15:35

Actually I think I might have got the police forces involved muddled up. You know who I mean. The ones who arrested the autistic girl.
