I’m gutted, I’m such a huge fan of his. I’ve been hugely looking forward to the second series of Good Omens.

And now this. When challenged on it, apparently he said “I’m OK, TERFs can’t climbs stairs”.

How very disappointing.

Its been bothering me for years who DT reminded me of and finally, yes, its Bill Nighy!

Also the nepotism annoys me with the Tennant family

'Dr Woo' 😁

Thank you, I've been calling it Dr Exposition (all the explanation the Doctors had been doing to carry the plot so i stopped watching) but this is much snappier.

I'd took against Tennant because, perhaps unfairly, he seemed so up himself. Was dismayed when he came back, I'd been hoping a new Doctor might make it watchable. A friend of minecreally fancied him, which i never got. He always reminded me of my mum when she took her bottom set out.

The DW people are increasingly desperate. Bringing back an old popular actor is a sign things are probably unfixable.

What I can't figure out is how they don't see that the problem is the writing.

😂

beguilingeyes · 05/08/2023 18:41

The writing has been pretty bad since Capaldi. Hopefully bringing RTD will fix that. I miss Matt Smith.

Completely agree on the Nighy thing - he always had a touch of Nighy but in the last two episodes he seemed to be doing a full on impression and it was just weird

Totally. And I detest bill nighy. Used to like DT in Dr Who, he was great in Broadchurch but increasingly he’s a gurning caricature and he puts me off watching stuff.

Georgia Tennant gives me 'the mom in mean girl' vibes. She's just irritating.

Series 3 of Staged is All About Her. (I think she co-wrote it.) It starts off funny and then descends into self absorbed trying to be clever tedium.

storminamooncup · 05/08/2023 20:35

Those f*cking dungarees...I'm just an 'ordinary' mum....churning out kids....my name isn't Georgia, its 'babe'....ruining what was a good show by making it ALL ABOUT ME...

She is a good actress, but what has she really done since Dr's Daughter?

Are they trying to be TV's version of brand beckham?

It did make me wonder whether the reveal episode was her pitching for a reality show. I was so hacked off about the reveal I stopped watching.

Bill Nighy is brilliant but I don’t see him in Tennant, Nighy has far more of the “shambling upper class type” about him. Both are excellent actors (much as I’m still salty about that bloody t shirt of Tennant’s) and but they’re not that similar to my mind.

Series 3 of Staged is All About Her.

Wasn't it just?

Nighy was pretty irritating in Love Actually but I like him in other things - he was great in the recent film Living. I’m generally a big fan of DT, but I did feel he was overdoing it a bit in GO2 - Sheen’s performance is much more subtle

raised five children? I dunno much about Georgia Tennant but it's hard to see how she could have done right. she can't help being Peter Davidson's daughter, and good for her for finding a man who seems (t-shirts aside) to be a decent if slightly shallow thinking person and apparently being happy together.

I always quite enjoyed that fact that DT would be in LITERALLY ANYTHING (very much enjoyed his work in Tree Fu Tom), and assumed it was about keeping a household of 7 fed and clothed.

RealityFan · 06/08/2023 11:14

I'm as GC as the next person, but I can't see any point in losing it because artists are predominantly non GC. They're not the choices we'd make, but we don't know what goes on in their lives, and their family.

We should know by now the whole of showbiz, and the artistic fraternity, is pretty much tied to this ideology. It's what it is.

And we know what the cost is for people like DT if they were to break ranks and declare GC...I'm sure many look at Glinner and think, um, not for me.

I'm realising more and more, the trans child is a kind of analogue of the virgin birth, a kind of chimeric concept, an emblem of sorts.

The belief runs like a stripe thru the trans supporting community, especially the young crowd who worship DT. The good Dr. Who fandom is captured, other than old codgers like me who watched it first in the 60s.

JKR is of an age and wealth strata that she was able to rebel, and draw a line, and be that immoveable rock. Would she have done so in the middle of writing Harry Potter? Maybe not.

Even mega rich intellectual artists like Sting can't match her fortitude (so much for the well read Jungian who turned down an interview with GC Hadley Freeman, what a coward).

DT, even if he was GC or at least agnostic, would not declare this. That he isn't, and is likely very TRA along with his wife, well, it's just not news anymore.

Surely people's fun being spoilt by this fact is akin to all the TRA youth snowflakes throwing their Harry Potter books in the trash.

I don’t think it is. If it was, every celeb would do the pronoun thing on their social media but they don’t. Most showbiz and artistic people are just trying to keep the peace so they get another job.

I think the reason there’s a lot of this ideology about because of funding streams. The Arts Council dictate what gets put on.

Dare say you may be very right.

Once this ideology burns itself out, the ideologues will memory hole things, and those who just went along with the flow who had to, will just also pretend it never happened.

I finished GO2 last night and thought it was pretty rubbish.

Spoiler free as I can be stuff ahead:

It was always going to be hard to follow the first series, which was based on a great book which was 2/3 written by Terry Pratchett, who is a far superior writer to Gaiman. Gaiman has great ideas, but his actual writing I have never rated and his dialogue grates.

Given the astronomical stakes of the first series, the stakes in S2 were very low and is much more about the relationships between Crowley and Aziraphale. Because of that it feels like it was written by a bunch of shippers from Tumblr. There are entire tedious B plots about a pair of other characters who you could completely remove and it would not impact the story. There are no charming and interesting side characters like Madam Tracy or Shadwell.
Much of the plot is told in flashbacks to previous encounters between Aziraphale and Crowley. Major pacing issues.

It also looks and feels a lot cheaper than the first series.

David Tennant is way, way over the top and chews the scenery. Michael Sheen is a lot better and able to rein it in and Aziraphale remains a very sweet character.

It overall feels like it was made as fan service to a particularly annoying group of shippers on Tumblr who really shouldn’t be indulged at all.

They hook they’ve left for a series 3 actually sounds interesting but it begs the question- why not just go straight to that instead of fucking around for 6 hours?

HorribleNecktie · 07/08/2023 07:17

Edit: And yes Crowley kisses Aziraphale and it wasn’t romantic or passionate just a bit weird and uncomfortable feeling.

Personally I thought it was heartbreaking, but it sounds like I was a lot more invested in what was happening than you were by that point!

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 07/08/2023 10:48

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 07/08/2023 10:48

Nah, it was weird!

I saw it as a last, desperate attempt to get Aziraphale to understand what he means to Crowley - although kissing is a fairly alien concept to both of them, we know that they understand the significance of it in the human world

Put yourself in his position. His kid has been sucked into this. And he is probably trying to show his support.

He will know that you can't change sex. I imagine this is his very poor, privileged way of showing his kid he's not a 'bigot'.

It's disappointing but entirely unsurprising.

I say this as the mother of a son who is in the throes of it, dating a transman. It's fucking hard work and kids know how to manipulate their parents with this stuff now. I imagine he's doing what he thinks will salvage his relationship with his child.

It's very sad.

Mirabai · 12/02/2024 07:37

DT is nothing like BN.

SemperIdem · 29/06/2024 00:38

DT is profoundly disappointing.

I really expected a different stance from such an educated man.

fedupandstuck · 29/06/2024 08:33

Don't know if I'd call him particularly well educated. He's got a BA in Dramatic Studies and that's it.

But he identifies as having PhDs in physics, biology, Archeology, and kindness! So he's much clevererer than us.
