This shows the arrest of a teenage autistic girl by about 5 police officers. From what I can make out it is for a 'hate' crime. She apparently said a police officer was a Lesbian. Her Nan is a lesbian - that police officer is like my Nan.

I cannot comprehend the mindset of these officers.

ArabellaScott I agree. However she seems to do a lot of training. So she's letting other people under her leadership know that it's acceptable to carry on like this.

Imagine a teacher tweeting about a vulnerable 14 year old girl in her care in this way..

What a sanctimonious, callous idiot!!! It would have been very easy to change details and wait a bit so it wasn't outing. She needs sacked. Bloody unbelievable.

Presumably this is what "bring your whole self to work" looks like at WYP?
No need for professional standards, no sense of safeguarding or confidentiality for a 14 year old. Just material for a police officer to use on their twitter promoting LGBT issues. Presumably the tax payer are also paying for this officer's regular attendance / expenses at conferences, meetings, pride events.
No wonder they don't have time to solve 85% of burglaries. 🙄

Does anyone have a link to the Burchill article? My phone won't let me look at the archived one.

One thing which strikes me about Madden is that she seems keen to show that she supports lesbians, especially with her grossly unprofessional guff about the teenaged prisoner.

I don't suppose it's at all common for senior officers to visit petty offenders in the cells, to make sure they're OK.

She's not showing that she's treating all without fear or favour; with her comments about her officer (which may be defamatory to the teenaged victim) she is saying that she will support her tribe, no matter what.

Is she as solicitous towards heterosexual girls in custody? Men?

Good article. Thanks.

Harry Miller now, for the Critic. He's comparing what WYP did to kidnapping. I think gardens can be considered public spaces for POA. Don't know if that's 'from' a garden rather than 'within' one though. It's arguably beside the point as the girl said and did nothing wrong (as action discontinued). I don't believe WPC Nan behaved at all reasonably, fwtw.

Call it kidnap | Harry Miller | The Critic Magazine

Last Friday night, I had the novel experience of being cut off during a live TalkTV interview by the programme’s host, Andre Walker, who had invited me on to comment on the arrest by West Yorkshire…

If someone calls someone a black bastard what crime is being committed? If someone called some a lesbian what crime is being committed?

First is racism, second is a judgement/statement of someone's sexuality.

If they said "lesbian bitch" then it would be homophobic.

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 15/08/2023 20:50

I see that weird poster never answered the question of how she know the policewoman is part of the LGBTQ community. Did she.. shock...horror.. made an assumption based on her looks? Is the police knocking on her door?

It is not a crime to be racist, homophobic or judgmental. You can believe anything you want.

In most cases, it is legal to express those views, even if others find them
offensive.

The threshold at which expressing this sort of view becomes criminal is higher than the police seem to understand- which is why we keep seeing these high profile incidents of people being arrested but not charged. The CPS seem to have retained some grasp of reality and the actual law. The police? Not so much.

Yes, apparently it’s fine to think a woman with short hair is a lesbian but, if you say that out-loud, it’s also ok for 7 police to arrest you 🙄

Wondered what Thom Yorke was up to lately.

So all of the cops who have been prosecuted or lost their jobs by sending such 'offensive' tweets in Whats App groups - should they keep their jobs?

There's a gap between losing your job and illegal.

I can lose my job if I bring the company into disrepute by saying something inappropriate on twitter whilst linking my profile to the company I work for.

That doesn't necessarily mean I can be arrested for it. What I said might not be illegal. But it might be sackable.

I'm not sure why you seem unclear on the law in this area? Or are appearing to defend some very indefensible comments.

You missed that she said “in most cases”.

It’s reasonable to expect higher standards from certain professions. I’m a teacher and would expect to be (rightly) disciplined or dismissed for such behaviour.

BezMills · 16/08/2023 10:15

We rightly expect very high professional standards from our Police officers when they are on duty. They are held to those standards by their colleagues, and if necessary, the professional and statutory bodies governing the police forces of the UK.

It is also my understanding that their superiors also take an interest in what they do even when not on duty, lest they bring the force into disrepute.

That's not even unusual, every HCP in the land has the same (and they don't generally get to spray obnoxious members of the public with incapacitatant, sadly)

GailBlancheViola · 16/08/2023 10:36

You forgotten @Felix125 that the Police take an oath to be neutral and to Police without fear or favour?

They absolutely should have been sacked for those WhatsApp groups and messages they proved that those officers were not neutral and that they could not Police without fear or favour.

Of course Police officers are held to higher standards than Joe Public, they have power vested in them by that self same public.

This is not difficult to comprehend.

GailBlancheViola · 16/08/2023 10:38

And yes they were quite rightly prosecuted.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 16/08/2023 10:54

Lots of people have jobs with very clear professional standards and would expect to lose their jobs if they expressed views that breached those standards.
