This shows the arrest of a teenage autistic girl by about 5 police officers. From what I can make out it is for a 'hate' crime. She apparently said a police officer was a Lesbian. Her Nan is a lesbian - that police officer is like my Nan.

I cannot comprehend the mindset of these officers.

Pack in.

There is NOTHING in that video to indicate anything other than an overwhelmed child.

If it takes 5 officers to handle that they are not fit for purpose and should be sacked.

Sorry - quote function fail that was to Aaron

Someone on twitter said the police woman looks like Conan O'Brian and now I can't unsee it.

I'll report myself for hate speech...

I have no idea why they couldn't have written down a note in their little notebooks and picked up the matter in the morning when she was sober and not in such a state.

Either they could have attended the house or asked her to come in voluntarily. What on earth was she dragged down to the station for, when she was already safe in her own house in the care of her Mother?

What possible good did that do, except a vindictive Punishment By Procedure?

which is make no mistake, exactly what this is. A weak move by a weak person, who lost their shit over nothing and abused their power.

This! So much this!

My eldest (a boy) had a terrible time when puberty hit as it made his autistic meltdowns seem really scary (he went from little boy to over 6 ft within a single summer). We had police involvement three times and they were truly excellent with him. The one time he was arrested and driven away from the family home they immediately made arrangements for my best (male) friend to be his approved adult and released him to stay overnight with said friend within an hour or two.

They then made arrangements for my son to attend a Youth Offending Team appointment, which wasn’t in the police station but in a neighbouring building, and the YOT referred him for Multi Systemic Therapy via the NHS (something we wouldn’t have been able to access without the police involvement).
He’s 23 now and has no other contact with the police (except when they returned a lost wallet!)

The police are actually able and capable of being really helpful with autistic teens, shame this particular bunch was so power-mad and ableist because any parent of an autistic child who has seen that footage will be thoroughly put off from contacting police themselves in future.

Which ultimately will be bad for the parents and autistic teens who would actually benefit from a little police involvement (as we did) and bad for society as a whole because being able to trust the police is part of a functioning, democratic society.

There were two meltdowns. The policewoman had a meltdown when she heard a vulnerable young person suggest that she might be a lesbian. A professional policeperson wouldn't have had that meltdown but, given that she did, her partner should have managed her down. But, rather than behave professionally, the original meltdown was encouraged. This led to the unfortunate young woman's meltdown which gave
WYP the excuse they needed to act like complete Twunts.

I disagree with this. Meltdowns in autism are uncontrollable and not a choice. The police officer chose to abuse her power and commit a hate crime against a vulnerable autistic youngster for the "crime" of saying a slightly awkward comment. Her power-tripping tantrum is not comparable to an actual meltdown.

Does this mean that Actual Nanna Lesbian also looks like Conan O’Brian and if so, can Actual Nanna L now sic the West Yorkshire Police on the twitter person?

The video looks horrific but it is heavily edited presumably by the woman who is holding the camera while mouthing off at the police.

We don't know what happened prior to this. We have no clue why the person is being arrested. Something led to 6 police officers attending which suggests they are expecting violence.

Hopefully the investigation will get to the bottom of it.

Mouthing off?

Have you been outside lately?

Iranoutofmonikers · 11/08/2023 09:59

It is high time EDI training in all organisations started with disability awareness. Something that seems to have dropped off the radar in recent years.

DysonSpheres · 11/08/2023 10:07

I can't t understand for the life of me why on earth this situation was permitted to escalate to this. The police look totally unprofessional, stupid and incompetent here. Reacting to a mild phrase like this is totally ridiculous and high-handed.

I used to do a job which sometimes involved stewarding after big events. I've been called all sorts of names and slurs by people drunk and off their heads. Frankly by some not drunk. Some bordered on the pale.

But we have to look past that especially if the person looks vulnerable. You have to help even whilst the person is sometimes cussing you out, and appreciate that half the time these people have no idea what they're doing.

Are you telling me the police are so thin-skinned that an inebriated teenager has gotten the better of them and they needed seven police officers to deal with words? Blimey, good job there wasn't an actual burglary or something happening then. I expect they'd struggle to cope.

Unbelievable. Ask any nurse or HCA what they get on a Friday or Saturday night. It's a wonder the police don't camp at the hospitals.

