Could you be 'de-banked' for being gender-critical?

I'm sure Nigel Farage has very few fans here. However, in the light of his bank, Coutts, closing his bank accounts due to his political beliefs, could this happen to gender-critical women too?

Farage has obtained documents from Coutts which make it clear that the bank gave him the boot because his views didn't align with their 'inclusive' purpose.

I wonder if GC women such as Posie Parker have had similar issues? Or if this is something that could happen? Believing in humans being a sexually dimorphic species is, as we all know, 'not inclusive'.

Ah, ok.

I lurked during the pandemic, I wasn't brave enough to make any comment 😆

I'd be disappointed if any PM just ignored the exposure of such practices in banking. In fact, it's quite shocking to me that Starmer has refused to comment, despite seeing the evidence he has. You'd think he'd be interested in people's rights being infringed but apparently he's ok with that. Following and not leading.

He has nothing to say about Johnson ignoring a court order, or the priveledges committee criticising the likes of (still not resigned) and Rees Mogg, but loses his shit over Garage having to move from Courts to Nat West.

beguilingeyes · 22/07/2023 07:47

Dorries Farage Courts. Poxy predictive text.

He was offered a personal bank account, not a business one. Which effectively stops you from being able to have any seperation and is required if you are a business owner.

Turns out he isn't the only one. Tens of thousands of people are being debanked. I think that is quite important for British Citizens don't you?

Do you have evidence of that? The famous letter recently said banking facilities.

Quite clearly you haven't understood the issue if you think this is about Nigel Farage. Instead of reacting in a kneejerk fashion over party politics, have a think where this could lead to when banks can decide who can and who can't have a bank account. Think how you'd manage if your bank decided to close your account and as a result no other bank would take your business. This is about the danger to everyone's civil rights.

The initial offer was for a basic current account only. The bank haven't said that they've changed that to include a business account.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 22/07/2023 11:50

Given the number of posters frantically trying to defend Coutts / Nat West I can only assume that they must be bank employees? Surely nobody else has such a poor grasp of democratic values?

It's just broad-brush tribalism. They see the name Farage, think "I'm against him", and find the tribal line. The line doesn't stretch to independent analysis. And who's not for us is against us.

Coutts of course is unimportant compared to a personality. Who's ever heard of those guys?! And besides, millionaires need an exclusive bank. And the big financial institutions and corporations are on 'our side' now.

The letter from the CEO said banking facilities. To me that implies something more than basic.

The bank offered a basic current account. Of course they might be offering different now but there's nothing in the letter to say they are. And no one has contacted Farage to say differently.
You're just reading what you want to be true so that it fits in with your anti Farage rhetoric.

I was out for a few - well many - beers last night with someone who has dealt with Rose

A diversity hire - which does competent women down (and I know a lor of them as well)

Should be fired

There's another group that has a notoriously poor grasp of democratic values and is often found posting on here. I assumed some of those posters are TRAs who actually approve of the idea of "TERFs" not being able to get bank accounts and aren't smart enough to understand that the kind of tyranny they're fighting for would eventually be turned against them too. Could be trying to centre the discussion on Farage as part of the usual distraction and deflection routine.

Igneococcus · 23/07/2023 07:46

I just asked under a Times comment about the Farage/NatWest issue if, in the light of this story, they are rethinking their real name only comments policy and my question was up for about one minute and then deleted.
Time to finally end that subscription.

Yes there is, very poor

ManAboutTown · 23/07/2023 09:29

This whole episode is an utter disgrace. Alison Rose should be fired. Trying to claim that the dossier on Farage didn't reflect the bank's view is risible

It was 36 pages long - prepared for and acted upon by NW's Reputational Risk Committee. It was definitely bank's view. The fact she can try and get away with pathetic lies is appalling.

What next utility companies cutting off gas , electricity or water because you voted for the BNP or SWP in the last election (trying not to give that bellend Dale Vince any ideas here)

How do you know he was only offered a basic current account? Because Farage says so?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/07/2023 10:48

This sudden defence of the banks because one of them has booted a lot of people's hate object is both highly entertaining and disturbing.

Have you actually changed to your real name? Comments are autodeleted if you haven't.

Would be interesting to know whether this rule has disproportionately affected female readers. It's logical to think it would have, given the demonisation of"GC" women.

If you do cancel, let them know this is a major problem.

I cancelled when they brought it in and told them why. They DGAF - though I agree that every woman who leaves over the policy should tell them.

I'm surprised at how little I miss my subscription. I can read Janice Turner and Hadley articles on archive. The Times is expensive, and the quality of most of it isn't great - boring columnists like Giles Coren and the same articles recycled for days.

Susie Boniface and Zoe Williams have both done this on the Sky News paper review in the last few days. No recognition at all of the real issues.

Yes, I heard Boniface comparing it to being refused service in the chippy. Memorably idiotic, even by her standards

mrshoho · 23/07/2023 15:05

I'm glad to see the government has stepped in to put our banks in their place. What a fucking diabolical shambles. Farage appears to be the tip of the iceberg when reading about the fb group with thousands of unhappy customers from various banks.

Equating banks exiting people's accounts on the basis of their personal political and moral views, to that of being refused service in a local Chippy?

Not for the first time I've questioned how these people on television and radio get hired, when it appears their IQ is well below that of the population mean.
