That's it, really. One woman wrote to complain and the staff said their only concern was that he might become dehydrated.

More normalisation of fetishes.

The Telegraph commentators are duly outraged. All get the issues to an impressive extent. The multi-stranded aspects are finally getting through after such a long period of 'no debate'.

FrancescaContini · 23/07/2023 10:38

Really nasty and potentially very frightening for children (and adults) to have to see. No more Globe for us as a family.

But oh well, as long as the fetishist is happy…

Theeyeballsinthesky · 23/07/2023 10:43

Fucksake they’re pathetic! I could understand if they were asking a 20 year old student on a holiday job to boot him out but they have security to do it.

Another case of 'Go woke, go broke'.

FrancescaContini · 23/07/2023 10:46

Yes, all those 15 and 16 year old studying Shakespeare for GCSE really need to see a man in a bloody gimp suit 😡

WimpoleHat · 23/07/2023 10:50

I’m starting to wonder if we should all become more confident about calling these things out there and then. If she’d asked - loudly - “Why is that man wearing a gimp suit? Is he a sexual fetishist? If so, I’d like a refund because I don’t think it’s appropriate to take my children inside to participate in a grown man’s sexual kink…..” (etc) - would they have found it so easy to dismiss and write off? I wonder. It’s easy to dismiss after the event and in writing.

Boiledbeetle · 23/07/2023 10:57

The theatre is not the place for a gimp suit. It's just not. I'm not saying you should be forced to dress up to go to the theatre, those days are long gone, but FFS a Fucking gimp suit. No one should think this is acceptable.

Yes, it's heartening to see hundreds of comments condemning this, some of them from people who clearly have quite a handle on the issue.

The phenomenon is really frothy now. Post modernism by definition abhors boundaries and definitions.

That's fine when it's in some boring as shit book by Judith Butler or Gender Studies degree, but when it invades the real world...?

And of course management said their only concern is the physical health of the poor dehydrated gimp. This stuff is all written down in a pamphlet somewhere.

Imagine the groupthink in the theatre back office...the women, and men, shamed into silence to not speak out; those women, and men, who are so in fear of their livelihoods and social connections, that they express only one thought, for our new gimpy friend.

And then those happy to wave this thru, seeing Queer Theory jump from their dusty theoretical Intersectional Analysis 101 pages to the real world, to crowbar it's way into real people, incl women, mums, kids. And seeing this as one in the eye against the cisheteronormative patriarchy.

HermioneWeasley · 23/07/2023 11:00

It should be illegal to force unconsenting members of the public to participate in your fetish. Disgusting and shame on the Globe

lifeturnsonadime · 23/07/2023 11:01

Men with fetishes have been emboldened.

Their right to wear what they want when they want is seen as paramount.

viques · 23/07/2023 11:04

Shame the theatre staff weren’t as quick to deal with someone getting their rocks off in public ( which let’s face it is what this is) as they are when an innocent groundling who doesn’t know the standing rules sits themselves down for a second or two. The staff pounce like terriers on a rat when that happens.

Pluvia · 23/07/2023 11:06

Surely it's quite easy to create a modern policy for appropriate dress in places like theatres and shops? I'd suggest no swimwear, no visible fetish wear, men required to wear tops.

Point to the rules, say 'Sorry, mate, look — no fetish gear, it says here in the rules.' Done.

You’d think wouldn’t you - bog standard pubs in seaside towns manage it all the time

Kendodd · 23/07/2023 11:12

Actually I really struggle to see what could be done about this. We all know the context behind this, but, as the theatre said, there were no offensive slogans and all private body parts are covered up. I really don't like the idea of policing clothes. Maybe just pointing and laughing would have been the best strategy.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 23/07/2023 11:14

They could instill a dress code. I'm surprised there isn't one already.
Lots of golf clubs have them. And theatres too.
I went to a place in Monaco that stated what type of shoe could be worn, men must have a jacket on whilst walking through the restaurant etc.

Its easy to do. People who want to go, complied

Pluvia · 23/07/2023 11:16

Clothing has always been policed, as a previous poster has pointed out. You can do what you like/ dress how you like at home, but when you're out in public you have to expect to be required to conform to basic social norms.

Yes! God help anyone who tries to sit down on the floor…..

RealityFan · 23/07/2023 11:18

I wouldn't be surprised if our little friend had relieved himself in the foyer, the message that would have gone out was management was sorry for lack of directions to the loos.

When you strip it all back, one of the most disappointing things about the last few years is how neutered institutions are. They've literally done a Sarah Jane Baker and cut their own balls off.

I don't suppose I ever had anything in common with the type running the Globe. I have even less now.

Let's have a new law. No more masking up at demos. Anyone with a mask, scarf, banaclava...umbrella...two umbrellas...gets pulled out of any demo.

You're proud enough to fight your cause, you're proud enough to show your face.

CashmereDarling · 23/07/2023 11:21

It does say they are reviewing their policy on clothing.

If he wasn't breaking any actual rules at the time (other than common decency of course) then maybe there wasn't much they could do.

But ugh, so much ugh. I hope they do tighten up their rules and not just quietly brush this under the carpet.

Monsteramum · 23/07/2023 11:22

And women get thrown off aeroplanes for wearing 'revealing' outfits that show a bit of cleavage, yet men can wander into a theatre in full fetish gear and the only concern is if he might be thirsty.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 23/07/2023 11:23

Why couldn't it just be "your clothing is potentially upsetting and offensive to others, we will need you to leave".

You can bet your arse if a woman turned up in a t shirt with "trans women are men" written on it she'd be out on her ear.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 23/07/2023 11:25

The thing is I can’t imagine anyone’s dress code has “fetish wear including latex suits & gimp masks are not permitted” because it would not have occurred to anyone you had to bloody well point that out.

thanks to stonewall et al and ‘queering’ of public spaces, it now clearly does have to be pointed out.