I hope they get royally sued. That BPO needs firing, she shouldn't be walking around thinking 'well at least I put the fear of god into her'

Whatthechicken · 11/08/2023 10:09

The other worrying thing is, the officers knew they were being filmed and still behaved like that.

Once upon a time in a land far away I had a drunk autistic meltdown and called several police officers that were trying to help me "a bunch of effing cnuts", I have no idea why I did that... I was drunk and mid-meltdown.

They said "well isn't that charming language for a young lady" or something and proceeded to delivery me home to my rather bewildered housemates.

Because... proportionality? It probably helped that I was (reasonably) well-spoken and formally dressed (had got raging drunk at a black-tie event) at the time.... but I don't know that.

That video was extremely distressing. I can't imagine what the girl could possibly have said to justify that response. They've responded as if she was a knife-welding maniac. It's rediculous.

Funnily enough when I watched it I thought they treated her far far worse than a " knife-welding maniac" because when my drunk, paranoid schizophrenic, build like a brick shithouse, family member pulled a knife & threatened to use it on himself & others....they attended, diffused the situation, returned him to his supported accommodation did not arrest him (& comforted/supported the other family member who was the focus of his rage/delusion).

Also there were 4 of them

Different force obviously but still....

The other worrying thing is, the officers knew they were being filmed and still behaved like that.

I think there’s a mentality among people that is heightened in police where they know they’re in trouble, visuals-wise but cannot bring themselves to back down or admit they’re wrong for appearing weak. Quite a few of Billboard Chris’s videos capture this well. There was the Dublin police officer who was increasingly looking more and more like an utter arse but just couldn’t stop. At its worst, you see murder: the cases in America of people who know they’re going to be caught on film killing someone but still carry on…it’s ego, pure and simple. Can’t admit they’re wrong, never back down, see it through to the end.

BezMills · 11/08/2023 10:50

Once you say how it is, you have to stick to that. If people think there is a negotiation, they're harder to deal with.

One BPS made her weaksauce stupid decision to arrest the drunk child, who was cowering in her own home terrified and apologetic, everything was already going to happen like it happened.

Makes you wonder what exactly they would do if they weren’t being filmed.

I get the feeling that if this was America, guns would be have been drawn.

WYP truly hate women. Sutcliffe, Savile both left to get on with their favourite hobbies of abusing, raping and killing women and girls, some of the worst grooming scandals in the UK, the brothels and legal prostitution zones where the police visited as punters and set up businesses. They hate women so much they even travelled to Norfolk, on the instructions of a male from South Yorks, to harass a man who dared to say men cannot become women - 2 nights in a hotel on full expenses. What a lovely day out.

When I spoke on Feminist chat about a WYP officer raping a child - a matter of public record - they contacted MN who handed over all my details, and then turned up at my place of work to harass me. It didn't work out the way they wanted as I own the business and understand my rights.
Fuck the West Yorkshire Police. Fuck them to hell for their crimes against women and girls.

It is quite absurd and no surprise that more and more people are now distrustful of our police forces. The joke now is how do you get the police to attend if you have been burgled? Shout Lesbian and you'll get 6 of them on your door. Otherwise forget it as they don't want to know.

DiabolicalFinial · 11/08/2023 11:42

MN handed over your details - fucking hell!

I’m so sorry you had to go through that, and the abuse of power of that police force.

BorgQueen · 11/08/2023 11:43

The WYP are acting like a private militia, there seems to be no comeback for them.

Boomboom22 · 11/08/2023 11:45

I hope you have complained, they were trying to get you sacked and cancelled for saying facts. Mn are in a difficult position but I hope the info wasn't just handed over but followed due process. Some staff / moderators certainly don't seem to understand the gc position or nuance when you see deletions / get deleted especially for more factual comments.

Boomboom22 · 11/08/2023 11:46

Perhaps you'd like to contact the BBC in follow up to this story related to abuse of power and this type of debate? If you felt you wanted to go public and it wouldn't damage your business?

This tells me the rot in WYP is all the way to the top. It's root and branch.

Wow, just wow.

So our comments can be policed and our anonymity counts for nothing on here even when discussing mere facts. Thanks for the heads up.
