I never watch Strictly, but it seems that her being on it is causing some conflict.

I did a quick look but couldn’t see a thread.

I'm delighted she's going to be on it.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 06/08/2023 23:48

Because she pointed out on twitter that ‘family’ drag shows weren’t ok?
Yeah, I’m with her.
I love strictly, and I’m sure there will be a mix of contestants who’ve said things that others don’t like. Unfortunately it seems some opinions are aired more aggressively than others. Who knew?!

Menopausehaver · 06/08/2023 23:49

I’m glad she’s on it and she hasn’t been cancelled, but I actually hope that it will be about her dancing.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 06/08/2023 23:55

I didn’t know that those were her views. I’m sorry people are trying to cancel her. I’ll make sure I tune in instead.

Gothambutnotahamster · 07/08/2023 00:03

I loved her beforehand - she was ace in Mr Selfridge - & I love her even more now. She'll be the reason I tune in.

That's unlikely, knowing Strictly.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 07/08/2023 00:06

Ooh I didn’t realise she’d upset ‘them’.

Go girl. I mean stay.

TheJRTwontLetMeBe · 07/08/2023 00:07

Well she's right that drag shows aren't family entertainment. Drag is adult entertainment. There are drag artists who have voiced this opinion too, so it's hardly controversial.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 07/08/2023 00:15

Go girl. I mean stay.

🤣

IcakethereforeIam · 07/08/2023 00:21

I've never watched Strictly. Is there a public vote?

IwantToRetire · 07/08/2023 00:26

I did wonder about having a thread about her, but thought I dont want to draw any more attention to her, because suspect many dont know what she may or may not have said and just know her from her acting.

But seems other papers are also reporting this as an issue, though not as shit stirring as the Manchester paper. https://metro.co.uk/2023/08/05/amanda-abbington-twitter-strictly-come-dancing-19283827/

But she does seem to have been very brave (taking on the twitterati) over more than a few years, and sincerely hope as someone who doesn't watch strictly that she does really well.

Lets just hope none of the other contestants throw a hissy fit and get her elbowed out.

In fact as said up thread, her comments about drag etc., are so sensible suspect many Strictly fans will think she's right and stand up for her.

Strictly star Amanda Abbington's Twitter has disappeared again

She's previously been banned from the app three times.

Strictly Come Dancing's Amanda Abbington has issued a frank seven-minute apology after fans vowed to boycott the new 2023 series following the BBC's announcement that she would be taking part.

The star of Sherlock, who had two kids with fellow Sherlock star Martin Freeman, has been forced to respond after fans of the long running BBC dance competition said they would 'refuse to watch' the new series when her name was announced on Friday.

I loved her in Mr Selfridge! Good for her! I wholeheartedly agree with her too.

I've never watched Strictly. Is there a public vote?

Yes, you get three votes per week. You can use all three for the same couple.

BetsyBobbins · 07/08/2023 01:00

If only people had the same amount of ire for Ann Widdicombe who had said women in prisons should give birth shackled to their beds when she was being dragged around like a bin bag by Housewives Favourite.

This is trending on twitter. Note specifically her March comment was about a 12 year old doing a sexualised drag performance.

She has made a video on Instagram you can see it on this Express article comes across well:
“I need to make this very clear, I love drag and I think it’s an amazing form of entertainment and drag queens are entertaining and brilliant...my son played Jamie in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and he was a wonderful drag queen.”
https://www.express.co.uk/celebrity-news/1799365/amanda-abbington-strictly-come-dancing-boycott-twitter

Amanda Abbington is pretty clearly sceptical about gender stuff from other stuff she has said.

The attempt to cancel her will hopefully as fail badly as the go against Robert Webb did a few years back as he got pretty far.

Amanda Abbington has broken her silence after some Strictly Come Dancing fans threatened to boycott the BBC show due to one of the actress's controversial tweets.

Fucks sake. Another person forced to capitulate although she does it with class and minimum grovelling.

AutumnCrow · 07/08/2023 01:23

Ffs, let the twatty 'fans' boycott it then. It's the BBC, a public broadcaster, for which poor sods like me pay a licence fee. It's not pay per view.

I want to watch Amanda Abbington dance.

No, he left in week 3/4 due to health reasons. This was the official reason given, whether that was truth I've no idea as the TRA brigade was gaining real traction at the time. He might have decided to leave and have his health as an excuse, who knows?

AutumnCrow · 07/08/2023 01:31

Well, I think the BBC knows that its EDI practices are now under scrutiny like never before - so if it caves in it will have to justify why to the parliamentary Select Committee on its case, which should be interesting.

And Elon Musk might fund AA's legal case over loss of earnings against the BBC. Fun thought.

SabrinaThwaite · 07/08/2023 01:32

She’s an amazing woman and an ambassador for the Spinal Injuries Association.

She’s being hounded because she’s been vocal in her support of women, the biological kind and not the lady feelz ones.

I saw Amanda and Frances Barber in The Unfriend (both brilliant) and have no doubt that they are kindred spirits.

And as for all the TRAs saying that they will boycott Strictly because of Amanda taking part - I’m sure their hatred of women speaking their mind when it comes to biological sex will outweigh their support for Layton Williams and they really really won’t watch it at all.

LizzieSiddal · 07/08/2023 01:35

I will be voting for her every week.

AutumnCrow · 07/08/2023 01:57

Absolutely. I’ll tune in for her, and watch her, and vote for her (even when they give her all the crappy dances).

He’s got a heart condition, which was discussed at the start of the series. So it’s likely it was for health reasons.

Backstreets · 07/08/2023 07:14

She’s been openly GC for years. I’m not watching a seven minute apology but disappointing if she walks it all back for Strictly, though I appreciate her income probably varies wildly.
