Slow hand clap for the male winner of Miss Universe Netherlands 2023. Don't know why women would enter these things anyway but more so than ever a reason to just hand the whole thing to the men from now on.

beauty contests are 100% about gender

men can have them

zanahoria · 09/07/2023 17:52

Beauty contests have not been really big news for decades.

It is is just a stunt for publicity.

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 09/07/2023 17:55

To be fair, the way women present themselves in beauty contests is about as close as a natal woman can get to "womanface". I find the whole thing grotesque. I bet the other contestants were "so happy for them being their true self". Boak.

toomanytrees · 09/07/2023 19:03

Some women like beauty contests. My guess is that the female participants were told/forced to grin and bear it, just like Riley Gaines was. They have every right to a male free competition. I believe Yaniv tried to enter a beauty competition.

Mochudubh · 09/07/2023 19:04

I just asked DH what he thought of the Netherland Miss Universe winner. It took him about .10 of a second to say "Is that a bloke"?

I agree

i have no interest in beauty contests but i am not keen on the ‘men can have it’ attitude

i don’t like football….I don’t think its ok for men to take it 🤷🏻

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 09/07/2023 19:15

Can they not just have their own category? It's appropriation, again. One woman came second - lost the prize fund and bid for world peace 😉 because a bloke wanted to play dress up. I'm not one for pageants and find the whole industry grotesque to be fair, but appropriation is appropriation.

heldinadream · 09/07/2023 19:19

Well I would imagine the kind of people who do like beauty pageants or whatever the hell these things are will be bewildered at this, so it's sunlight isn't it?

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 09/07/2023 19:20

really, this is something where I'm fine with it being mixed sex

'how feminine can you be' is a competition both men and women should be able to enter

as long as we're all clear that guy's a bloke

except of course the judges are unlikely to be clear on that point because the competition is, at it's heart 'do I think you're the most desirable contestant' and there's likely to be a bit of internalised homophobia going on

mrshoho · 09/07/2023 19:23

This entire industry looks to have been captured when you see who now owns the Miss Universe organisation..

The universe is a pretty big place, no guessing who you might bump into.

But on the other side it can also be an opportunity for women, particularly from developing nations to support women. The previous winner from India became a powerful advocate for improving women's rights and health provision. I can hazard a guess at what a transwomen, if they won, would campaign for.

He's not really a miss though is he

puffyisgood · 09/07/2023 19:43

Beauty pageants are a load of rubbish and the judging is completely subjective anyway, if the judges think that this man makes a better beauty queen than his female rivals then that’s their call.

Same here. A lot of people on this thread are saying exactly this, that "men can have it". It's like they're blind to every small encroachment into women's stuff

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 09/07/2023 20:53

I guess my point is I'm not good with beauty pageants being 'women's stuff'

a competition to see how pretty and agreeable people are? no thanks

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 09/07/2023 21:02

It doesn't matter that I think beauty pageants are claptrap. They are for women, lots of women do care about them, and they provide a lot of women with opportunities and rewards. If they are for women, men should not be entering them - even men transformed by the surgeon's blade to mimic the currently in fashion version of 'desirable female'.

Maybe there should be a "no plastic surgery" rule and a "no make up" round. That'd weed em out.

This. I’ve always hated them. Maybe if lots of ‘girls with penises’ start winning, the misogynistic straight male a-holes might lose interest and these ridiculous events will cease to be.

Dissidente · 09/07/2023 21:25

It matters if the ideal of female beauty has a tall male skeleton with narrow hips and straight legs. A feminist beauty contest might value small women with plump faces, narrow shoulders and slender hands, broad hips with angled legs and rounded calves.
It's a confusing world that tells teenage girls they are boys if they look too masculine, but also that female characteristics are undesirable.

mrshoho · 09/07/2023 21:33

Something else that I find hypocritical is how when it suits, the trans wagon can and do stipulate biological sex. Take this trans beauty pageant.

How would it go down if biological females wedged themselves into this competition?

Good point. Look at the wreckage from ten years of convincing girls they need giant arses and duck bill lips to be desirable. Preferably on a frame built for neither of those things.

Christ on a bike! Those photos paint a thousand words. It's like a little Britain sketch on acid!

The photos of Brian with the other contestants do tell the story so succinctly. I think the description of Brian as 'a large biological male' by the UK beauty contestant in the article was the chefs kiss for me though.

If it was satire, you'd think it a bit far fetched but no, this is reality Confused
