This shows the arrest of a teenage autistic girl by about 5 police officers. From what I can make out it is for a 'hate' crime. She apparently said a police officer was a Lesbian. Her Nan is a lesbian - that police officer is like my Nan.

I cannot comprehend the mindset of these officers.

I would like to see what happened prior to this. We only have the mum saying she called her a lesbian. Did she assault the officer outside and then called her a lesbian ? There really must be more to this to warrent 5 police going in. ..

If it is as on the face of it it's dreadful.

She was released without charge so its highly unlikely she assaulted an officer

Moonberri · 10/08/2023 11:27

Section 5 says "threatening or abusive words or acts". How is saying that someone looks like your Nan who is a lesbian threatening or abusive? It isn't.

Well exactly. That's why she was released without charge.

This is very upsetting to watch. I hope that there are consequences.

Commenting that someone looks like their Nan who is a lesbian, is NOT a hate crime.

Gilmorehill · 10/08/2023 12:28

My friend is a police officer and she told me she's been called all kinds of names. They learn to ignore it.
I couldn't believe my ears when the mum said her child was autistic and was told they didn't care. Wtaf.
I have a dd of the same age. I keep thinking of how distressed that poor child was. I hope those involved are dealt with.

The process is the punishment.

WYP are being encouraged to get in more reports of hate crime.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-63893015

'Ms Lowe told BBC Radio Leeds the force had more work to do to ensure people felt able to report hate crime.
"I know that the system is not always working for all of us and that's the case for all protected characteristics and we need to get better at it," she said.'

Alison Lowe - Deputy Mayor West Yorkshire

Hate crime: West Yorkshire Police urged to improve report handling

West Yorkshire Police says more than 11,000 hate crimes were recorded in the past year.

That poor child is likely to be left in terror of anyone in police uniform. It is such an abuse of power.

Iranoutofmonikers · 10/08/2023 12:52

How to improve your hate crime statistics:
Change the definition of a hate crime to include every possible perceived slight.
Spend lots of your funding on setting up new reporting phone lines especially for hate crimes.
Job done.

The only thing that was needed was for the officer to act like a grown-up and completely ignore the remark.

I agree - and i have said as such.
And I am speculating - that's why I am saying, 'probably'

But you don't need to speculate. You've watched the video. Until there is further additional information we are at the say what you see stage.

And on the footage ALONE regardless of what led to it (and let's be honest it's not as if she's just been on a violent stabbing spree is it) an autistic child with a painful illness as well was overwhelmed, her safe space was violated she was ganged up on and manhandled by the police whilst the woman officer who was obviously the catalyst of this, behaved in the video like a arse.

You are your own worst enemy at times Felix.

You should have stopped at I agree.

Don't forget to congratulate yourself on the wholly unexpected uptick in reports.

Magenta82 · 10/08/2023 13:05

It's interesting that the police haven't released a statement yet. I wonder if they are scrabbling behind the scenes.

And sex, obvs.

And race.
And sexuality if that means lesbians (with XX chromosomes). (Remember the City of London Police and the lesbians on chairs).

Iranoutofmonikers · 10/08/2023 13:10

If the lesbian is a female member of the public that is.

It will probably be s5 POA

If someone finds the remark insulting, then it will fall into this category.
So in this case - she finds being called a lesbian, insulting.

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest being called similar comments. But if she is insulted by it - then it doesn't make it right.

This took place in a dwelling, which is a statutory defence against s5 POA as the police well know. There was never any intention to charge this girl, the arrest IS the punishment.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 10/08/2023 13:32

from WYP

We are fully reviewing the circumstances of this incident and ask that people avoid reaching any conclusions about it solely on the basis of the social media video

yeah, I definitely think I can trust what WYP tell me and shouldn’t look at other sources 🤡

BorgQueen · 10/08/2023 13:34

My god how horrific.
That Police Woman is vile, an utter disgrace. Doesn’t understand autism at all, doesn’t care. I hope they sue the arse off WYP.

BCCoach · 10/08/2023 13:41

Just to further refute the speculation that the girl could have been committing an s.5 offence:

“An offence under this section may be committed in a public or a private place, except that no offence is committed where the words or behaviour are used, or the writing, sign or other visible representation is displayed, by a person inside a dwelling and the other person is also inside that or another dwelling.”
