A post promoting Lucy Spraggan's book appeared in my Facebook feed and I found it really interesting that she chose to post the following:

There’s a chapter in my book called ‘When I Was a Little Boy’ which talks about, well, when I was a little boy.
I was born biologically female but from a young age I chose to be called Max and lived - completely authentically - as a boy.
I talk about in all the ways that my family nurtured my identity and in all the ways that freedom to be myself, freedom to be Max, helped me to grow.
It was only recently that I discovered how much Max is still a part of me and I talk about that too.
Anyway, I wanted you to meet Max. So here’s some pics of me then

I wonder whether she will go all out and say she is glad, as a happy adult lesbian, that her family let her just work it all out for herself.

One of the comments:

'I love this. However, in todays society, Lucy’s parents would have been encouraged to give her hormones and other drugs to change her body from female to male which DOES have irreparable side effects. I agree with allowing children to be who they feel comfortable being, I don’t agree with giving them drugs and medication to make a life changing decision that they just aren’t equipped to make at such a young age. I too was “all boy” when I was younger but thank god I wasn’t given the opportunity to change my gender, I love being a woman and back then I had no concept of what being a man OR woman meant in the world. I just wanted to play football, and only boys were allowed to do that. Hence why I cut my hair short and tried to pass myself off as a boy for years as a kid. I had no concept though of what I was doing. Nature took its course and thank god it did, I love being a woman and I love all my womanly parts. Children need to be supported in whatever they want to do, but making life changing decisions is something they should decide as an adult.'

@OldCrone how many young people do you think will rush out to he medically transitioned because a singer who they dont know gave some money to a charity? Seriously?

This is akin to the death threats and abuse given to the callers at mermaids.

Your anger and entitlement is going to the wrong people.

If Mermaids didn't exist, fewer children would be medically transitioned. Giving them money helps them to exist.

Death threats and abuse? What?

Anger and entitlement? What are you on about? You're not making much sense at the moment.

MavisMcMinty · 21/07/2023 17:28

Mermaids is currently being investigated by the Charity Commission, so I look forward to reading the outcome of that. What with the Cass Review and Hannah Barnes’ book Time to Think, the medical/social “transitioning” of children is under a lot of scrutiny at the moment.

You're unaware that mermaids staff receive death threats and abuse?

I meant your anger at medical transition and entitlement of what you think other people should do is being aimed at Lucy. She isnt transitioning children.

Oooo it's another redefined word!

"Entitlement"

Old meaning - a belief one is entitled to certain material or social advantages (a) not because of what one has done to deserve them but simply because of who one is, or (b) through a misguided belief that one has done more to deserve them then others, when the reality is that one is simply unaware of why others have at least the same claim

New meaning - the outrageous belief one can ever have an opinion about whether something someone wants to do is a good or bad idea

These death threats and abuse are nothing to do with me or the other women posting here. What do you think is 'akin to the death threats and abuse'? Disagreeing with you is neither a death threat nor abuse.

I'm not directing any anger at Lucy. I think she is misguided in giving money to a controversial charity. That's all.

'Entitlement of what you think other people should do' is an interesting phrase. I have an opinion. That's all. That's not 'entitlement'.

Sorry, I genuinely see how I didnt write that well. I am not for one second saying anyone on here does that. What I meant want was -
Criticising Lucy is the same as being horrendous to mermaids staff.
Neither ot them achieve anything and its misplaced. .
Not si much you, OC but I do think other posts earlier today ahout being disappointed in Lucy bla bla is entitled behaviour. She doesnt owe anyone anything.

Entitled to me is expecting something that isnt yours.
